India's Squad For Women's ODI World Cup 2025: Harmanpreet Kaur To Lead, Shafali Verma Snubbed

NDTV6 hours ago
Harmanpreet Kaur is set to lead India for the first time in the ICC Women's ODI World Cup with Smriti Mandhana as her deputy, as the hosts unveiled a strong 15-member squad for the upcoming edition of the marquee event, commencing on September 30. Opener Shafali Verma is a notable omission from the squad, while pace spearhead Renuka Thakur returns to the 15-member side after a long injury layoff. In Pooja Vastrakar's absence from the side due to a long-standing stress injury, the team management found an able back-up in the form of Amanjot Kaur. "Amanjot (Kaur) is currently with the India A team in Australia, and she will be in the World Cup squad," said skipper Harmanpreet in the press conference at BCCI headquarters.
The allrounder was used as the second seamer during the T20I leg of the England tour, which India won 3-2. In that series, apart from bowling seam-ups and picking three wickets across 13 overs, Amanjot also struck an incredible, match-winning 63 not out to shore up a floundering innings.
Heading into the mega event, Harmanpreet and Co. are buoyed by a tri-series win in Sri Lanka (also involving South Africa) and a historic series win in England.
India will head into this year's tournament on home soil as one of the favourites to claim the famous trophy, though the likes of seven-time champions Australia and four-time winners England will be standing in their way as India attempt to clinch their maiden World Cup title.
Women in Blue will be hoping to go one step further at this year's tournament than they did in 2017, when they made it to their second Women's Cricket World Cup Final, missing out narrowly to England in a thrilling finish at Lord's.
India will kickstart their campaign against Sri Lanka at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on September 30.
India squad for Women's ODI World Cup: Harmanpreet Kaur (C), Smriti Mandhana (VC), Pratika Rawal, Harleen Deol, Jemimah Rodrigues, Richa Ghosh, Yastika Bhatia, Renuka Singh Thakur, Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana, Sree Charani, Radha Yadav, Amanjot Kaur, Arundhati Reddy, Kranti Gaud.

Cant Fathom Or Understand What Reason...: Ex-India Assistant Coach Reacts To Shreyas Iyers Exclusion From Asia Cup Squad

Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar could not fathom the fact that India excluded Shreyas Iyer from the Asia Cup squad, announced at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai on Tuesday. The selectors sprung a major surprise by including Test team captain Shubman Gill in the squad despite him missing the last few T20I matches, chief selector Ajiot Agarkar addressed the decision to leave Iyer out as ' no fault of his. Nor is it ours.' "I can't fathom or understand what reason could justify Shreyas Iyer not being part of the 20-member squad. I'm not even talking about the final 15, but the 20 itself, which sends a clear message that Shreyas Iyer is not in the selectors' scheme of things, at least from a T20 perspective,' said Nayar to JioHotstar. Iyer had scored 604 runs at a strike rate of 175 in IPL 2025 and led the Punjab Kings to the final in Ahmedabad, but failed to find a place in the 15. Gill's recall comes on the back of a strong IPL 2025 campaign for Gujarat Titans, where he led the team into the playoffs and amassed 650 runs in 15 innings at an average of 50 and a strike rate of 155.87. He also has an impressive T20I record, scoring 578 runs in 21 matches at an average of 30.42 and a strike rate of 139.27, with one century and three fifties. Notably, Gill is among the few Indians to have centuries in all three international formats. Former India batter Aakash Chopra believes Gill's inclusion 'seals the fate' of wicket-keeper batter Sanju Samson in the team, adding he is likely to be pushed out of the playing XI now. "India seems to be moving in the direction of an all-format captain. With Shubman Gill's return, Sanju Samson's fate has more or less been sealed; he won't feature in the playing XI now. You won't drop Tilak Varma or Hardik Pandya, which means Samson sits out, and Jitesh Sharma will likely get the nod again. One thing is very clear from this selection: the batting slots have been prioritized over personalities. With Gill coming in as vice-captain, he will definitely play and open the batting. This essentially pushes Sanju Samson out of the XI,' said Chopra to JioHotstar.

New Delhi: Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad surprised his fans this time. Playing for Maharashtra against Chhattisgarh in the Bucchi Babu tournament, Gaikwad played the role of a bowler for the first time and took important wickets for his team. Gaikwad, who was out of action for most of IPL 2025 due to injury, appeared in full fitness and rhythm in this match. The specialty of this match was that Prithvi Shaw, who was out of Indian cricket for a long time, played wearing the Maharashtra jersey for the first time after leaving Mumbai. Captain got the gift of success. In this match, Chhattisgarh batsmen Shashank Tiwari and Saurabh Majumdar were building an important partnership for the last wicket. When the Maharashtra team was struggling to break this partnership, captain Ankit Bawne handed the ball to Ruturaj Gaikwad. Gaikwad's brilliant bowling Gaikwad gave a single on the first ball and Majumdar hit a big six on the second ball. But after this, Majumdar got caught in Gaikwad's spin. Gaikwad himself took the catch at the non-striker's end and impressed everyone with his bowling.
