IIT Mandi, PU to collaborate on mental wellbeing
"We set up a dedicated centre for Indian knowledge systems and mental health. Through this collaboration, IIT Mandi and PU will work together to deepen research and promote practices rooted in Indian traditions for better mental wellbeing," said Professor Laxmidhar Behera, director of IIT Mandi.
Behera, along with renowned scientists including Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awardee Dr Vijay Bhatkar, widely known as the architect of India's national initiative in supercomputing, was in the city to attend BLAIM 2025, an international conference on mindfulness, behavioural science, legal innovation, and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.
"In the Indian knowledge system, the mind holds a central place in achieving holistic health. Ayurveda and Vedic texts speak of three forms of energy — physical, mental and spiritual — that reside within us. We aim to explore and balance these energies through a scientific lens," said Behera.
"We are also setting up a brain and behaviour lab at PU," said Dr Mohammad Nami, a cognitive neuroscientist and director of BrainHub, UAE, who is associated with Canadian University Dubai.
"This lab will be a hub for hands-on neuroscience research, brain profiling, and studies on cognitive functions. Students will be directly involved in research activities, making this a truly immersive learning experience," he said.

Industry-Academia collaboration key to growth
Sri City: The Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Sri City celebrated a dual milestone on Saturday as it hosted its 9th batch convocation ceremony – conferring degrees on the Class of 2025 and marking a decade of academic excellence. Delivering the convocation address, Chief Guest Dr G Satheesh Reddy, former Chairman of DRDO and Honorary Advisor (Aerospace & Defence) to the Government of Andhra Pradesh, called on the institute to serve as a national anchor for technology development by bridging academic research and real-world innovation. 'I see IIIT Sri City as a unique institute embedded in a thriving industrial hub. You must lead with innovation, research, and entrepreneurship to help build a 'Viksit Bharat,' Dr Reddy said. Stressing the need for deeper R&D collaboration between academia and industry, he noted the growing establishment of advanced testing facilities supported by national agencies. However, he added that Indian industries must themselves step up to invest in design and development to remain globally competitive. Applauding IIIT's initiatives, he remarked, 'Institutes like IIIT must anchor technology development by bridging knowledge and application — a true engine of national growth.' The convocation was presided over by Dr Sridhar Vembu, Founder of Zoho Corporation and Chairman of the IIIT Sri City Board of Governors, who lauded the institute's steady growth and urged graduates to embrace a life of purpose and societal contribution. Eating For Immunity: Traditional Indian Foods That Heal From Within
Small daily choices, grounded in tradition and supported by science and supplemented when needed under medical advice are the way to nourish it from within In an era of pills and powders, our traditional Indian diets remind us that true immunity is built not bought. 'As both a physician and wellness coach, I find increasing resonance between what modern science proves and what our grandmothers always knew," says Dr. Aparna Santhanam, Dermatologist & Holistic Wellness Coach. Take haldi doodh, for example. Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, has been shown to modulate immune responses and reduce systemic inflammation (Journal of Clinical Immunology, 2018). When paired with black pepper which enhances its absorption by up to 2000% (Planta Medica, 1998) it becomes a potent daily shield. Kadha, that humble brew of tulsi, ginger, cinnamon, and black pepper, is not just folklore. Tulsi has demonstrated immunomodulatory effects, and ginger is known for its antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties (Frontiers in Pharmacology, 2020). A warm cup daily during seasonal transitions can truly help you stay well. 'Gut health is central to immunity. Studies now affirm that fermented foods like curd, idli, and kanji improve gut microbiota diversity by directly influencing immune function (Cell, 2021). A spoon of homemade pickle or fermented rice adds even more probiotic richness," shares Dr Santhanam. But beyond what we eat, how we eat matters too. Warm, fresh meals eaten mindfully—with seasonal rhythm, cultural context, and locally sourced ingredients—play a critical role in building and maintaining immunity. At the end of the day, it's important to understand that immunity isn't built in a day or by simply popping a pill. Small daily choices, grounded in tradition and supported by science and supplemented when needed under medical advice are the way to nourish it from within, one wholesome meal and one steady habit at a time. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
