Polestar 3 sets Guinness World Record for longest electric SUV range
The record attempt used the recently launched long-range single motor variant and took 22 hours and 57 minutes to complete in mixed weather conditions that included rain. The SUV achieved an efficiency of 12.1kWh/100km.
Professional efficiency drivers Sam Clarke, Kevin Booker and Richard Parker rotated every three hours to maintain alertness. The Polestar 3 reached its WLTP-rated range of 706km with 20% battery remaining and was able to travel an additional 12.8km after the battery reached 0%, stopping only once it reached a charger.
According to Polestar, the attempt was conducted using a standard production vehicle with no modifications, running on 20" wheels with Michelin Sport 4 EV tyres. Guinness World Records judge Paulina Sapinska oversaw the attempt, which was independently verified with video footage, GPS data, odometer readings and battery logs provided by Webfleet.
'We are proud to say we have a world record holder in the Polestar family,' said Polestar CEO Michael Lohscheller.
'This official Guinness World Record for range is another proof point that Polestar 3 is setting new standards. We will continue to push the boundaries of technology and electric performance.'

Introducing the BYD Atto 1: South Africa's most affordable electric car arriving soon
BYD is set to launch the Atto 1 locally soon. Mostly, South Africans are turning to hybrid cars, with full BEVs seen as being expensive, and despite a relatively high number of charging stations, range anxiety is still a thing. From an initial slow uptake of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) in South Africa, they're starting to make some inroads with a substantial year-on-year growth, albeit from a low base. Urban EV However, BEVs do make sense as a city runabout, which makes the announcement by BYD that it will be introducing the compact EV Atto 1 to South Africa, called the Dolphin Mini elsewhere, an interesting proposition. According to BYD, it's tailor-made for urban life to make EV ownership affordable, accessible, and fun for more South Africans. Grade levels BYD have not indicated which model they will be bringing in, but there are two available with the entry-level GL and higher-specced GS version. The GL is reportedly fitted with BYD's Blade battery with 30.1kWh and an estimated WLTP range of 250 kilometres, and the GS has a 38.9kWh battery with a WLTP range of 322 kilometres. At this stage, it's still speculation, and we'll know more once a launch date has been confirmed. Blade battery According to BYD, their Blade battery (it looks like a blade) provides superior safety, durability and performance. It uses lithium iron phosphate rather than lithium-ion batteries. They have put it through the Nail Penetration Test to test battery thermal runaway, simulating a serious accident. The Blade Battery gave off no smoke or fire, and the surface temperature only reached 30-60 degrees Celsius. In more tests that included being crushed, bent, heated in an oven to 300 degrees and overloaded by 260 percent there was no fire or explosion. BYD says it's aimed at students, young professionals, first-time buyers and city-based families.

Volvo confirms four new models for the South African market, and they're not all electric

Image: Supplied Volvo Car South Africa (VCSA) is set to launch four key new models in the coming year, with the company confirming recently that the new ES90 Sedan was on the radar for local introduction, along with the EX30 Cross Country and updated versions of the XC60 and XC90 SUVs. VCSA was at the centre of controversy earlier this year after the importer closed around half of its dealerships, essentially only leaving sales representation in the three major centres, and service outlets in more remote regions such as the Eastern Cape. This, it said, was due to the company shifting its focus to an all-electric future. However, while the new Volvo ES90 and EX30 Cross Country are fully electric, the updated XC60 and XC90 vehicles will offer a choice between mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid petrol power. 'Our focus is clear: we are committed to offering South African motorists more choice as they make the transition to electric driving,' said VCSA's new managing director Grant Locke. 'These new vehicles, paired with our ongoing investment in our local operations and services, underline the fact that we are here to stay and grow.' What can customers expect? Image: Supplied Volvo says the twin-motor flagship version, fitted with a 106kWh battery, can cover up to 700km on the WLTP testing cycle. Equally impressive is that 300km of range can be added in just 10 minutes when the car is plugged into a 350kW fast charger. Like the new EX90 SUV, the Volvo ES90 is crafted around the SPA2 vehicle architecture and features the company's new Superset tech stack, consisting of a single set of hardware and software modules that will underpin all upcoming EV models. The cabin features Volvo's new-generation 14.5-inch infotainment system, with built-in Google and a 5G-capable operating system powered by Snapdragon and Qualcomm Technologies. The vehicle's advanced safety features are powered by an advanced array of sensors, including five radars, seven cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors and one lidar device. 'This sensor set enables vision beyond human range to help avoid collisions and hazards on the road,' Volvo said. "Together with its powerful core computers, the ES90 continues our new era of safety we established with the EX90.' Volvo EX30 Cross Country Although the EX30 is already classified as a crossover vehicle, the CC treatment adds a few rugged touches to the mix, while simultaneously ushering in new adventure experience packages for customers. Local pricing and specifications for the EX30 Cross Country will be announced closer to the South African launch later this year. Image: Supplied The new model features a twin-motor all-wheel drive system and its ride height has reportedly been raised by 18mm. It also rolls on unique black wheels, which can be optionally fitted with 18-inch all terrain tyres. The full powertrain line-up for the EX30 Cross Country has yet to be announced but, depending on the model, it will cover up to 427km between charges, and charge from 10 to 80 percent in as little as 26 minutes. Volvo XC60 and XC90 facelifts While the all-electric EX90 flagship SUV and upcoming EX60 were expected to replace the petrol-powered XC90 and XC60 models, Volvo has now announced facelifted versions of the latter without any indication of when the ICE model will be discontinued. The ICE-powered Volvo XC90 has been given a new lease on life. Inside, they feature Volvo's latest 11.2-inch free-standing touchscreen, boasting 21% sharper pixel density and enhanced functionality.
