Court suspends sentence of two Congress MLAs in 2014 road block case
All nine, including Shahpura MLA Manish Yadav and Ladnun MLA Mukesh Bhakar, were found guilty under IPC sections 147 (punishment for rioting) and 283 (causing danger or obstruction in a public way or line of navigation).
The others sentenced by the court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate on June 17, 2025 were Abhishek Chaudhary — who unsuccessfully contested 2023 Assembly elections on a Congress ticket — Dron Yadav, Rajesh Meena, Ravi Kirad, Wasim Khan, Bhanu Pratap Singh and Vidyadhar Meel.
On Tuesday, the District and Sessions court suspended their sentences after their lawyers argued that there is a possibility of delay in disposal of appeal. Senior lawyer V R Bajwa, appearing for the appellants, said that if the execution of the impugned sentence is not postponed till the decision of the appeal, then the appellants will be deprived of their legal rights and that in such a case the execution of the sentence passed by the subordinate court should be postponed until the appeal is decided.
The court accepted their contention and gave the relief to the petitioners. The case will now be heard on August 26, 2025.
Following the trial, the court awarded a one-year sentence and a fine of Rs 3,000 each under IPC Section 147, along with an additional fine of Rs 200 under Section 283.
The nine, at that time students leaders, were part of an August 2014 protest at Rajasthan University. According to court documents, the protesters from the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) had blocked the Jawaharlal Nehru Marg outside the main gate of Rajasthan University, prompting the police to book them.

Their real agenda is to push the poor out of Delhi.' Yadav said that Congress has made efforts in the past, such as in-situ rehabilitation in Kalkaji and Ashok Vihar, and criticised the AAP for neglecting slum dwellers during its tenure. 'The AAP stopped pensions, ration cards, and did not do anything to protect the slums following a court order to evict those living along railway lines,' he protesters said they are against further evictions without resettlement.

'It will build on the 2025 AI Action Summit in Paris co-chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Will take protest to every slum cluster in city: Delhi Congress
In its first major street protest since the BJP formed government in Delhi earlier this year, the Congress Monday accused the Rekha Gupta-led government of forcibly evicting slum dwellers across the city without rehabilitating them. 'The Congress will not allow the BJP to drive the poor out of Delhi. This government's agenda is to remove 'garib, not garibi, (the poor, and not poverty),' said Delhi Congress Chief Devender Yadav, announcing that the party will take its agitation to every JJ cluster in the city. Party leaders invoked the legacy of former CM Sheila Dikshit, claiming theirs was the only party that had made efforts to regularise and resettle slum clusters. 'Congress built in-situ flats in areas like Bhoomiheen Camp and Kathputli Colony. BJP only makes hollow promises,' said former MP Udit Raj. 'What's happening with slum dwellers is no surprise. This is BJP's character,' said former MP and Sheila Dikshit's son Sandeep Dikshit. Amid the demonstration at the Assembly, allegedly held without permission, Delhi Police repeatedly announced that Section 144 was in place and that public gatherings were prohibited. Even as Congress workers continued their demonstration despite warnings, police deployed water cannons and detained at least 36 protesters, including Yadav, who was taken to Subzi Mandi police station. The demonstration was called against the recent demolition in areas such as Jangpura, Kalkaji, Wazirpur and Ashok Vihar. More than 3,000 homes in slums have been demolished and 15,000 families have been rendered homeless over the past five months, without advance notice or alternate housing options, the party alleged. In a symbolic act, party workers brought a paper jhuggi topped with a toy bulldozer, bearing photographs of BJP ministers with the words 'Haye Haye' written below. A poster on a protest truck read: 'Jahan pe kiya jhuggi waalon ko beghar, wahin banao unka ghar (relocate the homeless jhuggi dwellers in the same area)'. Last month, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi visited the Ashok Vihar slum cluster in Jailorwala Bagh, where hundreds of homes were demolished in June as part of an ongoing anti-encroachment drive. Videos shared by the Congress on social media showed Gandhi walking through the debris, speaking to residents who said they were left homeless.
