NCW takes cognisance of Tamil Nadu bride's suicide, seeks report in 72 hours
NCW Chairperson, Vijaya Rahatkar, wrote to the Director General of Police (DGP), Tamil Nadu, asking for a prompt and fair investigation under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.
In an official statement, the Commission said, 'Such incidents are a grave violation of women's rights and demand urgent, exemplary action.'
The NCW also directed the Tamil Nadu Police to submit a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR) within 72 hours.
Further investigation into the incident is underway.
Meanwhile in a separate case, NCW on Saturday took suo moto cognisance regarding the alleged sexual harassment of an intern at IIT Madras campus, urging Tamil Nadu's Director General of Police for a fair and time-bound investigation and directing the authorities to ensure that psychological support is given to the victim.
The accused, Roushan Kumar (22), was arrested by Chennai police on June 27 for allegedly harassing the woman by using a stick and pulling her hair, according to officials.
Releasing a statement on X (formerly Twitter), NCW said, "National Commission for Women has taken suo moto cognizance of a media report regarding the sexual harassment of a 20-year-old woman intern at IIT-Madras by a food court employee on campus."
Calling for a fair and time-bound investigation along with ensuring psychological support to the victim, the statement added, "Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the DGP, Tamil Nadu, calling for a fair and time-bound investigation under relevant provisions of BNS, 2023. NCW has also directed the authorities to ensure it."
All India Students' Federation also announced a protest, calling for ensuring women safety in the campus.
According to officials, on the night of June 26, around 9.20 PM, the accused used a stick and pulled the woman's hair, according to the complainant. The accused is working in the campus's Isthara food court. Based on the complaint and evidence collected, the accused was arrested, officials said.

Ghaziabad: A 30-year-old kanwar pilgrim who was critically injured after an ambulance crashed into a group of devotees returning from Haridwar on two-wheelers near Kadrabad village last week succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, taking the total death toll in the incident to four. Police said Akash and his friends, Anshul Awasthi (25) and Rahul Chaubey (23), all residents of Bhangel in Noida, were returning from Haridwar with Ganga water when Akash, who was driving, allegedly dozed off near the Bhojpur toll plaza. "They were speeding and the impact of the crash threw all three several metres away," said ACP (Modinagar) Gyan Prakash Rai. Commuters alerted police, and the trio was rushed to a hospital in Meerut. Akash succumbed during treatment on Monday. The other two remain in critical condition. No complaint has been filed so far and the autopsy report is awaited.

FIR against Jhalawar school staff, management
Kota: In response to widespread public outcry and demands for accountability, an FIR has been registered against the headmaster and four teachers from the Govt Upper Primary School in Piplodi where seven children perished and 21 others were injured when a classroom wall and roof collapsed Friday. "On a report by families of victims and Piplodi villagers, a case has been registered against the govt school's teachers and management for negligence and investigation is underway," Jhalawar SP Amit Kumar told TOI. "No teacher or management person has been named in the report," Kumar said, adding that no one has been detained or arrested as probe was underway. SHO Vijendra Singh of Dangipura police station (Jhalawar) confirmed having formally registered a case of death by negligence under BNS sections 106 and 215 against unnamed persons and a probe being initiated into the matter. School headmaster Meena Garg refuted allegations against her and told police that she had not noticed any signs of structural weakness in the building prior to the tragedy. Survivor students, however, reported a different narrative, claiming that they had observed falling pebbles in the classroom Friday morning and had alerted their teachers, who instructed them to remain seated quietly. In an effort to address the situation, the district collector has established a five-member committee, led by the chief executive officer of Zila Parishad, to investigate the incident further. 2 workers die in sewer, FIR lodged
Lucknow: Two sanitation workers died and one was critically injured after they were allegedly made to enter a sewer for cleaning without protective gear at Mahamaya Allopathic Medical College in Saddarpur of Ambedkar Nagar district. The incident occurred on July 24, while an FIR was registered on Saturday evening following a complaint by Pooja Devi, wife of deceased worker Maniram Lal. In her complaint, she alleged Maniram Lal, Dev Anand and Surendra Kumar were asked to clean a sewer chamber on the medical college premises without being provided the safety gear and equipment such as oxygen cylinders, safety harnesses, or protective suits on July 24. The task was allegedly assigned by Karan Kumar, a senior clerk at the college, through Aditya Kumar, a local contractor. Surendra told police they were ordered to enter the sewer without any protective apparatus, which led to the incident. Maniram Lal and Dev Anand hailed from Tanda while Surendra belongs to Ambedkar Nagar district. Ambedkar Nagar SP Keshav Kumar told TOI that an FIR has been registered against Karan Kumar and Aditya Kumar under sections BNS 106 (causing death by negligent act) and 125B (acts endangering human life) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
