USC football countdown to kickoff—Dion Bailey in focus

The countdown to USC's 2025 football season is officially on! The Trojans kick off their new campaign 18 days from today. You need something to help you while away the days and hours in the spring and summer. This is one way to do so. In this new series, countdown to kickoff, we will be counting down the days by highlighting a notable Trojan who wore each number. Today, we look at former USC linebacker/safety Dion Bailey. Position: Linebacker/safety Years played at USC: 2010-2013 Career highlights: Bailey arrived at USC as a safety and redshirted his first year on campus in 2010. Prior to the 2011, he was converted to linebacker, where he earned a starting role and impressed, earning freshman All-American honors. He returned as a starter at linebacker in 2012, before switching back to safety in 2013. Bailey finished his time in Cardinal and Gold with 221 total tackles, 11 interceptions, 3.5 sacks, and three forced fumbles. Of those picks, perhaps none was bigger than the one in the Trojans' 2013 upset of No. 4 Stanford. With the game tied at 17 in the fourth quarter, the Cardinal had a second and goal from the Trojans' ten yard-line. Bailey picked off Stanford quarterback Kevin Hogan's pass, keeping the score knotted. USC would go on to earn a 20-17 victory on a last-second field goal by kicker Andre Heidari. After USC: Following his redshirt junior season in 2013, Bailey declared for the 2014 NFL Draft, despite not being projected as a high draft pick. He went undrafted and signed as a free agent with the Seattle Seahawks. In Seattle, Bailey finally got to play with Pete Carroll, the head coach who recruited him to USC, but left prior to his freshman year. Bailey appeared in seven NFL regular games with the Seahawks and the New York Jets. He finished his professional career with 22 tackles, two passes defended, and 0.5 sacks. He was released by New York prior to the start of the 2016 season.

ESPN's Greg McElroy calls Auburn a 'sleeper' ahead of the 2025 season

The preseason Associated Press poll for the 2025 season was released this week, and the Auburn Tigers were on the outside by receiving 10 votes. ESPN analyst and sports talk show host Greg McElroy shared his opinion of the poll following its release. During his spiel, McElroy included Auburn as a "sleeper" team for the top 25 by season's end. McElroy shared the same sentiments as ESPN's David Hale by pointing out that Auburn caught many unlucky breaks last season and does not expect the program to experience the misfortune of losing multiple one-score games during the upcoming season. 'It's just, there's no way (Auburn) can be as snakebit as they were last year," McElroy said during a recent episode of Always College Football. "The football gods won't allow, it's not likely. I guess it can happen, Nebraska fans are like 'We've been that way for awhile now, we've lost a lot of one-score games.' I get it, so I understand it can happen for sure.' One of the reasons why McElroy feels that Auburn's "receiving votes" status can change early on is thanks to their ability to revamp several position groups through the transfer portal. The defense held its own last season, but enhancements at wide receiver and offensive line could propel the Tigers to new heights under head coach Hugh Freeze. While McElroy respects Auburn and feels that they may be underrated heading into the new year, he is not ready to say that the Tigers are ready to contend for their first-ever College Football Playoff bid. 'So I look at Auburn and for them to be 5, 8, 11, 12 spots – so basically 37th in college football – to me is way too far (down),' McElroy said. 'I think Auburn has a chance to be a Top 25 team. I don't think they're a (College Football) Playoff team, but they have a chance to be a Top 25 team for sure. Especially with the pieces that've improved from last year to this year.' Auburn will get its first chance to make a statement on Friday, Aug. 29, when it faces Baylor on the road at 7 p.m. CT. Dodgers' Dave Roberts Has Blunt Assessment After Losing Division Lead to Padres

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Los Angeles Dodgers' recent swoon has been as fascinating as it's been completely unpredictable. Though they have the best roster in Major League Baseball on paper, the Dodgers have been mediocre at best, and bordering on awful. They entered Wednesday 12-20 since July 4, which is the fifth-worst record in the game over that stretch. A 7-6 walk-off loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday night represented a low point of sorts. The Dodgers have lost all five games of the Freeway Series this year, and more importantly, they've lost their lead in the division. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - MAY 14: Manager Dave Roberts #30 of the Los Angeles Dodgers during a 9-3 win over the Athletics at Dodger Stadium on May 14, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - MAY 14: Manager Dave Roberts #30 of the Los Angeles Dodgers during a 9-3 win over the Athletics at Dodger Stadium on May 14, 2025 in Los Angeles, to the San Diego Padres' win over the San Francisco Giants, the Dodgers shared first place with the Friars at 68-52 entering Wednesday. It's the first time since 2010 that San Diego has had at least a share of first place after the All-Star break. The message is clear for the Dodgers right now: Start winning games, or we won't be tied with these surging Padres for very long. "Now it's a new season," Roberts said, per Dennis Lin of The Athletic. "You look at the standings, and we just got to play better baseball and find ways to win games." Tuesday night's game was a roller coaster, as Shohei Ohtani hit into an inning-ending triple play, then responded with a go-ahead home run in his next at-bat. Unfortunately for the Dodgers, Alex Vesia gave up the lead on three walks and a sacrifice fly. Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman is hoping to quickly turn the page. "It's just how you weather it," Freeman said, per Sonja Chen of "How you respond and come back the next day. ... See how we respond (Wednesday). Shohei on the mound -- so see if he can throw nine innings and hit seven home runs." That series finale against the Angels will begin Wednesday at 6:38 p.m. PT from Angel Stadium in Anaheim.
