Neuroscientist wants you to do this for five mornings in a row
It's easy to assume that the first moments of our days are fairly insignificant, but a neuroscientist has claimed this isn't the case. You may be surprised to hear that the brain is incredibly impressionable in the initial "window" upon waking up.
While this can be a peaceful time for some, Dr Wendy Suzuki, a professor at New York University, warned that one habit is ruining it for others. In a recent Instagram video, she said: "You've been starting your day out all wrong, and your brain hates it. If your first move in the morning is checking your phone, your brain misses out on its most powerful window of the day."
Right after waking, Dr Suzuki claimed that the brain is generally in its "peak neuroplastic mode", which describes a high ability to adapt and change due to surroundings and experience. Dopamine, known as the 'feel-good chemical', is also replenished during sleep, meaning that levels are naturally higher.
But the specialist claimed that anyone turning to a screen first thing may disrupt this process. She continued: "Dopamine and cortisol are naturally high, giving you a boost in motivation, creativity, and focus.
"But screens hijack that potential. So, here's your experiment. For the next five mornings, delay screen time by just 20 minutes. Instead, stretch. Write down three things you want to focus on. Or, just sit with your coffee and your thoughts. Watch what happens when you give your brain space to lead."
Besides this, it's crucial to note that scrolling before bed may have a detrimental impact on mental health, too. In one study, researchers from King Saud University in Saudi Arabia found that an overwhelming nine out of ten participants indulged in pre-sleep screen time.
Although just under half (41.7%) reported 'poor sleep quality', scientists approximated a 'two-fold' risk increase among people using their smartphones for '16 to 30 minutes' at bedtime. The danger escalated further to 'more than three-fold' for those engaged with their devices '31 to 45 minutes' during night-time hours.
At the time, the team wrote: "Our findings suggest that employees who use their smartphones more at bedtime have more risk of being poor sleepers. More attention should be drawn to the misuse of smartphones and its effect sleep quality, health and productivity of adults."
Crucially, this was a 'cross-sectional study', meaning it didn't definitively establish phone usage as the cause of poor sleep, but rather identified a pattern in results. However, other experts do suggest a causal relationship exists.
Rosey Davidson, a sleep consultant at Just Chill Baby Sleep, previously told Gloucestershire Live that our bedtime habits can significantly impact our sleep quality.
She said: "Looking at phone content late at night affects our sleep by exposing us to blue light, which suppresses melatonin production, a hormone crucial for sleep.
"To improve sleep and mental health, establish a bedtime routine that limits screen time an hour before sleep." Furthermore, Rosey advises against using phones first thing in the morning, as this habit can greatly influence your mood for the day.
"When we wake up, our brain transitions from the deeper sleep brain waves (like delta and theta waves) through alpha waves and finally to beta waves," she continued. "This transition makes us more relaxed and suggestible, which is why consuming phone content immediately upon waking can strongly influence our mood and mindset for the day
"Upon waking, take a few moments to breathe and set intentions before reaching for your phone. If you can charge it on the other side of the bedroom, or outside of the bedroom this puts an extra barrier in place."

ITV's Dr Amir shares how 'weight stigma damages lives' in urgent warning to GPs
Dr Amir Khan, who regularly appears on ITV's This Morning, has shared a plea to doctors to take overweight patients more seriously. And he reckons many should take a leaf out of his book NHS GP Dr Amir Khan, who regularly appears on ITV's Lorraine and This Morning, has shared a passionate plea for doctors to take patients who are overweight more seriously, and not just put down all their ailments to how heavy they are. "Living in a larger body shouldn't mean you don't get equal healthcare access," he wrote as part of his Instagram caption. He shared there are five things his patients often say have stopped them receiving proper healthcare as they're overweight, and he made a passionate video, urging other NHS doctors not to get stuck in this rut of putting everything down to weight. Dr Amir said: "Living with obesity or excess weight is hard and can increase your risk of certain conditions, but not every illness is weight-related." He explained "weight stigma damages lives," giving examples of what his patients have said to him. 1. 'They blamed everything on my weight' Dr Amir said: "Patients come in with joint pain, breathlessness, irregular periods or low mood, and they walk out with one answer. 'You need to lose weight'. "No questions, no test, no curiosity, but health is multilayered, and treating weight like it's the root of every problem means serious conditions can get missed. "I've seen things like PCOS, autoimmune conditions, get delayed because no one looked past the BMI. It's not good medicine." 2. 'They wouldn't refer me until I lost weight' Dr Amir shared that "time and time again," patients are not referred for things like "fertility treatment, knee replacement, hernia repairs, and even mental health services" until they've lost weight. He said this isn't "just a barrier" but it's a "health delay with consequences". "For some, weight loss is extremely difficult due to genetics, trauma, medication side effects, or underlying health conditions. Delaying care means people live in pain, in shame, and in fear," he explained, saying it's "often the care that would really help them lose weight safely". 3. 'They didn't believe I eat healthily or exercise because of my weight' Dr Amir said: "We've been fed the myth that thin equals healthy, and fat equals lazy. But bodies are complicated. You can be metabolically healthy at a higher weight, and unhealthy at a lower weight. "Assumptions about a patient's lifestyle based on their appearance aren't just insulting, but they block meaningful support." 4. 'They ignored my pain' "People living in larger bodies are regularly told their pain, especially joint and pelvic pain, is simply the result of their weight, and sometimes, yes, weight does play a role. But that's not an excuse to stop looking," Dr Amir shared. He continued: "I've had patients with endometriosis, joint problems, fibroids, and inflammatory arthritis, all of whom have had their diagnosis delayed just because of their weight. "Being in a bigger body should never mean you're left to suffer." 5. 'I dreaded going to the doctor, so I stopped going' Dr Amir shared this one is "hard," saying when "people feel judged, shamed, or humiliated" when they visit their GP or the hospital, "they start avoiding care altogether". He explained that because of this, they can skip really important appointments, and they don't mention things "until it may be too late". The doctor said: "Weight stigma isn't just unkind, it's a barrier to healthcare. It widens inequalities, and it can cost lives. "So, I say to my patients, you are allowed to be heard before you lose weight. You deserve respect at every size." In the comments, someone wrote: "Thank you so much for recording this post, Amir. Your patients are so very lucky to have you as their GP. You are an amazing doctor and an amazing human being. You have a perfect soul full of kindness, empathy and compassion." Another wrote: "I resonate with number 5. Thanks for sharing; all doctors could take a leaf out of your book." "I think you could educate a lot of GPs," one woman added.

