Mint2 days ago
Tata Motors has updated the Punch EV with two new colour options and faster charging capabilities. The electric SUV is now offered in Pure Grey and Supernova Copper, the latter previously seen on the Tata Safari Adventure X Plus variant launched recently.
The Punch EV now also supports 1.2C charging, enabling it to go from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in just 40 minutes. Tata claims that a 50 kW DC fast charger can add 90 km of range in 15 minutes. However, this faster charging feature is exclusive to the Long Range variants.
The vehicle is available with two battery options. The Mid-Range model features a 25 kWh pack, providing an estimated range of 265 km per charge, while the Long Range version employs a 35 kWh pack capable of up to 365 km on a full charge.
Powering the Mid-Range is a single electric motor delivering 80 bhp and 114 Nm of torque. The Long Range variant is equipped with a more powerful motor producing 120 bhp and 190 Nm of torque. The SUV can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 9.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 140 kmph.
In terms of features, the Punch EV includes a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a digital instrument cluster, an air purifier, a 360-degree camera with blind-spot monitoring, and an electric sunroof. Its safety features include six airbags as standard, ESP, an Electronic Parking Brake with auto-hold, and more.
While there are no direct rivals to the Tata Punch EV in the Indian market, it competes closely with cars such as the Citroen eC3 and the Mahindra XUV400 EV.

Tata, Merck explore exclusive chemical deal for Dholera semiconductor facility

ETtech Tata Electronics is in discussions with German chemicals giant Merck for a potential exclusive long-term agreement, people aware of the developments told ET. The deal would see Merck become a primary supplier of specialty chemicals and materials essential for semiconductor manufacturing at Tata's upcoming Dholera facility. The Dholera fab, a 91,000 crore ($11 billion) project, is a joint venture with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (PSMC) of Taiwan. It's a cornerstone of India's ambitious push to establish a domestic semiconductor ecosystem. As construction progresses and the plant gears up for production by 2026, securing a steady and reliable supply of ultra-pure chemicals is paramount. A potential partnership with Merck will help seal this gap, analysts said. 'Tata Electronics is in active negotiations with Merck,' said one of the persons. ' Tata is evaluating the offer and is yet to sign on the dotted line but securing a chemicals partner is very much on their agenda. It will boil down to whether they agree to the exclusivity.' Semiconductor manufacturing uses more than 150 chemicals and over 30 gases and minerals in the production processes. Analysts said this exclusive partnership would provide Tata Electronics with supply chain stability, a critical factor in the volatile global semiconductor market and will help Merck make a foray into India's burgeoning semiconductor industry.'We have been monitoring semiconductor manufacturing developments in India for the past couple of years,' a Merck spokesperson said. 'We believe that India is becoming an increasingly important partner in the global semiconductor ecosystem. However, at this time it is too early to talk about concrete plans for India. We continue to closely follow opportunities that align with our strategic goals.'Tata Electronics didn't respond to queries. Merck is a global leader in specialty chemicals and serves as a crucial ancillary supplier for both existing and future chipmakers, said Neil Shah, vice president of research at Counterpoint Research. It provides a comprehensive portfolio of high-purity materials, including chemicals, gases, and metrology and inspection solutions. 'These offerings support chipmakers throughout various stages of manufacturing, from deposition and etching to final quality control,' he explained. 'An exclusive agreement between Merck and Tata Electronics would create significant strategic advantages for both companies. For Tata Electronics, an exclusive partnership would ensure a consistent, prioritized, and uninterrupted supply of critical materials, mitigating supply chain risks. Having a special price lock-in often comes with exclusivity.' It will allow Tata Electronics to leverage Merck's extensive supplier experience and R&D capabilities. It could thus lead to the development of robust processes, improved manufacturing yields and an accelerated timeline for their chip production.'For Merck, partnering with Tata Electronics, a key player in India's emerging semiconductor landscape, would be a major strategic win,' Shah said. 