Nebraska football to get visit from 2027 three-star safety

USA Today4 days ago
Class of 2027 three-star safety Zykee Scott is scheduled to visit the Nebraska football program for the first time on September 19. This will take place as the Huskers get ready to take on the Michigan Wolverines. This was reported by Rivals.com's Tim Verghese.
Scott is the No. 37 overall linebacker in the 2027 class and the No. 14 overall player in his class from the state of Pennsylvania, according to the Rivals industry rankings. Currently, he has offers from the likes of Penn State, Syracuse, West Virginia, and Kent State.
He had 24 total tackles in eight games last season to go along with a sack, according to statistics from Maxpreps.com.
The 2027 Nebraska football recruiting class has only one commitment thus far, in quarterback Trae Taylor. The four-star signal caller is certainly an important piece of the class, and it appears as though the Huskers are going to make a push for top-tier talent in the class overall. Scott would playmaker on the defensive side of football.

What Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule said following the Big Red Preview

Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule met with the media following the annual Fan Day and Big Red Preview on Saturday. The Husker coach said that several players did not participate in the evening practice due to injury. Wide receiver Jackson Carpenter, running back Kwinten Ives, wide receiver Dane Key, defensive lineman Gabe Moore, and running back Trent Uhlir sat out on Saturday night. Nebraska will open the 2025 college football season on Thursday, August 28, when the Huskers face the Cincinnati Bearcats at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. The kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. CT. Find comments from head coach Matt Rhule by scrolling below. Rhule on fall camp and the players' mindset. 'I've been really, really pleased this week with the effort and attitude every single day,' he said. 'They're trying to get better. They like football. They like practice. It's a clear step in the right direction.' Rhule on his message to the team ahead of an open practice. 'I'd like them to be very appreciative of all the people that came out here today,' he said. 'I'd like them to be very appreciative of the fanfest. I'd like them to be appreciative of all the people that came out there. Last year was a little different – a different schedule. So this was me getting on the mic, it was kind of fun. Rhule on the importance of a physical practice. This is work today. This is our first day in full pads. In the NCAA right now, you get one day of full pads in the acclimation and then you get eight more times in full pads before the first game. Just think about that. You get nine times in full pads. Nine times you can actually, physically tackle someone before the first game. If you want to know why early-season football sometimes looks pretty sloppy, that's why." Rhule on the need to be a business-oriented team. We don't have any time to waste. I'd like them to entertain the crowd with their effort, their physicality. I haven't really said very much. To me, we have so much work to get done. This is a really business-oriented team. I want them to have fun, I want them to dap people up at the end and all that, but we just have to get better with football while we're out there. That's important to me, the fans are really important to me. That stadium is really important to me, and winning home field. This will be the first time under the lights at Memorial Stadium. I expect us to play to a certain standard when we're in there.' Rhule on transfer players and how they've meshed with the team. 'I'll be honest with you, I don't think anymore about who's the transfers,' he said. 'They're all on our team. I guess that would be like Dasan (McCullough), (Andrew) Marshall, (Marques) Watson-Trent. The thing with those guys is they walked in from day one – we were really diligent this year about, I don't want to bring anyone in here who complains about having to eat at the training table. I fixed that problem. I didn't want to break anyone in here who complains about practice. Rhule on coaching a team that likes to practice. Practice on Thursday was shorter. Dylan (Raiola) is yelling at me, like, get another rack. They're all like, let's get another rack. Dylan walked off, he always makes fun of me. He's like, 'yeah, we like practice.' I want guys who like practice. They brought that. Dasan has brought that. Not that they brought it to a team that didn't have it, they've just assimilated into a bunch of guys who love practice. There's not a deal where it's like, that guy is a transfer, that guy has been one of us for a long time. It's very much like, we're all in it together. It's a really healthy thing. They have a lot of talent. I'll say this about Marshall. I don't get asked a lot of questions about this guy. This guy is as professional as can be. He practices and behaves like a pro. He doesn't say a lot. He's a really good football player. He's going to play really well for us. I respect the heck out of him as the competitor and professional he is.' Nebraska football freshman wide receiver Cortez Mills named to South Florida Watch List

