Malaysia achieves 98.82pct internet coverage in populated areas
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said in terms of 5G coverage, Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) has completed a total of 7,489 transmitter sites, providing 82.4 per cent coverage in populated areas nationwide.
"Meanwhile, the number of subscriptions has exceeded 28 million, with the 5G mobile broadband penetration rate per 100 residents at 82.7 per cent.
"The government, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, remains committed to supporting the aspiration to bridge the digital divide and expand internet coverage, including 5G services nationwide, particularly in rural areas," he said.
Fahmi was responding to Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (PN-Tanjong Karang) who enquired about the latest progress and details on the government's 5G rollout programme, as well as strategies to further expand coverage into rural areas.
Regarding the second 5G network, Fahmi said the rollout, operated by U Mobile, commenced operations on July 14 with a total of 1,232 sites upgraded to 5G coverage.
"Meanwhile, the implementation of National Digital Network Plan (Jendela) 1 is expected to be fully completed by the end of 2025, while plans for Jendela 2 are being finalised and will be announced by MCMC in the fourth quarter of 2025.
"This requires assessment and consideration of appropriate fit-for-purpose service delivery methods, as well as the capacity of the Universal Service Provision (USP) Fund to finance the capital and operational expenditure of the project. The list of project locations is currently being identified.
"The types of service delivery solutions under consideration at this planning stage are expected to include the construction of new towers and the provision of internet services using satellite technology," he said.

Malaysia's RM9.5 billion Boeing purchase won't raise debt or deficit
KUALA LUMPUR: The government has assured that the RM9.5 billion Boeing aircraft purchase will not increase national debt or widen the fiscal deficit. Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying stated the acquisition is part of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). 'At present, everything is within our expectations,' she said during a Dewan Rakyat session. She was responding to Pasir Puteh MP Datuk Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh, who questioned debt control measures after the US deal. Nik Muhammad had also asked why debt remains high despite geopolitical risks. Lim explained that debt rises to fund development expenditures (DE) amid fiscal deficits. 'This financing will directly increase the government's debt level as long as deficits persist,' she said. She clarified DE is funded through multiple sources, including taxes and non-tax revenue, not just borrowing. Lim confirmed government borrowings stay within legal limits, with debt at 62.7% of GDP as of June 2025. Offshore borrowings of RM22.8 billion remain below the RM35 billion cap under Act 403. Malaysian Treasury Bills, at RM2 billion, are also within the RM10 billion limit set by Act 188. - Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's chairmanship of Asean this year has delivered key milestones that reinforce the bloc's role as a credible, principled platform for navigating regional challenges, says Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. The Foreign Minister said the upcoming Asean Summit in October, alongside the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Summit, will further elevate Malaysia's profile as a respected hub for diplomacy and dialogue. 'With only four months left in our chairmanship, Malaysia remains committed to sustaining this positive momentum, particularly in ensuring the success of the 47th Asean Summit and related meetings,' he told the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (Aug 19). Mohamad said Malaysia's achievements as chair include the launch of the Asean Community Vision 2045, the signing of the Kuala Lumpur Declaration, and the historic admission of Timor-Leste as the bloc's 11th member. Under Malaysia's leadership, Asean maintained the Five-Point Consensus as the main framework for addressing the Myanmar crisis, while pushing for an extended ceasefire and engaging with all stakeholders to support peace efforts. He added that Malaysia led humanitarian missions to Myanmar following the recent earthquake, secured wider international participation in the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC), and advanced Asean economic integration through agreements such as the upgraded Asean Trade in Goods Agreement and the Asean Digital Economy Framework. He said Cyprus is expected to sign the TAC during the upcoming summit, following Algeria and Uruguay's accession, bringing total signatories to 57. Mohamad also highlighted Malaysia's efforts in coordinating the establishment of an Interim Observer Team comprising defence advisers from Asean member states to monitor compliance with the ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia. He said this role highlights Malaysia's credibility as a neutral and trusted mediator in regional conflicts. 'Malaysia also played a pivotal role in expanding Asean's external engagement, including with the Gulf Cooperation Council and China, and recently facilitated dialogue between Thailand and Cambodia over their border conflict,' he said.
