Celtic see clearer Champions League play-off picture as five projected rivals revealed
Celtic fans are nervously awaiting next week's Champions League play-off draw as the club continues to drag its heels in the transfer market.
The Hoops are just two games away from securing a £40million ticket to the revamped league phase for the fourth consecutive year.
Brendan Rodgers ' side already know they'll be seeded, meaning they'll avoid the likes of Bodo/Glimt, FC Copenhagen, Red Star Belgrade and Ferencvaros.
But the Parkhead giants will still be wary of some tricky potential opponents with proven European pedigree.
Two of the five unseeded teams have already been confirmed, with three slots still up for grabs before the draw is made on Monday, August 4.
Respected outlet Football Rankings have done the maths with their projected seedings ahead of the play-off showdown.
Maccabi Tel Aviv (Israel)
This is a draw Celtic 's PR machine could do without. The Hoops fanbase's unflinching support for Palestine has gone global in recent years. And in previous Champions League clashes, the Green Brigade have defied orders from their own board and UEFA by transforming Parkhead into a sea of Palestine flags in a show of solidarity with the people of Gaza, who are suffering genocide at the hands of Israel. This would be a fixture that goes far beyond football.
As it stands, Maccabi are tied 1-1 with Pafos FC ahead of Wednesday's second-round return leg in Israel. If, as expected, they go through, they'll likely face FC Dynamo Kyiv in the next round after the Ukrainians thumped Hamrun 3-0 away from home.
Slovan Bratislava (Slovakia)
Rodgers' men would head into this tie with no fear after demolishing the Slovakians 5-1 at Celtic Park last season.
Slovan are on course to sail through into the third round as they boast a 4-0 lead over Bosnian minnows Zrinjski. They'll take on the winners of KuPS Kuopio vs FC Kairat Almaty. Finnish side KuPS are 2-0 up ahead of this week's return leg in Kazakhstan.
Basel (Switzerland)
How does a reunion with Albian Ajeti sound? Like Celtic, the champions of Switzerland can put their feet up until the playoffs having avoided the previous qualifiers. It's a banana skin the Hoops would rather avoid and arguably the toughest team they could be paired with.
There's history between the pair too. Basel famously dumped Martin O'Neill's side out of the Champions League in 2002, the same season the Hoops went all the way to the UEFA Cup Final.
Sturm Graz (Austria)
They might not be a household name, but Sturm Graz are not to be underestimated. The Austrians stunned RB Salzburg to win the league last season and boast young Scotland cap Max Johnston in their ranks. Like Celtic and Basel, they're already safely through to the play-off round.
FCSB (Romania)
The Romanian champions slumped to a shock defeat away to Shkendija and are bidding to overturn a 1-0 deficit in Bucharest. If they do, a clash with Qarabag awaits — with the Azerbaijani outfit in cruise control after hammering Shelbourne 3-0 in Dublin.

Celtic hero Scott Brown's ruthless flag day Kris Boyd troll
The pair were in the studio at Parkhead covering the Scottish Premiership champions' first competitive fixture of the new season. Celtic eventually won the game 1-0 thanks to Luke McCowan's late strike. Before the match, the league flag was unfurled by club legend Paul McStay. Read more: Brown was asked in the build-up about his experiences of flag day. He couldn't resist a dig at Boyd in his answer: "It's amazing because you know all that hard work from the season before has to start all over again," said the current Ayr United boss. "It's one of those days, it's great for the fans, it's great for everyone to come together." "Boydy's not used to this, obviously in a long, long time," Brown then joked. "He's delighted to be here. We've had a real good chat about how good this place is and how much it means to you, haven't we?" 🗣️ 'What does flag day mean for a player?' 😬 '[Kris] Boyd isn't used to it. It's been a long, long time' Scott Brown on what today will mean for Falkirk & Celtic, as both sides will unfurl their title-winning flags ⬇️ — Sky Sports Scotland (@ScotlandSky) August 3, 2025 Boyd then replied: "It's nice to see you've changed, you can talk some rubbish, wow." With their, albeit narrow, victory on Sunday, Celtic moved two points clear of city rivals Rangers on the opening weekend of the new season. Next up, Brendan Rodgers takes his team to face Aberdeen at Pittodrie on Sunday.