Nebraska football freshman wide receiver Cortez Mills was named to Rivals' list of five freshmen from South Florida who can make an impact in 2025. The list was compiled by Marcus Benjamin on Friday. Mills comes to Nebraska after putting together an accomplished high school career. He had 1,640 yards as a junior and 466 yards and six touchdowns as a senior in high school. He was selected to the Navy All-American Game and looks to make an impact at the collegiate level. Mills' big-play threat ability certainly lends itself to the opportunity to see the field. Benjamin seemed to be extremely high on Mills, as he wrote about in his piece. "The Cornhuskers have a relatively young receiving corps, giving Cortez Mills a real opportunity to get on the field early this season. Aside from projected starter, senior Dane Key, Mills will be battling underclassmen for the most part for playing time." Although there is depth at the wide receiver position, Mills could have the opportunity to get on the field early. The Huskers' wide receiver group has been revamped, and offensive coordinator Dana Holgerson has made it clear that he will play the best wide receivers. Mills could certainly fall into that category sooner rather than later. 30 Most Important Bears of 2025: Colston Loveland (No. 14)

The Chicago Bears are gearing up for an exciting 2025 NFL season, which features some new faces within the organization poised to get the franchise back to its winning ways. That starts with the hiring of Ben Johnson as head coach, as well as overhauling the interior offensive line, adding pieces on defense and a potenital impactful rookie draft class. Every day from now right up through training camp, we're counting down our 30 Most Important Bears for the 2025 season. We'll recap their 2024 season, look ahead to 2025 and tackle the biggest question facing them this year. Up next at No. 14 is tight end Colston Loveland, Chicago's first-round pick who could give Johnson his own version of Sam LaPorta right away. Background Position: Tight end Age: 21 Experience: 1st season 2025 cap hit: $4.82 million 2024 recap Loveland entered his final season at Michigan on top of the college football world. He and the Wolverines were coming off a national championship run, and he was cementing himself as one of the best tight ends in college football. While Michigan wasn't able to replicate their success in 2024 due to a number of key departures, Loveland still produced as their top weapon. In 10 games, Loveland caught 56 passes for 582 yards and five touchdowns, despite experiencing below-average quarterback play. Loveland showed he can be a matchup nightmare, lining up against defensive backs on the outside and shaking them off with ease. His excellent career vaulted him to become a first-round prospect, where he ended up going No. 10 overall to the Bears after a productive pre-draft process with the front office. 2025 outlook The Bears didn't spend a top-10 pick on a tight end just to feature him sparingly his rookie year. Loveland will be a big factor in the Bears' offensive plans as someone who can line up in the slot as well as on the line. Chicago can get creative with Loveland and veteran Cole Kmet, lining both up in 12 personnel and creating mismatches on passing downs. Tight end is a difficult position to learn for young players, but Loveland's route running is exceptional for his age and experience. Johnson will throw as much as he can at the 21-year-old, and he should become a favorite target of quarterback Caleb Williams sooner rather than later. Big question: When will Loveland be fully healthy? The only concern regarding Loveland at this point is the status of his injured shoulder. During his last year at Michigan, Loveland underwent shoulder surgery and has been rehabbing throughout the winter and spring. He has been around at Halas Hall but hasn't been able to fully participate in drills. Those reps are vital to his development early on, and while both he and Johnson are confident he will be ready to go early in camp, he still needs to get cleared by the team doctors. Loveland himself said he feels 100%, but notes that he doesn't know if he will be out on the field when camp begins. Bears fans may have flashbacks to Kevin White or Chris Williams when it comes to first-round picks with injuries, but hopefully this is one that gets resolved right away and Loveland can begin establishing his chemistry with Williams on the field. 30 Most Important Bears of 2025 #30 - RB Roschon Johnson #29 - QB Case Keenum #28 - K Cairo Santos #27 - DT Andrew Billings #26 - CB Tyrique Stevenson #25 - WR Luther Burden III #24 - RG Jonah Jackson #23 - LB Tremaine Edmunds #22 - DE Dayo Odeyingbo #21 - S Kevin Byard #20 - S Jaquan Brisker #19 - LB T.J.
