Ruby Franke's husband explains why he asked her to stop contacting him from prison: ‘I'm very angry'

Independent25-02-2025
Kevin Franke, the husband of YouTube family vlogger and convicted child abuser Ruby Franke, has opened up about his current relationship with his soon-to-be ex-wife.
Last year, Ruby and her business partner Jodi Hildebrant were sentenced to up to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to four counts of aggravated child abuse, including trying to convince Ruby's two youngest children that they were evil, possessed by demons, and needed to be punished. Ruby's four minor children were taken into the custody of the Department of Children and Family Services.
'The last letter that I received from her from prison was maybe in March or April of last year,' Kevin told the People about Ruby, who is currently serving her sentence at the Utah State Correctional Facility.
'And then I requested the Department of Corrections to ask her to stop writing me. I didn't want to hear anymore. I didn't like what she was saying.'
Kevin refused to reveal what Ruby wrote to him. 'I'm not going to share,' he told People. 'That's between her and me. But it just didn't feel right and it didn't feel good, and I'm very angry. I'm still very angry.'
Currently, Kevin is still in the process of filing for divorce from Ruby and said they were 'close' to reaching a settlement.
Kevin, his oldest son Chad, 20, and his oldest daughter Shari, 21 will all be opening up about their lives with Ruby in a new three-part docuseries on Hulu called Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke.
The show will be available to stream on Thursday.
The Hulu series comes almost two months after Shari's memoir The House of My Mother: A Daughter's Quest for Freedom was released. In the book, she wrote about her life on the '8 Passengers' family vlog channel and how her mom was 'sneaking around' with Hildebrant.
After Ruby was arrested in 2023, she admitted to several horrific acts, as shown in a statement filed in court to support her guilty pleas, which said she abused two of her children from May 22 2023 until her arrest. She said that she tried to convince two of her children that they were evil and possessed and that the 'punishments' were a form of repentance. She described the abuse as 'acts of love.'
Traumatic details revealed that she forced her son into long physical tasks outside in summer without shoes or adequate water, leaving him with 'repeated and serious sunburns.' He was also denied sufficient food, and when he was given food, they were very plain meals while the rest of the household got more flavourful food, the plea agreement said.
In February 2024, Ruby was handed four one to 15-year sentences in prison, one for each of the four counts of child abuse to which she pleaded guilty in December 2023. However, she and Hildebrandt will only serve up to 30 years in prison due to a Utah state law that caps the sentence duration for consecutive penalties. The Utah Board of Pardons and Parole will consider their behavior while incarcerated and determine how much of that time each will spend behind bars.

Fortnite proximity chat could come to Battle Royale as leakers report internal file shakeup

Fortnite could be set to welcome one of the most controversial features in gaming, as leakers claim that proximity chat is on the way for the battle royale title. Fortnite proximity chat is reportedly on the horizon, with leaks suggesting that Epic Games is gearing up to introduce this feature in Battle Royale. ‌ Fortnite offers a thrilling experience for most players lucky enough to get their hands on it. However, let's face it – for many, it's a highly social affair. Sure, you can go solo, but nothing compares to teaming up with a squad. The game makes group play enticing with easy party joining and coordinated cosmetics available in the shop, like the Fantastic Four range that was released not too long ago. With the addition of Power Rangers and the Shock 'N Awesome Battle Pass, coordinating Outfits is easier than ever. ‌ Playing with mates is crucial, but squad-based games aren't always ideal as they often pair you with strangers you're expected to trust with your victory. Striking the right balance can be tough, especially when Fortnite emphasises cooperative play, particularly in competitive matches. It can be daunting to feel prepared for such a challenge. ‌ However, this dynamic could soon shift, with new claims hinting at the arrival of a certain iconic feature previously seen in other modes. So, the question arises – is Fortnite about to introduce proximity chat? Leakers @Wensoing and @Loolo_WRLD have teamed up on Twitter to suggest that the feature, which allows players to communicate with nearby teammates or enemies, might be coming to Battle Royale. They've inferred this because Epic Games has shifted some files for the Creative Mode proximity chat, a feature present since August 2024 (via @Hypex), potentially paving the way for its inclusion in the Battle Royale mode, where players could switch it on or off as they wish. This would undoubtedly be a game-changing development – if players can directly address their opponents while they're down, it could usher in unprecedented levels of trolling. Players are likely to start goading the 13 year olds they've just knocked out before sending them back to the lobby. It's unclear when this new feature might be launched, but there was a four-month gap between leakers hinting at proximity chat coming to Fortnite Creative (via @Hypex) and its actual introduction, so we might be looking at a similar wait. Alternatively, the feature might just need to be dropped into the core experience for its official debut, so we could see it sooner rather than later. Brace yourselves for some serious ribbing from randoms in your lobby.