What Celtic did on flag day that St Mirren boss had never seen before
It was far from a classic on the opening weekend of the Scottish Premiership season at Parkhead as Luke McCowan's late deflected strike proved the difference between the sides. Celtic initially thought they took the lead midway through the second half through captain Callum McGregor, although he was adjudged to have handled the ball in the build-up. Read more: They eventually got their winner three minutes from time, and in the remaining eight, including stoppages, they looked to run down the clock. St Mirren boss Robinson says he'd never seen the like from a Celtic team at Parkhead: "We're disappointed to lose in that manner, a deflected goal," he said [@saintmirrenfc on X]. "We did so much good work, some fantastic teamwork in terms of our pressing and our energy. So I can't ask for anymore in that. "They score a deflected goal, Celtic are wasting time in the last five minutes, which I've not seen before at Celtic Park. So that tells you that we were still very much a threat to them." St Mirren welcome Motherwell to Paisley this weekend for their second league game of the season, meanwhile Celtic travel to face Aberdeen at Pittodrie.

Alan Shearer claims Man Utd and Newcastle are making huge transfer 'gamble'
Alan Shearer believes Manchester United and his beloved Newcastle United are making significant 'gambles' in their pursuit of Benjamin Sesko. Newcastle's opening bid for the Slovenia striker, worth around £70m, was rejected by Bundesliga club RB Leipzig. Manchester United are yet to make a formal offer for Sesko but have indicated to Leipzig that they are ready to match Newcastle's bid. Ruben Amorim is keen to welcome an elite striker to Old Trafford this summer following Rasmus Hojlund's struggles last season. Amorim hoped to reunite with his former Sporting star Viktor Gyokeres but the Sweden international rejected the Red Devils in favour of a move to Arsenal. Newcastle, meanwhile, are desperately searching for a new striker after Alexander Isak dropped a transfer bombshell by asking to leave St James' Park. Premier League champions Liverpool are interested in signing Isak and saw an opening offer worth £110m rejected by Newcastle. England legend Shearer has described Sesko as a 'talent' but says it would be a 'gamble' and a 'risk' to sign him this summer given the level of improvement needed in his game. Discussing Manchester United and Newcastle United's interest in Sesko, Shearer said on The Rest is Football podcast: 'With Sesko, I know he's young, but that would be a gamble because you're going to have to pay a decent sized fee. 'I saw him two or three times in the Champions League last season and there's definitely room for improvement. 'Yes, there's certainly a talent there but there's a lot improvement that can be made as well. You're bringing someone who's unknown into the Premier League and that's always a bit of a risk.' Newcastle hero Shearer has branded the club's transfer window 'disastrous' but refused to criticise Isak for trying to leave. Isak was one of the best strikers in Europe last season, scoring 23 goals in the Premier League and helping Newcastle win the Carabao Cup and qualify for the Champions League. It was quite a tough season for Leipzig, which forced them to change coach after a disappointing Champions League campaign. They've been struggling, which reflects on his output, but he was still one of their best and most consistent players. Sesko's strengths are certainly his physicality and speed – he's great at making dangerous runs in behind defences, but he's also a very clinical and instinctive finisher, especially when the ball drops to him in the area. His work rate is good and he's a willing runner off the ball as well. His hold-up play is quite strong, but I think his link-up play is a side of his game that he can still improve. It's not that he's bad at that side of the game, but compared to someone like Kai Havertz, he's not at that level. In particular, his passing will need to get a lot better. But during his young career, he's shown he can take those steps forward. His mentality is definitely a strength – he's a player who wants to learn and wants to improve so in that sense he will be a quick learner. Rune Gjerulff, German football expert and editor of Bulinews The 25-year-old has left it late in the transfer window to push for a move, leaving Newcastle scrambling around for replacements. 'Up to now it's been a disastrous window for Newcastle,' Shearer added. 'It was meant to be the time we kicked on with heavy investment and hopefully go to another level. It's been anything but that to be honest. 'They've missed out on several first-choice targets, so up to now it's been really poor. Their transfer window has been a mess. 'I thought Isak might have stayed for another season and then this would have happened next summer. But it is what it is. 'If he can't be persuaded to stay then you take the money and you just say, 'thanks for the great memories, off you go.' More Trending Asked whether he was 'angry' at Isak following his decision to leave St James' Park, Shearer said: 'It's football. 'I'm not angry at all at him, I understand how football works and know what happens in the game. I understand his mentality, even if I don't have to like it. 'Obviously Liverpool have been into him and his agent but I just thought this might have happened next year. 'If he really wants to go, you take big money for him and get other players in and you move on.' For more stories like this, check our sport page.
