The 'Fantastic Four' Mid-Credits Scene Teases Marvel's Most Exciting New Character
Let's get one thing out of the way: Yes, The Fantastic Four: First Steps has two end credits scenes. In classic Marvel fashion, one appears in the middle of the credits, while another appears at the end. While the latter is an animated theme song, in an homage to the 1967 cartoon intro, the former is quite revealing.
The mid-credits scene jumps ahead to four years after the Fantastic Four's victory over Galactus in New York. Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby) is reading to her and Reed Richard's (Pedro Pascal) son, Franklin, at home. She gets up to find another book, but when she returns, she finds Franklin with a mysterious cloaked figure holding a mask. She looks horrified and the ominous music swells—who is this person? That's Doctor Doom.
The infamous villain, also known as Victor Von Doom, is an icon both in the Fantastic Four comics and overall superhero history. The power-hungry scientific genius is known by his armor suit, mask, and green cloak. One of his biggest adversaries is the Fantastic Four's Reed Richards, as the two began as college rivals, according to Marvel. He hails from the fictional Eastern European country of Latveria (that empty chair in the United Nations scene was a subtle reference to him) and is known for his weapons, robotics, and sorcery.
While this is Doom's first appearance in the current era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (he was portrayed by Julian McMahon in the 2005 and 2007 live action Fantastic Four movies), he is set to appear in the upcoming superhero crossover film Avengers: Doomsday, which debuts on Dec. 18, 2026. (A message even flashes across the screen promising that the Fantastic Four will return in Doomsday.) The best part? He'll be played by none other than Robert Downey Jr.
The actor is known as Avenger leader Tony Stark/Iron Man, who died in 2019's Endgame, but with the introduction of some multiverse magic, Marvel can kind of get away with anything. Downey's casting was announced at Comic-Con in 2024, causing fans to lose their minds. He'll be joined by other big names in Doomsday, including Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Florence Pugh as Yelena, and many more, according to Deadline.
Of course, Marvel's 'first family' will be there too: Pedro Pascal as Mister Fantastic, Joseph Quinn as Human Torch, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as the Thing, and Kirby as the Invisible Woman. Time will tell if super-toddler Franklin will also be involved, but until then, let's hope he didn't get too close to Doom.

Spider-Man 4: Kevin Feige Confirms ‘Street Level' Story & Why Punisher Is in Brand New Day
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has shared some major behind-the-scenes details regarding the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Feige recently disclosed details about multiple upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movies during a roundtable interview in Los Angeles for The Fantastic Four: First Steps. With Spider-Man: Brand New Day set to begin production later this summer, Feige was asked about the superhero sequel, which will see Tom Holland suiting up as Peter Parker/Spider-Man for the first time since 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home. Spider-Man: No Way Home ended with Doctor Strange erasing everyone's memories of Peter Parker to protect the multiverse. With no one to turn to following this massive change, the movie ended with the MCU's Peter becoming closer to his comic book counterpart, complete with a cheap apartment and homemade Spider-Man suit. Many fans took this to mean that the next Spider-Man movie would feature a street level story. However, reports soon emerged that Sony wanted another multiverse movie while Feige and Holland wanted a street level story. Despite the addition of street level vigilante Punisher to the cast, the direction of Brand New Day still hadn't been officially confirmed by Marvel until now. What did Kevin Feige reveal about Spider-Man: Brand New Day? 'I think there's a promise at the end of No Way Home that, for as sad as it is, that Peter is forgotten by everyone in his life. We are seeing for the first time in the Tom Holland Spider-Man stories, him being a proper Spider-Man. Him being, by himself, dedicated to saving the city, and dealing with—for lack of a better term—street level crime as opposed to world-ending events that he faced when working with the other characters,' Feige revealed during the roundtable discussion, confirming that Brand New Day would be a grounded, New York City-set story, similar to 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming. Feige also revealed why Jon Bernthal's Punisher was part of the cast for Brand New Day, explaining, 'So when you do that, you say, 'OK, who are the other street level characters that we've never seen him interact with?' And of course, I love that the Punisher started in a Spider-Man comic, and that great cover . . . I don't wanna say too much, but I will say too much. Destin is doing an amazing job right now on that movie. It starts shooting very soon, and he's got 8 or 9 comic covers up on his wall in his art department that he is bringing to life in this movie. It's super cool.' Besides Holland and Bernthal, actors confirmed for Spider-Man: Brand New Day include Sadie Sink and Liza Colón-Zayas in undisclosed roles. Zendaya and Jacob Batalon are also expected to reprise their respective roles as Michelle 'MJ' Jones-Watson and Ned Leeds, although the extent of their involvement remains unknown at this time. There have also been reports of Mark Ruffalo appearing as Bruce Banner/Hulk, but Marvel has yet to confirm this casting. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to hit theaters on July 31, 2026. Do You Need to See Any Other Marvel Movies Before ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps'?
