Ladli Behna scheme aid increased by ₹250 per month, says CM Mohan Yadav
Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh chief minister Mohan Yadav on Thursday announced an increase in monthly financial assistance under the Ladli Behna Scheme by ₹250. Starting this Diwali in October, the amount will be increased from ₹1,250 to ₹1,500 per month for eligible women.
Addressing a programme organised in Talun village of Barwani on World Sickle Cell Day, online from the Indore collectorate, CM Yadav said, 'Just like last year, we will provide ₹250 extra in the month of August on the occasion of Rakshabandhan. From October, the monthly assistance will be increased to ₹1,500.'
Currently, the scheme benefits about 12.7 million women in the age group of 21 years to 60 years.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led state government started the scheme in March 2023, and in the manifesto of the Assembly Election 2023, the BJP had announced to increase the amount to ₹3,000 per month. After the election, the opposition raised the matter on many occasions.

CM Yadav participated in the event from Indore as his helicopter did not take off due to inclement weather. Governor Mangubhai Patel and deputy chief minister Rajendra Shukla travelled by road to attend the programme.

Sickle Cell patients growing in tribal pockets of undivided Visakhapatnam district, says expert
Sickle Cell Disease is prevalent among the tribal people, particularly those living in the Agency areas of Alluri Sitharama Raju district, according to Paripandla Sridevi, an Associate Professor in the Central Tribal University, Vizianagaram. An estimated 1% of the total population has SCD, and 4% are carriers of the sickle cell trait, Prof. Sridevi said on the eve of World Sickle Cell Day, which is observed on June 19 every year. Prof. Sridevi has been conducting research in the tribal areas of the undivided Visakhapatnam district in the North Andhra region, for the past three years. The research is being conducted as part of the ICMR–National Task Force Project, which has been going on for the past seven years. The SCD is caused by sickle cell gene, a defective one which looks like a sickle. People affected with the disease are born with two sickle cell genes—one from each parent. Those born with one sickle cell gene, called sickle cell trait, are generally healthy, but they can pass on the defective gene to their children, she said. 'Initially, Prof. Sudhakar of the Department of Human Genetics, Andhra University, has worked on the project. Then I worked on the same project in Madhya Pradesh. I have been working on the project for the past three years at Gannela, Madagada and Paderu of ASR district,' Prof. Sridevi told The Hindu. 'I have noticed that SCD patients are unable to get blood transfusions and hydroxyurea on time due to poor amenities in the tribal areas. Stigma is attached to the disease as many tribal people think it is a curse. Some others dismiss it as common anaemia. We train ASHA workers to create awareness among the tribals on the need to opt for timely treatment for SCD and to dispel the myths,' she said. Prof. Sridevi said such research projects act as a bridge between the tribal people and the government as they bring the issues to the notice of the authorities concerned. 'We want the treatment facilities of SCD to be improved. We counsel tribal people about the dangers associated with marriages between close relations, a common practice in the Agency areas,' she said. Quoting from data provided by ASR district DM&HO Dr. Jamal Basha, Prof. Sridevi said that 4,10,380 have been screened for sickle cell anaemia in the undivided Visakhapatnam district as on June 18. Among them, 1,488 were identified as SCD positive, 12,599 carriers and 3,80,665 were negative. The government has made arrangements for the necessary medicines and nutrition for the patients with the goal completely eradicating SCD in Andhra Pradesh by 2047.

Eradication possible through awareness: Collector
Vijayawada: NTR district collector Dr G Lakshmisha on Thursday emphasised that Sickle Cell Anaemia can be eradicated through comprehensive awareness, announcing large-scale awareness programmes which commenced on June 19. He highlighted a robust action plan in place to curb the disease, with a specific focus on tribal areas. On Thursday, to mark World Sickle Cell Day, the District Medical and Health Department organised a Sickle Cell awareness programme at the Kondapalli Tribal Welfare Girls' School. Collector Lakshmisha, along with other officials, unveiled posters, pamphlets, and manuals related to the Sickle Cell Anaemia Eradication Mission and comprehensive disease information. Speaking at the event, the collector stressed the urgent need to create widespread awareness about the disease across various segments of society, as part of the mission to eradicate Sickle Cell Anaemia even before 2047. He explained that while healthy red blood cells are typically round, in Sickle Cell Anaemia, these cells are crescent-shaped. He clarified that the disease is hereditary, passed from parents, and is not contagious. He added that the disease can be diagnosed through a simple blood test. He reassured that individuals with Sickle Cell Anaemia need not worry, as timely identification and proper medical care can significantly improve a patient's quality of life.

