Cyberfraud syndicate that use illegal SIM boxes busted
The operation led to the seizure of four SIM box devices and arrest of one Mukesh Kumar from Narayanpur village in Bhojpur district.
Acting on specific intelligence and technical surveillance, a special investigation team was formed under the additional director general of EOU and deputy inspector general (cybercrime) Sanjay Kumar. The operation was led by cyber DSP Pankaj Kumar.
Sanjay Kumar said investigation revealed that the SIM boxes were used to operate a parallel exchange, converting international VOIP calls into local GSM calls illegally.
"This facilitated cyberfrauds, originating from international scam hubs in countries like Cambodia and Thailand, target Indian citizens. Preliminary investigations suggest that thousands of fraudulent calls were made daily using these SIM boxes, causing significant revenue loss to the department of telecommunications worth crores of rupees, which is currently being assessed," the DIG said, further revealing that the operation requires a large number of illegal SIM cards.

The investigation also uncovered a network where SIM suppliers colluded with telecom service distributors.
"Some common service centre operators misled the public by promising benefits from fake govt schemes, collecting biometric data, and using it to obtain SIM cards in bulk through telecom distributors and retailers. These SIM cards were then used for cyberfraud via SIM boxes," he said.
The DIG added that the investigation has also identified other suspects and locations, which are currently being raided. The syndicate's exposure has linked it to several cases reported on National Cybercrime Reporting Portal across the country.

ACB's sting op fails, but digital evidence leads to FIR against SI in Haryana
Gurgaon: Six months after an Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) sting to arrest a sub-inspector (SI) failed, an FIR has been lodged against him — courtesy of digital evidence. On Saturday, ACB registered the case against SI Dharmendra after analysing digital evidence in the form of call recordings and WhatsApp chat. This came after another complaint — in May — lodged by Niyamat alias Badshah, a resident of Pinangwan in Nuh, about an alleged bribe demand. The case has been registered at ACB Gurgaon under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act. An ACB official said, "Based on the evidence, the bribery charge was found to be true." During the investigation, the statements of the complainant Niyamat and the recordings related to the bribery conversation between the complainant and Dharmendra, then in charge of Akeda outpost, were studied leading to the filing of the FIR. In July, ACB had arrested a woman head constable posted as an investigating officer at the Women police station, Manesar, for accepting a bribe of Ra 5,000 in cash. Prameela, was caught red-handed while taking the bribe from the complainant near her vehicle parked outside the police station premises. In May, ACB had booked an industrial inspector who allegedly took a Rs 60,000 bribe from a youth looking for a job. The Narnaul-based inspector promised to facilitate a govt-subsidised loan through the district industrial centre (DIC) scheme. The scam came to light when the victim approached the ACB after failing to receive the promised loan.

Simba ‘sniffs' to glory at Telangana police meet
Hyderabad: Scoring an impressive 395 marks out of 400, 'Simba' of the canine squad specialised in detecting narcotics, won the gold medal in the second Telangana police duty meet held recently in Warangal. Simba was felicitated by the Ramangundam commissioner of police, Ambar Kishore Jha, at a programme organised on Aug 4. The duty meet, organised at the Police Training College (PTC) at Mamanoor in Warangal from Aug 1-3, saw Simba not only clinching the top spot in the narcotics tracking event but also emerging as the best performer among all the canines that participated in various events. Ambar Kishore Jha expressed hope that Simba would go on to win more accolades in the national police duty meet that will be held in Pune in Feb next year. "Simba is quick and accurate in sniffing out narcotics. We've been able to crack several cases, thanks to its efforts," said head constable M Venugopal Krishna, who is Simba's handler.
