Trump bids farewell to Musk, assures DOGE will remain functional

Washington DC: US President Donald Trump on Friday praised Elon Musk for doing a "fantastic job" as head of the DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) and assured that the department, founded by Musk to cut unnecessary funding and boost the US economy, will remain functional. Addressing the press at the Oval Office with Elon Musk on his last day, Trump said. "Elon has worked tirelessly helping lead the most sweeping and consequential government reforms in generations." Trump also assured that many of the DOGE employees are staying behind and suggested that Musk will remain integral in the project. "Many of the DOGE people are staying behind, too, so they're not leaving, Elon is really not leaving. He's gonna be back and forth. I want to thank Elon for his time as a special government employee for coming and helping us." The President also listed the contracts that were terminated after DOGE recommendations to help boost the economy. "We have terminated many-many contracts and many contracts are being looked at and it may be six months or maybe a year or something in some cases. We are going through procedures, we are going through courts and we'll remember you (Elon Musk). DOGE cancelled USD 101 million for DEI contracts at the Department of Education. USD 59 million for illegal alien hotel rooms in New York City. USD 45 million for diversity, equity and inclusion scholarships in Burma. USD 42 million for social and behavioural change in Uganda, USD 40 million to improve the social and economic inclusion of migrants. USD 8 million for mice transgenders," Trump said. Tesla CEO Musk reaffirmed that this is just the beginning of DOGE, and that the department's influence would only grow stronger with time. "This is not the end of DOGE but really the beginning. My time as a special government employee really had to end. It was a limited time. The DOGE will only grow stronger with time. The DOGE influence will go stronger. Musk added that he intends to give the president advice even as he closes out his time in the administration. "I expect to continue to provide advice whenever the president would like advice," Musk said in response to a question from a reporter. "I hope so," Trump chimed in. "I expect to remain a friend and an adviser and certainly, if there's anything the president wants me to do, I'm at the president's service," Musk added. Musk on Thursday announced his decision to step down as a 'Special Government Employee.' In a post on X, he wrote, "As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President Donald Trump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending. The DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government." Earlier, Musk has criticised Trump's 'One Big Beautiful Bill', saying "I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decreases it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing."

Trump to bid farewell to 'terrific' Elon Musk

Washington DC: US President Donald Trump is set to bid farewell to his billionaire adviser Elon Musk with a press event in the Oval Office later on Friday. "This will be his last day, but not really, because he will, always, be with us, helping all the way," Trump said in a post on his Truth Social media platform on Thursday. "Elon is terrific! See you tomorrow at the White House," Trump said. Musk has been heading up the Department of Government Efficiency or DOGE that has been behind the drastic federal workforce cuts. Over a month ago, Musk indicated that from May onwards, he would be spending "significantly" less time working as Trump's cost-cutter and focus on his e-car company Tesla, which has posted plunging sales figures. Musk claimed that DOGE had saved taxpayers $160 billion although the numbers have been questioned, with some suggesting that some savings had been double-counted. It hasn't been a smooth 130 days in Washington, with Elaine Kamarck of the Brookings Institution telling AFP news agency the beginning of the end "started (in) mid-March when there were several meetings in the Oval Office and in the cabinet room where basically Elon Musk got into fights." Musk publicly called Trump's trade adviser Peter Navarro "dumber than a sack of bricks." As indicated by Trump in his social media post, this doesn't appear to be the end of things. "I think they genuinely like each other and I think Musk has a lot of money that he can contribute to campaigns if he is so moved. I think there will be a continued relation," Kamarck told AFP.

Indian PM Modi assures strong response to every terrorist attack

Kanpur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday issued stern warning to Pakistan for "sponsoring" terrorism and said that India will respond strongly to every terrorist attack. He stated that India will not differentiate between state and non-state actors, and those responsible will be held accountable and punished, regardless of their location or affiliation. "If I say this straight in Kanpuriya, dushman kahin bhi ho honk diya jayega," PM Modi said while addressing the gathering here. Without mincing words, PM Modi emphasised that India will not be intimated of hollow nuclear threats. "India will not be scared of hollow threats of atom bomb and won't take decisions on this basis (of such a threat). India will look at the 'aaka' of terrorism and its sponsoring government with only one view: Pakistan's state and non-state game will not work anymore," PM Modi said. The Prime Minister laid down India's stand and its plan of action against terrorism, saying that any terrorist attack that happens, India will respond strongly to every terrorist attack, with the timing and terms of the response decided by the Armed Forces. "In its fight against terrorism, India has decided on three rules: every terrorist attack will be answered strongly. The army will decide on how to answer and in what way to answer. The conditions to respond to a terrorist attack will also be decided by the army," PM Modi asserted. He emphasised the importance of self-reliance in defence and economy, citing the "Atmanirbhar Bharat" campaign as a key initiative. He highlighted India's growing strength and its ability to respond decisively to terrorist threats. PM Modi gave examples of Make in India and India's weapon systems through Operation Sindoor, where advanced weapons such as BrahMos entered deep into enemy territory and caused havoc. "The world witnessed the power of Make in India and its weapon through Operation Sindoor. Our Indian weapons (systems), including the BrahMos missile, entered the enemy territory and caused havoc. The explosions happened on target. We have received this power from our resolve for Aatmnirbhar Bharat," PM Modi said. Highlighting India's resolve to remain self-reliant, the Prime Minister recalled times when the country relied on other nations for its safety. He said that becoming Aatmanirbhar was crucial for the country's self-respect. "There was a time when India depended on other countries for its safety. We have tried to change these circumstances. India becomes Aatmanirbhar, it is good for the economy, but it is also important for the country's self-respect," PM Modi said. The Prime Minister mentioned Operation Sindoor, stating that it is not over yet and warning enemies not to be fooled. He recalled India's military action in Pakistan, where terror camps were destroyed, and the Pakistan Army begged for a ceasefire. "We destroyed terrorist camps deep inside (Pakistan). Our army performed with such courage that the Pakistani army was forced to demand a halt to the conflict. I salute the courage and valour of the armed forces. During Operation Sindoor, the enemy that was begging shouldn't remain in any delusion. Operation Sindoor has not finished yet," PM Modi said. He apprised about his meeting with the family members of slain victim Shubham Dwivedi, who was shot dead in the ghastly April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack, before his wife. The PM said that the outrage felt by "our sisters and daughters" has translated into Operation Sindoor. "This program was supposed to happen on April 24. However, I had to cancel my visit to Kanpur due to the Pahalgam attack. Our son from Kanpur, Shubham Dwivedi, was also a victim of the terrorist attack. We can feel the pain of our daughter Ashanya. The world witnessed the outrage felt by our sisters and daughters in the form of Operation Sindoor," PM Modi said. PM Modi was speaking at an event in Kanpur where he inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for 15 development projects costing Rs 47,600 crores. He also flagged off Kanpur Metro's new corridor between Chunniganj and Nayaganj.