Kanpur CMO suspended after public spat with DM that exposed UP BJP rift
During his suspension period, Nemi would be attached to the Directorate General and Medical Health Services in Lucknow. According to a government order issued Thursday, Shravasti Additional Chief Medical Officer Uday Nath has been appointed as the new CMO of Kanpur. After the suspension order, Nemi addressed a press conference here, alleging the DM was 'pressuring' him to carry out 'illegal' work, and went after him since the CMO denied to oblige. Lucknow: Kanpur Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Hari Dutt Nemi was suspended Thursday after days of public spat with District Magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh, a dispute that threatened to cause divisions with the state BJP with party MLAs taking sides. The district magistrate and the chief medical officer were locked in a public quarrel for days. At the centre of their fight are corruption allegations against Nemi and the CMO questioning Singh's style of functioning. Singh sought the CMO's removal. Their fights also brought to the fore the differences within the BJP, with some MLAs siding with the CMO, while others with the DM. Samajwadi Party claimed that while it may appear to be a case of two officers sparring, it is actually a fight between Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and his deputy Brajesh Pathak who is also state health minister. A section of BJP legislators from Kanpur, including Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana, lobbied in favour of Nemi, urging the government not to remove him. Mahana wrote to Pathak Tuesday, defending the CMO's conduct and urging he be allowed to continue in Kanpur. Mahana praised Nemi's 'people-friendly' approach and effective implementation of government health schemes. BJP MLC Arun Pathak and Govindnagar MLA Surendra Maithani wrote separate letters to the deputy chief minister, commending the CMO's 'respectful' behavior towards public representatives. However, BJP MLA from Bithoor Abhijeet Singh Sanga took a different stand and wrote to Chief Minister Adityanath, rather than Pathak. In his letter, Sanga accused Nemi of corruption and alleged the CMO was behind the circulation of controversial audio clips that allegedly maligned the district magistrate. He further claimed Nemi misbehaved with staff, disobeyed government orders, and manipulated doctor transfers for personal gain. Former BJP MLA Neeraj Chaturvedi also waded into the controversy, alleging Tuesday that the assembly speaker, without naming him, is influencing the matter in favour of the CMO. Chaturvedi sought a thorough investigation into the CMO's working style. In a letter to the state government, he alleged serious irregularities in healthcare services, citing alleged deficiencies found during inspections of Community Health Centres (CHCs) and Primary Health Centres (PHCs). He also mentioned alleged arbitrary transfers of doctors under Nemi's tenure. Singh accused the CMO of negligence and unprofessional conduct, and claimed this has contributed to the deteriorating state of health services in the district. Tensions escalated after three audio clips, purportedly featuring CMO Nemi making derogatory remarks about the DM, surfaced on social media. 'This is the only DM in 75 districts who is taking credit for everything. If any meeting can happen in 20 minutes, he takes an hour to narrate stories from all around the world and exaggerates things. Now I am seeing women who go for meetings get irritated,' he was heard saying. Nemi, however, denied it was his voice and claimed it was AI-generated. The authenticity of these audio clips has not been independently verified by ThePrint. But after the matter escalated following several complaints from health officials, district magistrate Singh wrote a letter to the principal secretary of health to remove the CMO, saying that several complaints had been received against him for not following government orders, mentally harassing district health officials and seeking bribes for transfer postings. Also on Saturday, the DM confronted the CMO about the clips during a meeting. Nemi questioned the authenticity of the recordings, claiming they were manipulated using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to malign his image. Not satisfied with the response, the DM asked the CMO to leave the meeting. Responding to the charges, Nemi reiterated his innocence and alleged a conspiracy to tarnish his image. He said his sole focus was to improve the functioning of the health department. According to sources in the district administration, the DM had flagged instances of alleged negligence on part of the CMO during multiple surprise inspections over the last few months. He planned to take action after these visits. The CMO had also been reportedly absent from the office for the past few days. In the meanwhile, a photo of a saffron towel purportedly placed on his chair went viral on social media, garnering a lot of attention. Samajwadi Party MLA Amitabh Bajpai said, 'The rift between officials and BJP MLAs is common in the state, but I feel that this issue is actually between Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak. Common people are feeling betrayed by this government as corruption has not stopped.' Bajpai hinted the DM is considered close to Chief Minister Adityanath and the CMO is in the good books of Deputy Chief Minister Pathak.
