Punjab: Drug cartel linked to Turkey-based smuggler busted, three held
Those arrested have been identified as Gurdeep Singh (35), a taxi driver from Amritsar, Pardeep Sharma (29), a garment shop worker from Bikaner in Rajasthan, and Mani Sharma (36), a Ludhiana-based garment businessman. Police teams have recovered 1.10 kg of heroin, Rs 1.06 crore of hawala money (Rs 84.02 lakh in cash and Rs 22 lakh frozen in bank accounts), one cash counting machine, besides impounding their car (without a number plate).
DGP Yadav said preliminary investigation has revealed that the accused Gurdeep was operating the local network of hawala and drugs smuggling on the directions of his handler Nav Bhullar, who had provided him a house to use as a hideout in Amritsar and all logistic support to run the cartel. Accused Bhullar is wanted in big hauls of drug and hawala cases by state agencies, he said.
The DGP said further investigation is underway to trace backward and forward linkages of the cartel.
Sharing operation details, Commissioner of Police (Amritsar) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that acting on a specific intelligence input, a police team strategically formed teams and apprehended Gurdeep Singh from near Lok Heart School in Ram Tirath Road in Amritsar and recovered the drug consignment and drug money from his possession.
The operation was conducted under the supervision of DCP (Detective) Ravinderpal Singh, ADCP (Detective) Jagbinder Singh and ACP (Detective) Harminder Singh Sandhu.
The Police Commissioner said during interrogation, accused Gurdeep Singh talked about the involvement of accused -- Pardeep Sharma and Mani Sharma -- and also revealed that the latter had delivered Rs 5 lakh each in drug money. Following revelations, police teams tracked both the accused and arrested them, he said, adding that further investigations are on.

Soldier dies in accidental firing in J-K's Doda
Bhaderwah/Jammu: An army personnel was killed when his service rifle accidentally went off inside a camp in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Tuesday. Sepoy Suresh Biswal was on guard duty when his colleagues heard a gunfire from his post at Sarna camp in Bhaderwah, the officials said. They said the soldier was found in a pool of blood and was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead. Govt withdraws compulsory leave imposed on IPS officer
Bengaluru: The government on Monday appointed senior IPS officer K Ramachandra Rao as the DGP for Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement, withdrawing the compulsory leave imposed on him following the arrest of his stepdaughter and actress Ranya Rao in connection with a gold smuggling case. Prior to this new role, he served as the Chairman and Managing Director of the Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation. 'The order of compulsory leave with respect to Dr K Ramachandra Rao, IPS (KN 1993) is hereby withdrawn and the officer is posted with immediate effect and until further orders as Director General of Police, Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement in the upgraded vacant post,' a government order said. The post of Director General of Police, Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement is declared equivalent in status and responsibilities to the cadre post of Director General of Police, Criminal Investigation Department, Special Units & Economic offences, Bengaluru under Rule 12 of IPS (Pay) Rules 2016 as included in Schedule Il of the said rule, it said. Rao was sent on compulsory leave in March.

Terraform Labs founder Do Kwon pleads guilty to US fraud charges in $40 billion crypto collapse

REUTERS/Jane Rosenberg Do Kwon, the South Korean cryptocurrency entrepreneur behind two digital currencies that lost an estimated $40 billion in 2022, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to two US charges of conspiracy to defraud and wire fraud. Kwon, 33, who co-founded Singapore-based Terraform Labs and developed the TerraUSD and Luna currencies, entered the plea at a court hearing in New York before US District Judge Paul Engelmayer. He had pleaded not guilty in January to a nine-count indictment charging him with securities fraud, wire fraud, commodities fraud and money laundering conspiracy. Accused of misleading investors in 2021 about TerraUSD - a so-called stablecoin designed to maintain a value of $1 - Kwon pleaded guilty to the two counts under an agreement with the Manhattan US Attorney's office, which brought the charges. "Do Kwon used the technological promise and investment euphoria around cryptocurrency to commit one of the largest frauds in history," Manhattan US Attorney Jay Clayton said in a statement. He faces up to 25 years in prison when Engelmayer sentences him on December 11, though prosecutor Kimberly Ravener said the government had agreed to advocate for a prison term of no more than 12 years provided he accepts responsibility for his crimes. Kwon is one of several cryptocurrency moguls to face federal charges after a slump in digital token prices in 2022 prompted the collapse of a number of companies. Prosecutors alleged that when TerraUSD slipped below its $1 peg in May 2021, he told investors a computer algorithm known as "Terra Protocol" had restored the coin's value. Instead, they said, he arranged for a high-frequency trading firm to secretly buy millions of dollars of the token to artificially prop up its price. Prosecutors said that false claim and others drove retail and institutional investors to buy Terraform products and boost the value of Luna - a more traditional token that fluctuated in value but was closely linked to TerraUSD - to $50 billion by the spring of 2022. In court, Kwon apologised for his conduct. "I made false and misleading statements about why it regained its peg by failing to disclose a trading firm's role in restoring that peg," Kwon said. "What I did was wrong." Kwon agreed in 2024 to pay $80 million as a civil fine and be banned from crypto transactions as part of a $4.55 billion settlement he and Terraform reached with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Kwon has been detained since his extradition from Montenegro late last year. He also faces charges in South Korea. As part of the deal, prosecutors will not oppose Kwon's potential application to be transferred abroad after serving half his US sentence, Ravener said.