NBA 2K25 player spends £24,000 on microtransactions: 'It's not worth it'

A fan has revealed how much he spent on in-game currency in NBA 2K25, as he warns others about following in his footsteps. Free-to-play games have paved the way for predatory microtransactions in a litany of titles, and while it's easy to blame companies for enabling these practices, sometimes you have to turn the mirror on ordinary players. Microtransactions are often associated with skin cosmetics in titles like Fortnite, but there are plenty in full priced games too – especially sports games like EA Sports FC 25, which still uses what are essentially loot boxes for the Ultimate Team mode. These virtual collectible cards are prevalent in other sports games like NBA 2K25, and for one player they've cost him upwards of $32,000. In a video posted on his channel, YouTuber 2KOG breaks down his transaction history in NBA 2K25 over the past year. Within 11 months from September 4, 2024 to August 5, 2025, he claims to have spent $32,831,68 (£24,384) on the basketball sim. As seen in the video, the bulk of these transactions have gone towards virtual in-game currency for MyTeam cards – NBA 2K's equivalent of Ultimate Team – along with season passes. 2KOG isn't proud of this number though, and clarifies he's in an unusual position where he can afford to spend this amount of money. 'Most of you know I have a normal 9-5 type job, I also own my own business,' he said in the clip. 'And I do make a little bit of money off of doing these YouTube videos, so my situation is probably a lot different to most people who watch and play the game.' Despite his financial position though, 2KOG warned others from investing this amount of money into a game. 'It's absolutely not worth it,' he added. 'Even if I was breaking even [through YouTube videos], that's still a lot of resources that were put into this.' Incredibly, despite spending over £24,000, he still doesn't have all the cards available in NBA 2K25 , due to the amount of duplicates he's pulled from packs. More Trending 'I should have pretty much every card in the game, and I don't,' he added. 'And all I can do is sit here and think about how much money I've wasted. 'I did create a [YouTube] channel but it paid me a tenth of what I spent. So there's no way anyone can tell me it was worth it.' 2KOG's financial woes have since gone viral on X. At the time of writing, 2KOG's YouTube channel dedicated to NBA 2K25, which he started a year ago, has 3,5000 subscribers. If you need another reason why spending this amount of money on NBA 2K is a waste of time, none of these purchases will carry over to the series' next instalment, NBA 2K26, which is set to come out on September 6, 2025. Instead, they'll all have to be bought again for another £24K+. Email gamecentral@ leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter. Halle Berry's ex-husband reveals 'annoying' reason he left her

David Justice is facing backlash after revealing the reason why his marriage to Halle Berry didn't work out. The former professional baseball player, 59, spoke out on the All the Smoke podcast about his marriage to the actress, 58, from 1993 to 1997. 'She asked me to marry her after knowing me for five months,' he reflected. 'I don't know if my heart was really into it. But I didn't want to make her feel bad and say no. I was just in the moment, it caught me off-guard. We're getting along, we're vibing, again, we're only five months in, we're still in the honeymoon stage.' He then shared that he ultimately decided to leave Berry because she didn;t cook and clean like his mother did, a comment that his earned disbelief and outrage online. He said: 'I'm looking at my mom, I'm a Midwest guy. So in my mind, I'm thinking a wife at that time should cook, clean, and I'm thinking OK, if we have kids, is this the woman I want to have kids with and build a family with? And at that time, as a young guy, she don't cook, don't clean, don't really seem like motherly.' He continued, saying: 'Eventually, I realize this isn't the person I wanted to spend my life with.' X user @macaiyla wrote: 'Men are so annoying ffs its never enough. You get a hard working woman and shes not motherly enough for you. You get a woman who stays at home and they're useless golddiggers. There is no winning with this gender its like talking to a wall.' @nwajiohaphilip agreed: 'Sounds like he was looking for a housekeeper, not a partner.' @_mstrdom posted: 'Men are so annoying. They're looking for their mother. We're in 2025.' But some people defended the regressive take, with X user @petaitoksf1 writing: 'Well that's his expectation and if she ain't what he's looking for then that explains why he's the ex. Neither is wrong though.' @AMB0915 agreed: 'You're allowed to have expectations, preferences etc but let that be known to the person you're going to marry prior. And they don't have to meet them if they don't want to. Glad Halle berry is happy with someone else because services exist for the above.' Continuing to reflect on the fallout after the end of his marriage to Berry, Justice said: 'It wasn't really a lot of negative attention until I decided to leave her in 1996.' Despite Berry's dissimilarities to his mother, Justice thinks the marriage could have been saved: 'Honestly, we probably could have made it, if I knew about therapy,' he said. He continued: 'It's just that I, because I was young, had only been in honestly one real relationship before her. My knowledge and my understanding and my wisdom around relationships just wasn't vast.' Famously, Berry told People in 1996 that an ex-boyfriend punctured her eardrum while hitting her. At the time, many believed she was referring to Justice, something he always denied. While Berry eventually set the record straight and publicly confirmed it wasn't Justice, he resent she didn't do it sooner, saying: 'She let the world think it was me. I thought she was dead wrong for that.' Still, Justice acknowledged he could have been more empathetic when splitting from Berry. He said: 'I look back on that situation, and I'm like, that girl really did love me. And I can see why she would be so mad at me. Because imagine if you really love somebody and they tell you they want to break up, and there's nothing you can say to get them back. That had to have been tough on her. More Trending Today, Berry shares her life with musician Van Hunt, her long-term partner. Her romantic history includes two high-profile marriages to French actor Olivier Martinez from 2013 to 2016, and to singer Eric Benét between 2001 and 2005. She is also a devoted mother of two: 17-year-old Nahla, whom she co-parents with ex-partner Gabriel Aubry, and 11-year-old Maceo, her son with Martinez. View More » Justice, meanwhile, has built a steady family life far from the headlines. He has been married to his wife, Rebecca, for 24 years, and together they are raising two children. Got a story?
