For the countless commuters relying on the Dubai Metro every day, staying informed about station name changes has become just as important as knowing the route itself. These updates, driven largely by commercial naming rights agreements, can catch even regular riders off guard, making it crucial to stay current to navigate the network smoothly.
Why Are Station Names Changing?
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) launched a unique Naming Rights project in 2008. This initiative allows public and private sector companies to sponsor or rename metro stations under long-term commercial agreements. It's a one-of-a-kind concept aimed at involving major brands in supporting the city's public transport infrastructure while generating revenue.

9.4cr tender to raze and rebuild Kavi Subhash, Rly Board team visits station

1 2 Kolkata: Metro Railway floated an e-tender of Rs 9.4 crore for razing and rebuilding the Dakshineswar-bound (Up) platform of Kavi Subhash Metro station. The meagre-amount tender, sources said, is only one of the many that will be floated to execute the project of rebuilding the terminal station of the North-South (Blue) line. Since only the Railway Board is empowered to sanction railway expenditures exceeding Rs 10 crore, officials from the Board in Delhi inspected the station in New Garia on Thursday to assess the damage. "The visit was necessary before estimating and allotting funds for the entire project of dismantling and rebuilding the station," an official said, indicating that multiple contractors will be engaged for comprehensive restoration of the damaged station. Therefore, more bids will follow. Passenger services to New Garia station were indefinitely suspended on Monday after wide cracks were spotted in the columns of the Up platform, which was undergoing subsidence for several months. Metro Railway had planned to start the repair work after this Pujas. When things started looking precariously unsafe, the authorities decided to close the terminal station and run truncated services of the Blue Line from Dakshineswar (north) to the second last station in the south — Shahid Khudiram. Sources then told TOI that the entire station must be rebuilt before it is declared safe for passenger services. The bids will open on Aug 5 and close on Aug 19. The contractor must complete the work in nine months. Meanwhile, the initial job — dismantling the platform shed (covering both Up and Down (New Garia-bound) platforms) — is already underway. Sources said local contractors have been deployed for the job and the "nomination" tender for it has been floated for a "token" amount. Officials said at the local level, the spending limit is Rs 10 crore. Therefore, the estimated cost for the preliminary work is Rs 9.4 crore, well within the permissible limit. Hours after the work to remove the platform sheet started, Metro Railway on Wednesday issued a statement quoting the scope of work in the e-tender, saying it targets to complete the dismantling and construction of the Up platform with its columns in nine months, based on recommendations by railway consultancy firm RITES. Sources said this was the first and preliminary stage of the entire project. "The authorities have set the restoration work rolling. The project would involve several stages and meticulous planning. Even if there is tremendous pressure to reopen the station, the restoration cannot be a hurried job, again, for the sake of passenger safety," said an official.

Why Noida must fast-track its skywalk plan at this office hub in Sector 62

Noida: Noida Authority is preparing to build a circular skywalk equipped with a travelator at the Model Town crossing near the Sector 62-63 roundabout along Delhi-Meerut Expressway to ease traffic congestion in the area and ensure safer pedestrian movement. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Being a crucial junction where jaywalking is rampant, the skywalk will not only facilitate easier crossing of Vishwakarma Road outside the Electronic City Metro station, but it will also benefit thousands of commuters who walk through to board buses and other public transport services to Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, and other destinations. A hub of IT firms and educational institutions, Sector 62 is a key area that sees massive traffic every day. The area also includes the Blue Line's Electronic City metro station, making it a major transit point for professionals, students, and other commuters. Surendra Kumar Gupta, president of the federation of Sector 62 RWAs, said that commuters heading to or from Sectors 59, 61, 62, 63, 51, 71, etc., regularly use this route. "People coming from Meerut exit here to reach Noida, while many also travel from here to Delhi. The junction becomes chaotic during morning and evening peak hours, with many pedestrians forced to jaywalk, risking their lives due to the lack of a convenient crossing," he said. The area is further congested by encroachments from e-rickshaws and autos ferrying passengers to various sectors in Noida and Ghaziabad. Footpaths remain largely unusable due to the presence of street vendors and hawkers, leaving little space for pedestrians. Meanwhile, SP Singh, general manager at Noida Authority, acknowledged the challenges and said that while a foot overbridge (FOB) already exists about 200 metres away from the crossing, many people avoid using it due to the distance. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "We plan to build a 400-metre-long circular skywalk with a width of 4 metres, connecting all four directions at the crossing. It will be equipped with a travelator and will also be linked to the existing FOB to facilitate people crossing the DME," he said. The skywalk will be built above the ground to mirror the roundabout. It will be around 400 m long and covered with an iron roof so that people can use it comfortably even during rain or heat. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 40 crore, and the authority aims to complete it within a year. The design and drawings have been submitted to IIT Delhi for technical vetting. "We expect to receive IIT's clearance soon. Any suggestions for design modifications will be incorporated, following which we will begin the tendering process and move to construction," Singh added.

New train of thought? Blue Line to catch up with Orange for joint run by 2028: Officials

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) has gained fresh impetus in developing Bhopal Metro, following initial delay mostly linked to the pandemic. MPRMCL managing director S Krishna Chaitanya said, "The entire metro network (Orange line and Blue lines, encompassing Phase I and Phase II, is expected to be operational by 2028", indicating a optimistic revised timeline, following early complications in planning and execution, particularly in densely populated regions like Karond, Phase I has undergone strategic realignment. Phase II's implementation has been streamlined through a dedicated organisation, enhanced collaboration with district authorities, and expedited infrastructure planning. According to Chaitanya, as for priority corridor (depot to AIIMS-Bhopal 7 km) crucial infrastructure including entry and exit points at AIIMS and Alkapuri stations will be finished soon. That will enable Bhopal Metro priority corridor to obtain safety certification from the Commissioner of Railway Safety. RSDO certification is expected to come about by Aug 15. These approval is crucial for commencing passenger operations by Oct. The Orange Line, stretching approximately 16 km, will establish connectivity between Karond Circle and AIIMS, featuring two underground stations. The Blue Line, an entirely elevated 14-km route, will connect Bhadbhada Square to Ratnagiri Tiraha.
