Tony Awards 2025 recap: Darren Criss, Cole Escola, Sarah Snook and Nicole Scherzinger among first-time winners

Yahoo3 hours ago

The 2025 Tony Awards were presented Sunday at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, with Maybe Happy Ending, a rom-com about a pair of robots who fall in love, winning six, including Best Musical, in a star-studded ceremony that featured a lot of firsts.
That included Darren Criss, who won his first Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical for Maybe Happy Ending, and Wicked star Cynthia Erivo, who dazzled as a first-time Tony Awards host.
Before her opening number, Erivo, who won a Tony Award in 2016 for her role in The Color Purple, received advice backstage from Oprah Winfrey, who told her, 'The only thing you need to do is be yourself.'
Onstage, Erivo poked fun at the nominees, including George Clooney, whom she described as 'an up-and-comer that I think you're going to be hearing a lot about.'
Clooney was nominated for a Tony Award in his Broadway debut for his portrayal of Edward R. Murrow in Good Night, and Good Luck but did not win.
Escola was the first openly nonbinary person to win Best Leading Actor in a Play for their portrayal of Mary Todd Lincoln in Oh Mary!, beating out Clooney, among others, for the award.
Escola accepted the award in a silvery-blue gown inspired by Bernadette Peters's look at the 1999 ceremony.
Actor Kara Young made history as the first Black person to win two Tonys consecutively for 'Purpose,' which also won Best New Play.
'Theater is a sacred space that we have to honor and treasure,' Young said in her acceptance speech. 'And it makes us united.'
Snook, best known for her TV work on HBO's Succession, won the Tony Award for Leading Actress in a Play for The Picture of Dorian Gray, in which she plays all 26 roles.
'I don't feel alone any night that I do this show,' Snook said in her acceptance speech. 'There are so many people onstage making it work and behind the stage making it work.'
Snook is the latest Succession actor to star on Broadway, with Jeremy Strong (An Enemy of the People), Kieran Culkin (Glengarry Glen Ross), Juliana Canfield (Stereophonic) and Molly Griggs (John Proctor Is the Villain) taking stage turns.
Snook said they all participate in 'a special group chat.'
'It's a really special group of people,' she said. 'We're all theater nerds deep down.'
Scherzinger won Best Leading Actress in a Musical for her Broadway debut role in Sunset Blvd., beating out Broadway legend Audra McDonald, who shares the record for most Tony Awards ever for a performer, six.
In her acceptance speech, the former Pussycat Dolls singer said Broadway's welcome has made her feel at home.
'Growing up, I always felt like I didn't belong, but you all have made me feel like I belong and I have come home at last,' Scherzinger said. 'So if there's anyone out there who feels like they don't belong or your time hasn't come, don't give up. Just keep on giving and giving because the world needs your love and your light now more than ever.'
The original cast of Hamilton also reunited onstage to mark the show's 10-year anniversary.
The cast, including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr. and Daveed Diggs, wore all black while performing a 'mixtape' medley of some of the musical's greatest hits, including 'My Shot,' 'You'll Be Back,' 'The Room Where It Happens' and 'History Has Its Eyes On You.'

Mia Farrow, Andrew Scott and Jean Smart Celebrate the Tony Awards Over Burgers and Fries at the Carlyle Hotel

After the after parties, come the after, after parties. Following the Tony Awards, many attendees flitted off to cast celebrations and the official MoMA party before landing at the annual event at the Carlyle, hosted by Rick Miramontez and John Gore. Upon entering, guests were met with camera flashes before entering into a dark, sea of people floating from booth-to-bar at the hotel, before hitting the back room where a band played songs like 'Come Fly With Me.' While she remained seated most of the night, it didn't stop people from going up to her and complimenting her performance. The 'Hacks' star graciously chatted with each person, shaking hands and laughing. After several minutes speaking with the star, one guest bragged to a friend: 'We have become very best friends with Jean Smart.…That's all we need in life.' Later on in the evening, she and actress Zoey Deutch, who wore a black, sequin gown, were all smiles, deep in conversation. Equally busy was Mia Farrow who chatted with Andrew Scott and sipped on a glass of white wine. Partygoers weren't shy to go up to the actress and compliment her on her role in the play 'The Roommate.' One fan said: 'You're incredible. We need to see more of you,' to which she very demurely responded 'Thank you. Bless you,' rubbing them on the arm. Farrow was seemingly just as excited about seeing Broadway's finest, as they were about meeting her. Ahead of the event, Farrow was eager to see Jonathan Groff perform and afterward was just as excited to gush about host Cynthia Erivo. Farrow departed at around 1:30 a.m., someone in her party saying it was time to get her home. Ariana DeBose, who hosted the Tony Awards last year, similarly said Erivo's hosting was one of the highlights of her evening…that and 'Jonathan Groff standing on Keanu Reeves' during his performance from 'Just in Time,' she said, laughing. Of course, DeBose, who was in the original cast of 'Hamilton,' also raved about getting to perform for the 10th anniversary during the awards. 'I'm biased,' she said before slinking off to sip her drink in a booth with friends. Meanwhile, Sara Bareilles snaked her way through the party holding up her silver, sequin gown to reveal a pair of white Converse. Busy Philipps arrived with soft pink hair, staying close to a small group of friends throughout the evening. Scott passed off his drink to pose for a slew of photos that lit up the dark bar area with flash. While guests mingled, some were pulled into a private area for interviews. Meanwhile, upstairs, a neon dance floor remained unused at 1:30 a.m., though a DJ did perform. Stations for late night food were also ready to go on the upper level for the inevitable munchies. At 1:45 a.m., a long line was forming of Tony goers still waiting to get into the party, including a large group of cast members from 'Sunset Blvd.' who all raised their hand in unison to let the bouncer know they were all together. Paul Tazewell, who won for 'Death Becomes Her,' slid in the line, just as the 'Sunset' crew was being let in. Where Has the Original Cast of ‘Hamilton' Been? We've Got Answers.

It has been nearly 10 years since the original cast of 'Hamilton' hit Broadway, igniting an international frenzy and becoming the biggest phenomenon the Great White Way had seen in years. On Sunday, 28 members from that cast reunited on the Tonys stage to perform a whirlwind medley of the show's biggest numbers. They performed portions of 'Non-Stop,' 'My Shot,' 'The Schuyler Sisters,' 'Guns and Ships,' 'You'll Be Back,' 'Yorktown,' 'The Room Where It Happens' and 'History Has Its Eyes on You.' At the 2016 Tonys, 'Hamilton' earned 16 nominations and won 11 prizes. Soon after, many of its cast members left the show to take time off or to pursue other projects. Here is a rundown of where everyone has been since that momentous opening run. Lin-Manuel Miranda Miranda transformed Broadway with 'Hamilton,' which he wrote and starred in, playing the founding father Alexander Hamilton. Miranda's rise to the top of Hollywood began after he left the show in 2016. That year he contributed to the score of 'Moana,' the animated feature, earning an Academy Award nomination for the original song 'How Far I'll Go.' Years later he earned another Oscar nomination for the original song 'Dos Oruguitas' from the animated film 'Encanto.' He also wrote for other musical films including, 'Mufasa: The Lion King' and 'The Little Mermaid,' the live-action remake starring Halle Bailey. He played Jack in 'Mary Poppins Returns' opposite Emily Blunt in 2018 and starred as the piragüero in the 2021 film adaptation of 'In the Heights,' the Broadway show he and Quiara Alegría Hudes created.