MOUTH SCARE Binky Felstead reveals she 'freaked out' over horrifying post-baby health issue & was swamped with hundreds of messages Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) BINKY Felstead has opened up about a concerning health condition that left her fearing she'd lose teeth. The mum-of-three, 35, recently revealed that she had been diagnosed with gum disease which was destroying her bone and needed urgent attention. In an exclusive interview with The Sun, Binky says: "I actually put the gum thing online because I had no idea what it was and if it was common. "I was really worried about it and I actually only learnt through social media. By the way, hundreds of messages I got from other parents, other women, saying they've got the same. "I think the old wives tale is that you lose a tooth per child. I don't know, I'm freaking out, I'm going to have a tooth in ten years." Mum to daughter India, eight, from her past relationship with Josh 'JP' Patterson and sons Wolfie, three, and Wilder, one, with husband Max Darnton, Binky uses her platform to give an honest account of motherhood – warts and all. She continues: "Anyway, there's lots of not so glamorous things that happen after giving birth and having children. "I mean, I've started having to do my greys. I think it's all fun and games, and obviously the good outweighs the bad. "I think it's really important to talk about those things on social media. It calmed me down knowing how common this was and I've got some really great recommendations. "I'm hoping I can do the same with other people. Like my son's sesame allergy, helping to get these things desensitised and kind of being open and honest and talking about things like having cancerous cells, getting a smear test. "I'm using my platform for helping and educating in any small way I can." Made in Chelsea stars stage the Ultimate Reunion Binky feels her family is now complete, though admits she would like to add one more child to her brood. Eight years on from leaving Made In Chelsea, she says she finally feels like she has her "s**t together". "I feel like I've had child after child, and I've kind of been in the woods slightly, feeling a little bit kind of out of it," she admits. "And now I feel like I'm kind of getting my my Mojo back." Though as happy as she is, Binky isn't immune from the challenges that face mums and dads up and down the country. She's teamed up with Heinz to promote its new Mr. Men Little Miss pasta sauce in a bid to make mealtimes that little bit easier and tastier. The release of the smooth Bolognese sauce, which contains 100 percent natural ingredients and three vegetables, comes after new research found over a third of parents struggle getting their children to eat veg. Binky says: "I think all meal times are pretty stressful, and I've gone down the route of kind of creating beautiful masterpieces that have taken me hours to make, and I put them in front of my children, and there's vegetables in there. There's everything you could think of that's like going to shove goodness in them, and of course they roll their eyes, push their plate away, and they can go completely silent on me. "So I have to take myself off into a different room, just to kind of calm down and just kind of breathe after being completely shot down by my children. "I've just realised that if there's any easy, nutritious, yummy thing out there like this amazing sauce Bolognese sauce. It's a bit of a no brainer, really." Adding to the fun for kids is the inclusion of new character Mr. Ridiculously Good on the label. Away from family life, Binky has been filming the second run of Beyond Chelsea, the Made In Chelsea spin-off following the lives of original stars Binky, Lucy Watson and Rosie Fortescue. Binky pitched the idea to telly bosses last year after being constantly asked what the cast members were up to now and is delighted with how it's been received. And she's also launching her first kidswear range with Marks & Spencer which she calls a "pinch me" moment. She says: "I mean, I've had my first bra fitted at Marks and Spencers. I've grown up with Marks and Spencers. So that was a really cool career highlight." The new pasta sauce will be available nationwide in Tesco from 23rd July and other retailers from the end of July, with an RRP of £3.00 and an introductory offer of £1.75. 5 Binky is married to Max Darnton Credit: Instagram
