WNBA expands to 18 teams with Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia added

Three WNBA franchises are set to join the league by 2030, with Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia confirmed as the new teams on Monday.
The expansion will push the WNBA to 18 total teams. Cleveland (2028) will be the first franchise to play in the WNBA among the latest additions. Detroit is scheduled to join in 2029 and Philadelphia one year later.
"Great demand for WNBA franchises," commissioner Cathy Engelbert said Monday at a news conference announcing the growth. "There was huge demand. Really proud of what my team has done. Looking forward to future conversations as the league continues to grow."
The league currently stands at 13 teams, with franchises in Toronto and Portland set to enter the WNBA in 2026.
Engelbert previously said the league was targeting 16 teams before 2028. She said the expansion announced Monday included "historic franchise fees," but would not confirm the reported cost of over $200 million.
She said on Monday the path and strategy through the end of the decade only became more clear as the discussions on expansion continued.
"I can't overstate the talent available, women's college basketball and internationally," Engelbert said of the key factors in forging ahead with expansion and why the timing was right.
All three franchises will be under the majority ownership of the NBA teams in their cities.
Nick Barlage, CEO of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Rock Entertainment Group, said Cleveland plans to pay homage to the past of the Rockers' franchise, which existed from 1997 to 2003.
The Detroit franchise is also a WNBA reboot. The Shock were one of the first expansion teams and played from 1998-2009.
Arn Tellem, vice chairman of Pistons Sports and Entertainment, said the city's pride brought in more investment interest than they could accommodate.
"When we thought about the idea of bidding for a WNBA franchise, the incredible history we have, we felt this was going to be a huge success. It's a huge win for our city," Tellem said. "So often Cleveland and Detroit get overlooked for these hot, sexy cities in the South. I love this win for Michigan and Ohio and my hometown of Philadelphia."

Halftime entertainer Red Panda injured during WNBA performance

One of the most popular acts in halftime entertainment sustained an injury Tuesday night in Minneapolis as Rong "Krystal" Niu, better known under her stage name of "Red Panda," needed to be assisted off the court after falling during halftime of the WNBA Commissioner's Cup championship game between the Indiana Fever and the Minnesota Lynx. Niu has delighted basketball fans in numerous NBA, college basketball and WNBA venues since her debut in 1993. Red Panda rides a seven-foot-tall unicycle while catching and balancing a large number of metal bowls on her head during her act. Reporters for MinnPost and ESPN confirmed that Niu took a hard spill, falling from her unicycle during Tuesday's performance. The popular performer laid still for some time, cradling her left wrist before being taken off the court in a wheelchair. Once called "the best halftime act in basketball" by Dime Magazine, Niu retired in 2013 to support her father while he battled cancer. She practiced occasionally during this timeframe and suffered her first wrist injury. After she mourned her father's death due to esophageal cancer and helped her mother deal with an illness, Niu made her return in 2015 as she revealed in a "Sports on Earth" interview that she couldn't stay away. "I missed it," Niu said. "The crowd. The energy. The challenge. From my heart, I feel like this is a part of my home. Although I lost my father, I still have this part of my life with me, just like before."

Seeing growth potential, Natixis plans to double banking staff in Japan

Natixis has hired senior managers from JPMorgan Chase and Societe Generale for its new banking business in Japan, and plans to double Tokyo staff in coming years as it expands the operation. Makoto Kawamura, formerly head of JPMorgan Chase Bank's Japan treasury and chief investment office in Tokyo, joined Natixis Corporate & Investment Banking as Japan treasury head in June, according to a spokesperson. The firm also recruited Hideaki Sugahara, who was a director at Societe Generale, as corporate coverage head. "There's a big potential for us to expand in Japan,' Bruno Le Saint, CEO of corporate and investment banking for Asia Pacific, said in an interview in Tokyo on Tuesday. "We aim to double' the number of employees for the firm's banking business in Japan from the current 68 over "the next five to seven years,' he said. The move comes as Paris-based Natixis starts a new banking branch in Tokyo on Tuesday, in the latest sign of a global financial firm vying for business opportunities in Japan as companies improve governance. The lender is targeting corporate clients as well as global private equity and infrastructure funds with its banking products and industry expertise, it said by email. "One of the reasons why we are very excited is some of our global clients — private equity firms, infrastructure firms — are looking to come into Japan and they want to rely on people they know well' to secure transactions, Le Saint said. "This is exactly what we want to do.' Kawamura has three decades of experience in financial markets, covering areas ranging from foreign exchange and derivatives to corporate finance, the spokesperson said. Sugahara has spent more than two decades managing corporate relationships, including through his stint of more than 10 years at Societe Generale. Natixis's Tokyo Branch is restarting under a banking license obtained in May, after three years of operating under a money-lender permit, in a change that will help it broaden its range of financial services, according to a release. Natixis Corporate & Investment Banking announced five hires in Japan in February last year, part of its Asia-Pacific expansion. The French bank's separate securities subsidiary in Japan had 90 employees as of the end of December, according to filings.
