APSRTC includes Tirumala hill route in Stree Shakti free bus travel scheme for women
The earlier exclusion had drawn criticism, as a one-way ticket to Tirumala costs Rs 90, with a round-trip costing Rs 160. The new announcement is expected to benefit thousands of female pilgrims.
APSRTC Chairman Konakalla Narayana Rao made the announcement on Tuesday during an inspection of bus stands in Avanigadda and Challapalli. He was accompanied by MLA Mandali Buddha Prasad. He also inspected the Machilipatnam bus stand with Excise Minister Kollu Ravindra.
The chairman noted the scheme's overwhelming success, stating that about 43 lakh women have already used the free travel service. He added that the scheme benefits women going to hospitals, temples, and those working odd jobs, saving them an estimated Rs. 6.30 crore per day.
For pilgrims travelling to Tirumala, the APSRTC runs frequent 'Saptagiri Express' services from various stations in Tirupati, including the Railway Station, RTC Bus Station, Sri Padmavathi Bus Station, and Balaji Link Bus Station. Services run from 3:30 am to 11:30 pm, with a bus available every ten minutes.

Railways To Roll Out Airport-Like Luggage Screening At Major Stations
The Indian Railways will soon bring in airport-style baggage checks for train passengers. Bags will now be scanned at entry and exit gates, with strict weight limits and penalties for excess or oversized luggage. Electronic machines and scanners will be installed at stations. Bags will be tagged after scanning, and passengers will only be allowed onto platforms once their baggage is cleared. Carrying more than the prescribed limit will mean paying extra charges or booking the luggage as a parcel. Oversized baggage that causes inconvenience inside coaches may also invite a fine, even if it is under the weight limit. How Much Luggage Is Free? The free allowance depends on the class of travel: First AC Class - 70 kg Second AC Class - 50 kg Third AC And Sleeper Class - 40 kg General Class - 30 kg Every passenger will also get an additional allowance of 10 kg. Beyond this, luggage must be booked as a parcel, or fines will apply. First Phase The rules will first be enforced at major stations under North Central Railway and Northern Railway. These include Prayagraj Junction, Chheoki, Subedarganj, Kanpur Central, Mirzapur, Tundla, Aligarh Junction, Govindpuri, Lucknow Charbagh, Banaras and Etawah. Officials clarified that the rule was to reduce overcrowding in coaches and improve security. Airport-Style Experience At Stations The railway is also modernising major stations to match airport-style experiences. It will open premium retail outlets offering clothing, footwear, electronics and travel accessories. At Prayagraj Junction, the Railways is investing Rs 960 crore under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The nine-storey terminal will feature spacious lounges, high-speed Wi-Fi, solar power systems, rainwater harvesting, digital displays and automated ticket machines. From December 2026, entry into the terminal will be allowed only with a valid train ticket, which will act as a "boarding pass". Visitors will need a platform ticket that will function as a "visitor pass". The redevelopment will prepare Prayagraj for the massive crowds expected during the Kumbh and Maha Kumbh festivals. Railways will use a 7 Core Service (CS) model at the station to manage passenger flow efficiently.

Chennai: NHAI Clears Six-Lane Flyover From Poonamallee To Maduravoyal, Full Details Inside
Last Updated: One lane will be used for piling and pier works, while 10 lanes, including service lanes, will remain open. Vehicles entering Chennai from Bengaluru, Krishnagiri, and Vellore will soon get much-needed relief. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has cleared the construction of a six-lane elevated corridor from Poonamallee to Maduravoyal, stretching 8.1km at a cost of Rs 1,250 crore. As per TOI, the project, tendered earlier this week, will feature entry and exit points only at its ends and will be toll-charged. According to NHAI officials, work is expected to begin within three months, with a completion timeline of two-and-a-half years. How Will It Change Travel? Currently, the Poonamallee–Maduravoyal stretch sees around 90,000 vehicles every day, causing long delays at busy junctions. Once complete, the new flyover is expected to transform travel time into the city. In the future, this corridor will connect with another planned 13km stretch from Outer Ring Road (ORR) to Sriperumbudur. Together, the two routes will enable commuters to cover 22km in less than 20 minutes, compared to the current one-hour slog. Project director I S Janakumaran assured that traffic movement will not be heavily affected. Construction will take place by closing one lane at a time, while leaving 10 lanes, including service lanes, open for vehicles. The Chennai Port is also expected to benefit, as the corridor will support faster cargo movement, making full use of its 135 MTPA handling capacity. Local residents have welcomed the project but voiced concerns about delays and service lanes. Many feel that the three-year construction timeline is too long and want NHAI to speed up the work while also improving service roads. Some also demanded early connectivity with the 262km Chennai–Bengaluru Expressway, so that commuters benefit immediately once the larger highway opens. This is not an isolated project. NHAI has already completed an 84km stretch of National Expressway-7 in Bengaluru, with further works underway in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
