Delhi rain: 14 flights diverted at airport, city faces traffic snarls and waterlogging
Flights were hit, several areas were waterlogged and traffic jams ensued — even as Delhi continued to experience relief from heatwave conditions on Tuesday, flyers, commuters, and residents were inconvenienced due to the weather conditions.
At the Indira Gandhi International Airport, at least 14 flights were diverted on Tuesday between 1 pm and 5 pm, said sources.
The airport, on its official X handle, had warned of a possible impact on flight operations due to the 'inclement weather'. Airlines had also put out statements, advising flyers to reach the airport early. 'Rainy conditions in Delhi have led to blocked roads and slower movement across parts of the city. We know this can be inconvenient, especially when you are heading to the airport. We recommend planning extra time for your commute and checking your flight status through our website or mobile app,' Indigo wrote on X.
Several areas of the Capital faced waterlogging. Of the 14 complaints received by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on waterlogging and falling of trees, Karol Bagh zone topped the list with four complaints — one each from areas of Sudarshan Park, Kirti Nagar, and two from Karam Pura.
The Public Works Department (PWD) received over 20 complaints concerning waterlogging on many key stretches.
The downpour led to knee-deep waterlogging in several areas, like the underpass near
Delhi Cantonment, Zakhira Underpass, Pul Prahladpur, ITO, Delhi-Najafgarh Road and Delhi- Rohtak Road, affecting vehicular movement. PWD officials said pumps were deployed to clear out the water, underlining that the operations were time-consuming at Zakhira Underpass and Mahipalpur flyover.
Visuals that surfaced on social media captured the situation in the Mahipalpur area, where around four DTC buses were stranded.
As powerful winds swept through the city before the rains began, several trees were also uprooted. The MCD received complaints about trees falling in Vasant Kunj and Naraina Village.
Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leveraged the opportunity to hit out at the BJP-led Delhi government, accusing it of monsoon mismanagement. In a post on X, AAP wrote, 'Every engine of the 4-engine BJP government in Delhi gets jammed in a light rain. There is no arrangement for drainage in the BJP government; the roads are submerged in water. Delhi is stuck in traffic jams, but the propaganda vehicle of the BJP's lies is running at full speed.'
Leader of Opposition Atishi slammed Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta for not taking action to prevent flooding. Reposting the traffic police's monsoon alert on X, Atishi questioned, 'Where is Delhi's Chief Minister who said that roads will not be flooded during rains?'
Among the neighbouring cities, Gurgaon also witnessed waterlogging in several parts. Residents cited incomplete desilting work and maintenance of stormwater drains as reasons for waterlogging.
Sectors 4, 21, 40, 41, and 45 were among the affected areas.

PWD completes only 60% desilting work
New Delhi: The Public Works Department (PWD) has completed only 60 per cent of the desilting work of drains un-der its jurisdiction, with the June 15 deadline now over, an official report said. Earlier this month, PWD Minister Parvesh Verma had set June 15 as the deadline to complete the de-silting of all PWD-managed drains ahead of the monsoon. The department has completed desilting for 1,294 km as of Tuesday, out of the total 2,140 km drain length under it, the latest status report said. Among the 17 PWD divisions, only the South West Region-2 (SWR-2) has completed 100 per cent de-silting, while the West Road-2 division has shown the poorest performance with only 31 per cent work completed. The deadline for completion of desilting work has now been extended to June 30, an official said. During an inspection of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department's control room on June 10, Verma had said the Delhi government had completed 90 per cent of desilting work for 76 drains under the (I&FC) and around 50 per cent of work on PWD drains

CM Yogi's Kashi visit focuses on improvement of traffic
1 2 3 4 Varanasi: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath 's two-day visit to Varanasi focused on ensuring further improvement in traffic situation as was evident from his asking for timely completion of road and bridge projects along with inspection of infrastructure development projects on Monday night. Yogi's site inspections on Monday late evening started with the Mohansarai-Cantt widening and strengthening project, which costs Rs 412.53 crore. When officials informed Yogi that 89% of the projects, including a 6-lane service road between Mohansarai and Deendayal Upadhyay Nagar Chakia and a 4-lane road from Mohansarai to Cantt, was complete, he instructed PWD engineers to expedite the work and complete it by Aug. Completion of the two projects will ease traffic on the routes, especially those used by vehicles to reach BHU and other parts of the city. Officials said due to massive traffic density, Mohansarai-Cantt road used to be choked, especially at night when heavy vehicles started entering the city via highways. It caused inconvenience to those traveling to BHU Hospital, railway and bus stations. During Shrawan month, one lane of the Mohansarai-Cantt road is reserved for Kanwariyas by ensuring movement of traffic in both lanes in the only available lane. As the widened road under this project is coming up with service lanes on both sides, closing the main road's lane for commuters will not be needed, hence traffic flow will remain smooth. Problems like waterlogging in rainy season, which also disrupts traffic and increases the risk of accidents, will also end. As utility ducts have been ensured in the project, the problem of frequent road cutting by various departments for utilities will also end. The project also includes intersection expansion, junction improvement, street lighting and road safety measures. Officials expect that not only will regular traffic and movement of pilgrims be eased, tourists visiting other destinations, including Sarnath, will also benefit. Yogi also inspected a 650-meter railway overbridge being constructed at a cost of Rs 42.2 crore on the Mohansarai-Adalpura route, between Hardattpur and Rajatalab on the Varanasi-Prayagraj rail section. He instructed that remaining work, which is almost complete, should be finished by Aug. Regarding this RoB, officials said railway crossing on this route is often closed due to very heavy rail traffic. It causes inconvenience and delays for people traveling between Mohansarai and Adalpura. Completion of this overbridge will reduce travel time and costs for residents traveling to Varanasi city, Rajatalab sub-registrar office, Gangapur and LBS International Airport. Approximately 6,000 vehicles use this route daily and completion of this project will benefit around 150,000 people from 26 villages.
