Have sought funds from Centre for six irrigation works, says Karnataka Dy CM Shivakumar
Speaking to the media in New Delhi, the Deputy Chief Minister said they have sought Rs 804.66 crore for Sonnathi lift irrigation project; Rs 2,660.7 crore for Indi branch canal in Upper Krishna project; Rs 3,000 crore for third stage of Malaprabha canal; Rs 144.42 crore for Ghataprabha right bund canal and Chikkodi branch canal, and Rs 1,610 crore for a flood prevention project at Benne Halla. Shivakumar said they have learnt that one project has been approved, but they are yet to receive official confirmation.
Shivakumar said they have also appealed for 25% of funds for Yettinahole project, as it is a drinking water project. 'There were some complications as the forest department was not giving clearance. The Union environment minister has assured that the issue would be resolved soon,' he said. Responding to a question on the Upper Bhadra Project, he said they have sought funds and submitted revised cost estimates, as asked by the Centre. There is no guarantee until the funds are released, he said.
Kalasa-Banduri project
Shivakumar said Goa has claimed that Karnataka objected to its request to lay a power transmission line through Karnataka.
'We have told them we would support them if they support us on the Kalasa-Banduri project. The Union environment minister has told us he would convey his opinion on this in a week,' he said.
He said the Centre had given the go-ahead for the Kalasa-Banduri project when Karnataka had a BJP government. 'Based on that approval, our government had called for tenders. But the Goa government issued us a show-cause notice in 2023, and the case is in court now. We brought the issue to the attention of the Union environment minister. Goa does not have any locus standi to object to work in our state. We have already moved court regarding this,' he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday remembered the freedom fighters involved in the Kakori train conspiracy on its 100th anniversary, highlighting how the freedom fighters' courage showed the resentment among people against colonial rule. In a post on X, HM Shah said, "The 'Kakori Train Action' is a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and patriotism in the Indian freedom struggle. On August 9, 1925, brave heroes like Ram Prasad Bismil Ji, Chandra Shekhar Azad Ji, and Ashfaqulla Khan Ji ignited the torch of revolution against British looting, shaking the foundations of the British Empire." Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma also paid tribute to the freedom fighters involved in the event. CM Sharma stated that the contributions of the freedom fighters will forever inspire the spirit of patriotism in future generations. The Kakori Train Action or Kakori Conspiracy was a train robbery that took place at Kakori, a village near Lucknow, on 9 August 1925 during the Indian Independence Movement against the British colonial rule. The robbery was organised by the Hindustan Republican Association, and more than 40 persons were arrested in this incident. They were finally sentenced to death by the British government, and severe punishments were also given to those people who helped with the incident. The main purpose of the robbery was to protest against the heavy tax that was collected from the Indians and use the money to fund the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA) rather than leaving it with the Britishers.

Advanced early warning and control aircraft were also used for advanced surveillance. This is broadly what I can say without getting into too much," the DRDO Chairman expressing pride over the growing strength of India's defence research and development sector, Kamat mentioned, "It's indeed a proud moment for all of us. Odisha CM Majhi distributes ₹5,000 crore to one crore women under Subhadra scheme
On the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday (August 9, 2025) distributed ₹5,000 crore to around one crore women as the third instalment under the Subhadra Scheme. Mr. Majhi released the amount to beneficiaries through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) at a special event in Jeypore, Koraput district. Among the beneficiaries, 1,783 women are from Kotia panchayat in Koraput district near the Andhra Pradesh border, he said. The scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 17 last year and in just six-and-a-half months, all eligible women had been covered under the scheme, he added. "To make women economically independent, our government came up with this scheme," he said, adding that it has become the biggest women empowerment programme of the State. The CM added that the scheme helped lakhs of women to start their own businesses. He said the scheme also helped 17 lakh women to become 'Lakhpati Didis', part of an ambitious programme envisioned by PM Modi. Odisha has now secured the first position in the country for creating the maximum number of 'Lakhpati Didis', Mr. Majhi informed. The CM said his government has resolved to develop southern Odisha, which remained under-developed for decades. Mr. Majhi said his government has decided to set up the South Odisha Development Council (SODC) in line with the Western Odisha Development Council (WODC). A task force headed by Minister Nityananda Gond has been formed and a budgetary provision of Rs 200 crore was made to accelerate development in the region, Mr. Majhi added. Responding to a request by local MLA Taraprasad Bahinipati (Congress) at the programme, the chief minister assured that a Vande Bharat train would run from Jeypore to Bhubaneswar. He also informed that his government was making efforts to revive the shut Jeypore paper mill and set up a new degree college there. On this occasion, the CM also inaugurated 126 projects worth ₹309.42 crore and laid foundation stones for 436 projects to be executed with a total cost of ₹452 crore. Deputy Chief Ministers KV Singh Deo and Pravati Parida, Ministers Bibhuti Jena, Nityananda Gond and Gokulananda Mallik and local MP and MLA attended the event. Subhadra Yojana is designed to provide eligible women aged 21 to 60 years with ₹50,000 over five years, from 2024-25 to 2028-29. Each beneficiary will receive ₹10,000 per year in two installments of ₹5,000 each — one on Rakhi Purnima, and the other on International Women's Day (March 8).
