Children's Museum of Green Bay promotes healthy choices through new ‘Taste of Summer' event
GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – In a brand new event, the Children's Museum of Green Bay invited families to celebrate the beginning of the summer while promoting healthy choicemaking.
The Taste of Summer event is a new event that started at 3 p.m., running until 7 p.m., celebrating the fun of summer with healthy decisions at the forefront.
'We believe children learn best through play, and Taste of Summer builds on that mission by offering interactive, educational and hands-on experiences beyond our regular exhibits,' Executive Director Toni Burnette said via a release.

The event included free healthy food with outdoor activities, from a bubble party, water exploration, face painting and oversized games.
Museum exhibits were also open for attendees to enjoy, allowing families the opportunity to still get the true experience of the attraction.

'Scarecrow' (1973) Blu-Ray Review - Gene Hackman & Al Pacino Bring Emotional Honesty To Road Movie
Just out of jail after serving time on an assault rap, Max (Gene Hackman) is headed for Pittsburgh to open a deluxe car wash. Back from five years at sea, Lion (Al Pacino) wants to hit Detroit and visit the child he's never seen. The dreams may not be glorious but you'll want Max and Lion to fulfill them, because Scarecrow, cowinner of the 1973 Cannes Film Festival Grand Prize, has a heart as big as its cross-country journey. Its hard-luck drifters drift permanently into our souls. This is due to teamwork of a high order: The moving performances of Hackman and Pacino, the sensitive direction of Jerry Schatzberg and the glowing landscape cinematography of Vilmos Zsigmond. Hit the road with these two. You'll find the trip unforgettable. For thoughts on Scarecrow, please check out my thoughts on No Streaming Required: Video Quality Warner Archive provided Scarecrow with a strong 1080p master transfer in 2.39:1 when it was released in 2017 sourced from a new 2K scan of the Interpositive. The cinematography of Vilmos Zsigmond is handled with care thanks to the retention of the natural film grain. The transfer unveils great detail and clarity in many background elements and costumes. Black levels are fairly deep, and highlights stay firm with nothing blown out. The film is primarily clear of shortcomings with little damage or dirt lingering. Compression artifacts, banding, and other such issues are avoided in this transfer. The film presents complex colors within the costumes and the environments that are not overly vibrant yet appear natural. Warner Archive has done a nice job with this one. Audio Quality The Blu-Ray comes with a DTS-HD 2.0 Master Audio split mono track that is accurate to the intended soundscape of the feature. The film is not overly reliant on a score, but the diegetic and non-diegetic music comes through with respectful fidelity. Dialogue emanates clearly to capture all of the nuances of the exchanges. The more bustling moments are handled favorably and give the track a bit of texture. There is no serious age-related wear and tear to the track such as hissing, dropouts, or popping. The audio presentation matches the quality established by the video side of things. Optional English (SDH) subtitles are included for the feature film. Special Features On The Road with Scarecrow: A four-and-a-half-minute archival featurette that gives a promotional overview of the production of the film. Trailer (3:21) Final Thoughts Scarecrow is a really engaging road movie that finds two distinct, complicated characters fumbling their way across a number of states, making poor decisions while in search of redemption. With two of our greatest performers in the spotlight, the acting craft on display is unbelievable. These two are able to bring an emotional honesty to the characters even when you find some of their actions baffling. This film is not as known as it should be in the pantheon of '70s cinema, but hopefully it will get the respect it deserves at some point. Warner Archive has released a Blu-Ray that sports a lovely A/V presentation and a brief selection of special features. Detroit's oldest dance academy celebrates 41 years with special performance this weekend
Despite 41 years of activity and service in the community, there's a Detroit arts gem many still don't know about. Detroit-Windsor Dance Academy, founded in 1984 by Kresge Artist Fellow Debra White-Hunt, has spent decades welcoming and nurturing dancers of all ages and experience levels and will present its annual student dance concert on Saturday, June 14. The theme of this year's concert is 'Higher.' 'It's celebrating how we took this year to look at where we are, who we are, and think of what more we can do in this life, in this world,' said White-Hunt. ''Higher' was the word that came to me, so that's the word we have been working with all year, all the students and all the teachers: 'How can we go higher?' Each teacher or special guest that choreographs, they take that theme and make it their own. 