Beating Retreat resumes at Attari-Wagah border after suspension due to Operation Sindoor
Earlier in the day, the Border Security Force (BSF) announced the resumption of the ceremonial evening retreat at all three Joint Check Posts (JCPs) along the Punjab frontier.
The Beating Retreat ceremony, also known as the flag-lowering event, at the Attari-Wagah, Hussainiwala, and Sadqi Joint Check Posts (JCPs) of the BSF had been suspended on May 9 due to Operation Sindhoor.
The ceremony will be thrown open to the general public, starting Wednesday, marking a return to normalcy at these key border points.
The retreat ceremony, a popular attraction showcasing India's military discipline and cultural pride, is conducted jointly by the BSF and their Pakistani counterparts at designated border points.
In Punjab, the three prominent JCPs where the ceremony is held are Attari (Amritsar district), Hussainiwala (Ferozepur district), and Sadiqi (Fazilka district).
BSF officials have ensured that all necessary security and safety arrangements are in place to manage the expected influx of visitors.
Following the recent terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, tensions escalated between India and Pakistan, leading to the suspension of the daily retreat ceremony at the three key Joint Check Posts along the international border.
However, with the gradual de-escalation of tensions, it has now been decided to resume the ceremonial flag-lowering ritual at all three locations.
Earlier in April, the BSF had announced that it would scale down the ceremonial display during the retreat ceremony at Attari, Hussainiwala, and Sadki in Punjab.
In a post on X, BSF had stated, 'In the wake of the recent tragic attack in Pahalgam, a calibrated decision has been taken to scale down the ceremonial display during the Retreat Ceremony at Attari, Hussainiwala and Sadki in Punjab.'
The key changes included the suspension of the symbolic handshake between the Indian Guard Commander and their Pakistani counterpart will be suspended. (ANI)

Centre likely to change GST slabs: What might get cheaper, what gets costlier?
The Centre is likely to amend the GST structure for several items, including daily-use products and luxury goods, among other items in a bid to rationalise the tax structure, news agency PTI quoted government sources as saying on Friday. The Centre is likely to amend the GST rates ahead of Diwali.(For representation/Mint) The development comes shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced during his Independence Day speech that he will make "this Diwali, double Diwali" for the people of the country. PM Modi promised a Diwali gift in the form of a "big reform of GST." What we know so far on GST-related changes? The government sources have said that the central government has proposed to scrap the existing tax slabs of 12 per cent and 28 per cent of GST rate and keep only 5 per cent and 18 per cent GST rates. The government is also expected to slash the tax on 90 per cent of the goods under the 28 per cent tax bracket and will bring it down to 18 per cent. Similarly, the goods in the 12 per cent slab are proposed to move in the 5 per cent slab. However, the government is also set to introduce a new slab of 40 per cent, which would include goods like tobacco, pan masala and luxury items. A meeting of the GST Council is likely to be held in September or October to consider the proposal. What gets cheaper & what gets expensive? The government sources told news agency ANI that the restructuring of the existing tax slabs and the new slabs will have marginal negative effect on GST collection. A proposal has already been sent to the Group of Ministers (GoM) to enable constructive and inclusive dialogue. The move is likely to benefit economic sectors like agriculture, textiles, fertilisers, renewable energy, automotive, handicrafts, healthcare, insurance, construction, transportation, ANI reported. However, there is a proposal to move "sin goods" like tobacco and pan masala to a new tax slab of 40 per cent. The special rate will be applicable to only seven items, including tobacco. Products like diamonds and precious stones, which are labour-intensive and export-based, will continue to be taxed at the same rate. Meanwhile, the petroleum products will continue to remain outside the revamped GST regime.

Southern Naval Command celebrates 79th Independence Day
Kochi, Aug 15 (PTI) The Southern Naval Command (SNC) on Friday celebrated the 79th Independence Day with its commander-in-chief referring to the role of the armed forces, as seen during Operation Sindoor, in ensuring security and stability of India. Vice Admiral V Srinivas, the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Naval Command, during his speech on the occasion, recounted the 'long and arduous journey of freedom" which laid the foundation of modern India, a Defence release said. 'The rise of the country from the ashes of colonialism to the world's largest democracy redefines India's place in global order," he is quoted as having said. He further said that the country's armed forces play a significant role in ensuring the nation's security and termed Operation Sindoor as a defining moment in India's defence history. Vice Admiral Srinivas said that the operation demonstrated the armed forces 'strength of jointness and strategic foresight" with the Indian Navy playing a critical role in 'asserting complete maritime dominance". He also highlighted the SNC's contribution on various operational and training fronts, like the deployment of the Indian Ocean Ship SAGAR (INS Sunayna), successful circumnavigation as part of Navaika Sagar Parikrama 2 and multiple medical evacuations. He also referred to the diving operations and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief missions carried out by the navy in connection with the foreign cargo vessels MV Wan Hai 503 and MSC Elsa 3 off the Kerala coast. The vice admiral emphasised upon the importance of training to achieve a 'combat ready, credible, cohesive and future ready force", the release said. He also urged the naval personnel to imbibe safety culture as a key enabler of operations and to rededicate themselves to the security, progress and prosperity of the nation while working towards the goal of Viksit Bharat by 2047, it said. Vice Admiral Srinivas reviewed the ceremonial parade held at the SNC after which he paid homage at the war memorial. The parade witnessed a scintillating fly past by naval Dorniers and helicopters proudly displaying the tri colour, all the naval ships were 'dressed overall' with signal flags and the various units and establishments proudly flew the national flag as as part of the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign, the release said.