Here's how it connects with the rest of the MCU Marvel's First Family is finally part of the MCU with 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps,' and they have a truly storied history. But that might make you worry that you have a lot of homework to do before seeing the film. Now in theaters, the film directed by Matt Shakman takes the MCU to a retro-futuristic New York, where the Fantastic Four have become a beloved group of heroes. This time around, they're played by Pedro Pascal (Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm) and Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm). More from TheWrap 'Tron: Ares' Brings New Nine Inch Nails Video and Light Cycle Chases to Comic Con Larry Ellison to Hold 35.5% of Family's Voting Rights in New Paramount, National Amusements After Skydance Merger Closes Stephen King's 'The Long Walk' Gets Tense New Trailer as the Game Begins Cole Escola Joins Melissa McCarthy in Warner Bros. Animated Christmas Musical 'Margie Claus' | Video Earth faces the threat of Galactus, the devourer of worlds. And we mean that literally; the space giant physically consumes entire planets to satiate an insatiable hunger. He's a major villain in the comics, just as the Fantastic Four are some of Marvel's most major heroes. So, what other MCU projects do you need to watch before seeing the movie? Well, as it turns out, nothing. Yes, seriously. 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' marks one of the very few Marvel films — certainly the first in several years — where you don't actually have to watch any previous MCU installments to understand what's going on. That's due in large part to the fact that the events of this film take place on an entirely different Earth. Here, we're on Earth-828, so named in honor of Marvel legend Jack Kirby, who was born on August 28. There's been some debate on which Earth the MCU primarily exists in, though Marvel head Kevin Feige swears its Earth-616. Regardless, that means that none of the action that's happened in the rest of Marvel's films, as far as we know, has had any connection or bearing on the world of 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps.' So, you can go into this film as a complete Marvel newbie, and be totally fine. 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' hits theaters everywhere on July 25. ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps' Defying Expectations At Weekend Box Office
Ebon Moss-Bachrach in "The Fantastic Four: First Steps." The Fantastic Four: First Steps, starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, is beating pre-release projections on its way to a $125 million opening at the domestic box office. The fourth film iteration of Marvel's First Family of Superheroes stars Pascal, Kirby, Quinn and Moss-Bachrach as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/The Human Torch and Ben Grimm/The Thing, respectively. Rather than going the origin film route, director Matt Shakman picks up the story four years after a cosmic event during a space mission altered each of the scientists' DNA and gave them unique superpowers. The Fantastic Four: First Steps — which marks the characters' debut in Disney's Marvel Cinematic Universe— earned an estimated $56 million on Friday and is projected by Deadline to earn $125 million in the film's opening Friday to Sunday frame. The film opened Friday in 4,125 North American theaters after playing in Thursday previews. If Deadline's $125 million opening weekend projection holds, it will match the same amount of money James Gunn's Superman earned from July 11-13. Released by Warner Bros.' DC Studios division, Superman opened on 4,135 screens in its opening weekend. To date, Superman has earned $264.6 million domestically and $172.7 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $437.2 million against a $225 million production budget before prints and advertising costs, according to The Numbers. David Corenswet in "Superman." 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' Box Office Was Projected To Open Much Lighter Going into the weekend, three major Hollywood trade publications all projected The Fantastic Four: First Steps to open with anywhere between $100 million to $110 million domestically, an amount far below Superman's $125 million opening. As such, Disney and Marvel Studios will no doubt be celebrating the overperformance of the film after the lackluster showings of the studios' first two MCU releases of 2025: Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Thunderbolts* (aka The New Avengers). With the huge opening for The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Superman will no doubt be kicked off the top of the domestic box office perch, but how far it will fall is yet to be seen. In the film's second weekend, from July 18-20, Superman held onto the No. 1 spot domestically with a take of $58.4 million. Since there are no other wide releases this weekend and Superman handily defeated last weekend's newcomers I Know What You Did Last Summer, Smurfs and Eddington, in all likelihood the latest Man of Steel film will finish at No. 2 at the domestic box office this weekend. Note: This box office report will be updated throughout the weekend as new numbers are released. The final numbers for this weekend's box office will be released on Monday.