'I have a beginning ballet class, and for them I'm using Stevie Wonder's 'Higher Ground.' And you know part of the lyrics say, 'Don't let nobody take you to a low level, keep on going until you reach higher ground.' The Acorn Society, a group of young dancers that we've seen some potential in — their music is 'Anxiety' by Doechii, and the thought behind that is letting go, reaching higher and letting anxiety go out. We have 38 dances; the dances aren't long, because we want to make sure they're complete. And sometimes, when you're younger, you're not ready to do a long dance, so they're short and sweet, and they keep moving.' The concert will also feature a segment of daddy-daughter dance numbers. Set to the music of Michael Jackson, students from age 8 up through 'probably somewhere near 70' will dance with their fathers in celebration of Father's Day. 'That's a very special one for me,' said White-Hunt, 'because my dad was always in it with me. For many, many years, he was always the oldest student here — when he passed away in 2016, he was 95 and still dancing. I think that's where I get my longevity in dancing. He passed away in June, and the concert was in June. The other dads were devastated because they had bonded so much. I didn't know what I was going to do, but I decided to go on and be in the dance as if he were there, and we dedicated it to him and my father-in-law.' 'We dance because we breathe,' she said. 'Our teachers are very passionate and dedicated to the legacy that we have started here. We have nine teachers, and seven of them grew up here. They went away to school and came back to continue to feed and grow the academy, and so for me and my husband, Bruce, it's very special to see them develop as young women and men, to bring forth the next generation of dancers. 'Sometimes, over the years, we've been so busy that I haven't really been able to smell our flowers. But one day, it hit me, (some students) were my age when they started, and now they're all grown up. So I believe that we are doing something really great for the community, and that was our vision and our mission, to establish something that last long beyond our years. We're in the fourth and fifth generations right now of students who've become teachers with us. A couple of the teachers have daughters and sons that are now old enough to take dance, and we welcome that because they are the ones that will be the next leaders." Rochelle Riley, director of arts and culture for the city of Detroit, included White-Hunt in the city's Office of Arts, Culture & Entrepreneurship's (ACE) inaugural class of Detroit ACE honorees in 2022. 'If only Detroit knew what it has had in Debra White-Hunt and her founding of the Detroit-Windsor Dance Academy 41 years ago,' Riley said. 'Her dream-turned-reality-turned-training ground has birthed professional dancers, teachers, studio owners. While more than 15,000 students owe her a debt of thanks, Detroit owes one as well to the city's oldest, largest dance academy.' This wildly popular pizza restaurant from Kendall is coming to South Miami
Kendall's favorite pizza spot is planning to pop up in South Miami. Known for its Detroit-style pies with a crispy, airy crust, Vice City Pizza is taking over the restaurant Bar Bella in South Miami for a summer residency. Starting Saturday, June 14, at Bar Bella, you'll be able to order the square-cut pizzas from Chef Carlos Estarita, which are made with Vice City's special two-day fermented dough. You can order a simple square of cheese or sausage, of course, but Vice City is best known for its special pizzas, including the Roni & Hot Honey (pepperoni and Mike's Hot Honey); the Brie and Fig (mozzarella, brie, gorgonzola, caramelized onion, pistachio and fig jam) and the Ron Swanson (bacon, pepperoni, fennel sausage, banana peppers and Mike's Hot Honey), named for everybody's favorite carnivore on the TV series 'Parks and Recreation.' The Bar Bella menu, which featured tapas and barbecue items, will not be available throughout the residency. But the restaurant's back bar Abi Maria, named for owner Jorgie Ramos' old spot in Downtown Dadeland that closed in 2023, is bringing back its bites menu. You'll find choices like cured meats and cheeses, chicken wings and small plates like calamari, truffle tots, Bolognese arancini and proscuitto croquetas. Ramos, who co-owns Vice City Pizza with Estarita and is also the owner of Cebada Rooftop in Coral Gables, opened Bar Bella in late 2024 in the former space of Taco Craft. Now located at 2615 SW 147th Ave., Vice City Pizza came to life as a pandemic pop up (the original Abi Maria was one of the first places the popular pizzas were served). Estarita quickly became known for making all sorts of nontraditional pies, like La Colombiana, with Colombian hot dog slices, homemade pineapple jam, garlic cilantro sauce, bacon and black forest ham or El Cubiche, with caja china pork, confit garlic and onions and mojo aioli. If South Miami is as booming as Ramos believes, Vice City should fit in nicely. 'All the elements of this neighborhood are ready to explode,' Ramos told the Miami Herald earlier this year. 'Going out two blocks from your home and having good food and drinks and not worrying about parking is great. . . . South Miami is what the Grove used to be. It's surrounded by great neighborhoods and people desperate to stay close to home.' The Vice City residency is scheduled to run through September.
