When it comes to players on the Dallas Cowboys looking to bounce back from injury, Dak Prescott is often the first name mentioned. However, there is another key member of the roster eager to bounce back in 2025. Though things almost looked to be going off the rails, Jake Ferguson issued a strong vote of confidence heading into the preseason.
Following a breakout year where he landed a Pro Bowl nomination, Ferguson's production took a step back in 2024. Injuries played a big part in this, limiting him to just 14 appearances.
With a full offseason to recover, the former fourth-round pick is eager to return to form and get back to the player he looked like in 2023.

During practice on Thursday, Ferguson had to leave early after dealing with some discomfort in his back. He reportedly dealt with spasms following a hit from linebacker Kenneth Murray Jr. and spent some time with the training staff.
After getting some scans done on his back, it was revealed that Ferguson sustained no serious injuries to his back. He's dealing with some bruising where he took the hit, but it didn't keep him off the field for Friday's practice.
While speaking with the media following the day's work, Ferguson provided a little health update of his own. As long as he isn't battling any substantial injuries, he plans on being on the field with his teammates.
"Once I had the reassurance it wasn't anything structural, I can fight through pain. If I can go I'm going to go," Ferguson told reporters, per ESPN.

Looking ahead to this season, Ferguson has a chance to be a real X-factor for the Cowboys. With the newly formed duo of CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens on the outside, defenses are going to be zeroing in on Dallas' wideouts. This should create opportunities for someone like Ferguson to capitalize and rip off some big plays of his own.
Seeing that he racked up nearly 800 yards in 2023, it's clear he and Prescott have a good connection within the offense.
Following two weeks of training camp, Ferguson and the Cowboys will now begin their preseason slate. Dallas will be in action Saturday night, taking on a fellow hopeful NFC contender in the LA Rams.

Cam Ward shows why the Titans took him at No. 1 overall in his preseason debut
The Tennessee Titans are the first to point out that rookie Cam Ward has room for improvement, even as the No. 1 overall draft pick provided plenty of optimism for the future. Ward didn't connect on his first two passes. Then he completed five of his next six for 67 yards and drove the Titans 65 yards on 11 plays, using up 6 minutes, 38 seconds of a 29-7 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. 'It was a good start for him,' coach Brian Callahan said Sunday. 'Encouraging, was productive. But yeah, there's a couple of things that we're going to keep kind of grinding on I think. Still working on getting the ball out fast, still working on the timing part of it ... But overall pretty good." Ward showed the chemistry he's been building with wide receiver Calvin Ridley, connecting with the veteran three times for 50 yards. Best for the Titans is the pocket a revamped offensive line provided for the rookie. Tennessee gave up 52 sacks in 2024 — only Houston and Seattle (54), Cleveland (66) and Chicago (68) allowed more. That's why the Titans signed veteran Dan Moore Jr. to be their new left tackle, moving JC Latham over to right tackle after his rookie season. They also brought in 13-year veteran right guard Kevin Zeitler. Center Lloyd Cushenberry III is on the physically unable to perform list, and the Titans held Zeitler out of the preseason opener. But center Corey Levin and guard Andrew Rupcich both helped show how much this unit has improved working under assistant coach Bill Callahan. "Again, there's a lot of work still to be done and there's a lot of other rushers that are yet to be faced, so we'll build on a first positive first step, but definitely have a lot to keep going,' Callahan said. Injury update Callahan said running back Tyjae Spears will miss a couple of weeks with an injured ankle that had him taken by cart to the locker room during the second quarter of the preseason opener. Spears was seen by reporters with a walking boot on his right foot and using crutches after the game. Callahan said they're waiting on a final word on some things: 'But he will definitely miss some time.' Cushenberry is expected to start practicing this week. He started eight games before hurting his Achilles tendon in November. DT T'Vondre Sweat likely will need a week to recover from a tonsillectomy. Run D woes With Sweat and three-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons both out against the Buccaneers, the Titans struggled like it was 2024 to defend the run. The Titans ranked 26th last season in allowing an average of 133.9 yards per game and gave up 178 to Tampa Bay. Three different Bucs had a long run of 12 yards or longer as Tampa Bay averaged 4.3 yards per carry. 'Not the number we're looking for, and that's got to get improved,' Callahan said. Road trip continues The Titans got to their hotel in Georgia around 4 a.m. Sunday. They practice against the Atlanta Falcons on Tuesday and Wednesday before Friday night's exhibition. ___ AP NFL:

Former Washington Football Star Shines in Steelers Debut
In his first preseason game for the Pittsburgh Steelers, former Washington linebacker Carson Bruener showed he is worthy of a roster spot. The son of ex-Steelers tight end Mark Bruener and seventh-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft led the way with 7 total tackles (5 solo) to help lift coach Mike Tomlin's team to a 31-25 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday night. Bruener, a team captain and starting linebacker for the Huskies in 2024, had a handful of tackles on special teams in his NFL debut, an area where the Steelers' legacy could make an impact as a rookie. Over his five seasons at UW, the 6-foot-1, 227-pounder proved himself capable as a special teams enforcer, earning team MVP honors for the Huskies' unit in 2023 as he waited his turn at linebacker behind a pair of veterans, Edefuan Ulofoshio and Alphonzo Tuputala. "Special teams is something I started playing at the University of Washington early in my career and is something I embrace and really fell in love with," Bruener told after being drafted in April. "It's something I have been able to do my whole career and excel at. I know that is something I am going to be able to bring to Pittsburgh for sure." Recently, the UW captain in 2024 was viewed as a potential cut candidate by Mark Kaboly, a long-time Steelers beat writer who covers the team for the Pat McAfee Show. The performance should give the rookie a boost of confidence as he continues to make a push to earn a roster spot when final cuts come down on August 26.

Pete Carroll had perfect response to question about Geno Smith flip-off of Seahawks fan
Shortly after the Raiders faced the Seahawks in Seattle gasps and pearl clutching swept the NFL news landscape with reports of Geno Smith giving a fan the double birds. It was Smith's first return to Seattle since being traded this offseason to the Raiders. The response from Seattle fans was mostly positive. But one fan near the tunnel where the Raiders entered and exited had a pretty terrible -- and borderline racist -- sign he was holding the elicited the two finger salute from Geno. Carroll was asked about Geno's gesture today and his response was perfect. "Did you see what the sign said?" Carroll responded according to team columnist, Paul Gutierrez. That's a legit question to ask. Did YOU see what the sign said? The sign said "Bigger bust - Geno or Jamarcus Russell?" Honestly the only comparison anyone in their right mind could make between Geno Smith and Jamarcus Russell is that they were both black quarterbacks. Russell was taken first overall. Smith was taken 39th. Russell famously flamed out of the league in three seasons because he didn't want to study his playbook. He just wanted to cash checks. it was so bad the Raiders cut him with cause so they wouldn't have to pay him the remainder of his salary. He basically stole from the league. Smith is entering his 12th NFL season, having been a recent two-time Pro Bowl starter over three seasons in Seattle. And he was traded for a third round pick at the age of 34. That's a highly successful career. That sign was disgusting and neither Geno Smith nor Pete Carroll should be apologizing for Smith's reaction to it. Smith is a prideful man. And most importantly he's a human being. He is entitled to his natural and appropriate reaction to a shameful sign by a shameless fan who deserved worse than a harmless gesture for his offensive sign.
