‘Rarely been so angry': Bayern boss Kompany seethes over Musiala injury

TimesLIVEa day ago
Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany said he was furious after Jamal Musiala sustained a horrific injury during the first half of their Club World Cup quarterfinal defeat by Paris St Germain in Atlanta on Saturday.
The 22-year-old Germany international was injured in added time before the break after a collision in PSG's penalty area.
As Musiala challenged defender William Pacho for the ball, goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma inadvertently rolled over Musiala's left ankle, twisting it at an alarming angle and leaving him lying in agony on the pitch.
'I've rarely been so angry at halftime, not against my players. There's many things in life that are important, much more important than this. But in the end, for these guys it's their life,' Kompany told reporters after the 2-0 loss.
Wishing him a speedy recovery ❤️‍🩹 pic.twitter.com/pOmaM4lGmq

'And someone like Jamal lives for this and he came back from a setback. And then it happens in the way it happens and you feel powerless...
'When I'm sat here next to you now, the thing that gets my blood still boiling at the moment is not the result. I understand this is football. But it's the fact that it happened to someone who enjoys the game so much is also very important for us.'
Bayern's medical team rushed on to the pitch as Donnarumma, visibly shaken, dropped to the ground with his hands on his head in disbelief at the severity of the injury.
Players from both teams formed a circle around Musiala who was carried off the field on a stretcher. The German daily Bild reported he could be sidelined for up to five months.
Bayern goalkeeper and captain Manuel Neuer said Donnarumma's dive was 'risky' and that he had spoken to his Italian counterpart after the incident.
'You just accept that your opponent might get injured. It could even be a teammate,' he added.
'So I went over to him and said: 'Don't you want — because it was half time anyway — don't you want to go over there? Jamal is lying there, he'll probably stay in the hospital, he has a serious injury, and I think it's only right to go over there out of respect and wish him well and just say a little sorry.'
'After that, he went over to Jamal... Fairness is always important, and I would have reacted differently.'
After the match, Donnarumma posted on Instagram: 'All my prayers and well wishes are with you Jamal.'

South African racing driver Jordan Pepper wins his first German DTM race

Jordan Pepper won his first DTM race, behind the wheel of a Lamborghini Huracan. Image: Jordan Pepper via Instagram South Africa has another rising star in the world of German Touring Car racing, with Jordan Pepper scooping his first DTM victory over the weekend. The 28-year-old became the second South African to achieve success in the German racing series in just three years, with compatriot Sheldon van der Linde having won the DTM series in 2022. Pepper, who competes in a TGI Team Lamborghini Huracan Evo2, currently lies third in the 2025 DTM Championship, following his flag-to-flag victory at the Norisring on Saturday, which was the seventh race of the season. He was also the fastest in practice and qualifying. Jordan Pepper: a rising DTM star. Image: Supplied "What an unbelievably emotional moment for me. I am incredibly proud and still cannot really believe it. The final laps seemed to last forever. However, I gave it my all and remained focussed right through to the finish," a delighted Pepper said after the event. He surged ahead of the field, while Thomas Preining (Porsche 911) and Maro Engel (Mercedes AMG GT) fought for their eventual second and third places, aided by a collision that put second-placed Nicki Thiim (Lamborghini) out of contention. Pepper is no stranger to international racing success behind the wheel of some prestigious machinery. In 2020, he won the Bathurst 12-hour as a Bentley works driver, playing a pivotal role in the British marque's success in the GT3 era, which sadly ended with the pandemic. However, after joining Lamborghini in 2021, Pepper went on to dominate the GTWC America championship, alongside fellow factory driver Andrea Caldarelli. Jordan Pepper is the son of South African touring car driver Iain Pepper and brother of Tasmin Pepper, who competed in the former W-Series, a global championship for female drivers. He started karting at a young age, and after joining the VW Polo Cup in 2012, Pepper won the 'Rookie of the Year' award after finishing third in the championship. But there were bigger things ahead, and in 2015, Pepper moved overseas to race for the ABT Sportsline Audi team in the ADAC GT Series. IOL Motoring