'As India becomes a more important market for chip manufacturing, this partnership would provide Merck with significant scale and a strong foothold. This position would enable Merck to expand its operational base in India, invest in local R&D, and potentially benefit from government incentives.'Merck will require a robust ecosystem to establish a successful chemicals plant in Gujarat. This includes not only reliable infrastructure--electricity, water, security, logistics--but also a well-developed upstream supply chain with local partners in raw materials to packaging. Shah said this 'holistic ecosystem' is essential to support and sustain Merck's was the first to report in February that Merck was looking to set up a specialty chemicals facility in India. In May, Union minister for electronics and information technology Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that Merck, among other companies, was gearing up for the growth of India's semiconductor industry. Mumbai: Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd will develop new petrol, diesel and electric vehicle models on one common technology platform that will give it the flexibility to meet global emission norms and adjust its products based on market demand, as competition in the world's third-largest automobile market intensifies. While revealing its new vehicle platform NU_IQ, the company on Friday unveiled design prototypes of four new sports utility vehicles (SUVs) that will be based on the platform. These SUVs based on the new platform will begin arriving in the markets in 2027. The automaker, however, did not commit to the launch of hybrid vehicles just yet. Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) joins Tata Motors in securing access to a technology platform that can accommodatemultiple powertrains. Tata Motors has access to Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) technology through its wholly-owned British subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover. The MLA platform can accommodate petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles. Vehicle platforms or architecture are the foundational structure of the car with major components and systems in place on which different models can be developed. The new set of announcements was part of the company's annual event held on 15 August, with this year's edition in the country's financial capital Mumbai. 'Hybrid vehicles are not part of the architecture yet. This platform is currently focused on petrol, diesel and electric vehicles," Rajesh Jejurikar, executive director and chief executive officer (auto and farm sector), M&M, told reporters on the sidelines of the launch. 'Our earlier stance on electric vehicles remains unchanged, which is that if there is customer demand, we will bring hybrid vehicles." Mahindra and Mahindra's share price has increased by 6% so far in 2025, as against a 4% rise in the benchmark Nifty50. Mahindra is locked in a fierce battle with Hyundai Motor India and Tata Motors to occupy the second spot in India's automobile pecking order. So far in FY26, Mahindra has been able to beat Hyundai to the second spot in terms of wholesales in all four months, but it in retail sales in July. Anish Shah, group CEO at Mahindra and Mahindra, said that after years of dominance by foreign carmakers, domestic companies are finally making their mark. 'There was a time not long ago, global automakers dominated the Indian roads. Today, the tide has turned. Indian companies like Mahindra are at the forefront of technology, scale and ambitions," Shah said at the gathering. His comments come after Mahindra dislodged Hyundai Motor India from the second position in the first quarter of the current financial year. Subhabrata Sengupta, partner at Avalon Consulting, noted that the biggest advantage that Mahindra gets from the new platform is the ability to hedge according to market needs. 'A platform where ICE (internal combustion engine) and EV can be developed gives the company the flexibility to react quickly to market trends. If EVs pick up more, the company can move production to meet demand quickly, and vice-versa," Sengupta said. The development of a multiple powertrain model also comes at a time when the new emission norms, CAFE 3, are scheduled to come into force in 2027. Jejurikar emphasised that the new tech platform will allow it to be flexible with production of vehicles, enabling it to meet emission norms effectively. CAFE 3 (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) norms are India's upcoming regulations aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles. These norms will set a cap on the average CO2 emissions of a carmaker's entire fleet, pushing them to produce more fuel-efficient vehicles. 'The new platform will allow the company to accommodate production requirements quickly between diesel, petrol and EVs with CAFE norms in mind. Currently, most of the Mahindra sales are coming from diesel models which are fuel-guzzling," Sengupta added. In FY25, 77% of Mahindra's total 551,000 sales in the domestic market were diesel models. With the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) finalising the CAFE 3 norms, automakers are in talks with the government to seek relaxations, saying that the proposed targets are too stiff. Jejurikar remained unfazed about the looming threat of strict implementation of fuel efficiency norms in the country and different regulations in foreign markets where Mahindra is looking to establish its presence using its current products and new line-ups for 2027. 'We will follow a phased approach to enter different markets. In the first phase, we will enter our known markets such as South Africa and Australia followed by further expansion to new markets over the next years," he said. To accommodate development of electric and ICE vehicles on the same platform, the company will utilize a capacity of 240,000 units from 2027at its Chakan plant for the production of newly-designed vehicles. To increase exports, Mahindra is looking to introduce its India-made electric cars in the UK and other global markets.