Arsenal sign Spain midfielder Zubimendi

"This is a huge moment in my career," said the defensive midfielder. Arsenal on Sunday announced the signing of midfielder and Euro 2024 winner Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad in a deal reportedly worth around £55 million ($75 million). ALSO READ: Youthful Chelsea ready for Thiago Silva reunion at Club World Cup 'This is a huge moment in my career,' said the defensive midfielder, who is understood to have put pen to paper on a five-year deal. 'It's the move I was looking for and one I wanted to make. As soon as you set foot here, you realise how big this club and this team are. 'I set my sights on Arsenal because their style of play is a good fit for me. They have shown their potential recently and the best is yet to come.' The Athletic reported that Arsenal paid above Zubimendi's 60 million euro ($71 million, £51 million) buyout clause in order to spread the cost of the fee over a number of installments. Zubimendi, 26, made 236 appearances in all competitions for Sociedad after graduating from the club's academy and has played 19 times for Spain. He will reinforce manager Mikel Arteta's midfield options after the departures of Thomas Partey and Jorginho. Zubimendi's arrival paves the way for Arsenal's record signing Declan Rice to play a more attacking midfield role alongside captain Martin Odegaard. 'Martin is a player who will bring a huge amount of quality and football intelligence to our team,' said Arteta. 'He will fit in really well and he has all the attributes to be a key player for us.' Zubimendi is Arsenal's second signing of the summer transfer window after goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga joined from Chelsea. The Gunners are also expected to complete the signing of midfielder Christian Norgaard from Brentford. Arsenal finished second in the Premier League last season for a third straight year and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League but ultimately ended up without a trophy for a fifth consecutive season. Attention will now turn to the forward line as the Gunners try to see off champions Liverpool and Manchester City and claim a first league title since 2003/04. Arsenal have also been linked with a move for Chelsea's Noni Madueke.

Kaizer Chiefs captain Yusuf Maart to SV Ried latest revealed

Kaizer Chiefs captain Yusuf Maart is heading to Europe, with newly promoted Austrian Bundesliga side SV Ried 1912 securing his signature. The midfield maestro will reunite with former Stellenbosch FC winger Antonio van Wyk at the ambitious Austrian outfit. Amakhosi left Maart behind as the squad travelled to the Netherlands for their pre-season camp, following a reported agreement between Chiefs and Ried. Despite the club recently exercising a two-year extension on his contract, the offer from SV Ried proved too good to turn down. SV Ried, also known as SV Guntamatic Ried for sponsorship purposes, earned promotion to Austria's top flight after a successful 2024/2025 campaign in the second tier. Van Wyk played a crucial role in that campaign and now welcomes another South African talent to the fold. The club also boasts South African links in the technical department. Moritz Kossmann, a former coach at Ubuntu Academy and Cape Town City's Diski Challenge team, now serves as Ried's assistant coach and chief analyst. Kossmann moved to Europe in 2024 and has played a pivotal role in integrating South African talent into the Austrian system. SV Ried have already begun their pre-season preparations and are pushing to have Maart available in time for their upcoming friendly. The club hopes to field him in a crucial match against German third-tier outfit Energie Cottbus at the Innviertel Arena on Friday, 18 July. Ried's Bundesliga journey begins with a daunting fixture against RB Salzburg on Saturday, 2 August. The coaching staff view Maart as a key addition to strengthen their midfield ahead of the season. 'I think this change is quite possible. Ried is looking for a strong player for the centre midfield. Will let you know when I have more information but apparently he left the airport just after 6pm yesterday,' said a source close to the deal. Yusuf Maart's move marks another significant step for South African players breaking into European football. With familiar faces around him and a new challenge ahead, all eyes will be on Maart as he looks to make his mark in the Austrian Bundesliga. Will the Kaizer Chiefs star make an impact in Austria?
