Chuba Hubbard: Panthers' goal this year is winning the Super Bowl
Hubbard told Scott Fowler of the Charlotte Observer that the Panthers have assembled a team that can realistically think about a championship.
'If the goal isn't to make the playoffs and win a Super Bowl,' Hubbard said, 'you're selling yourself short. So that's always been the goal. That's the goal this year. And I think we're the closest we've ever been.'
Hubbard said players like him who have been around during some tough seasons know it's past time to turn things around.
'I think guys are finally sick of being the same ol', same ol' Carolina Panthers,' he said. 'I think we want to get back to what they did here in the past, in 2015 [when the Panthers went to the Super Bowl] and some of those other years when they had deep playoff runs and had the crowd involved and the city hyped up. We haven't had that.'
They're long shots this year, but after an ugly start to last season, the Panthers turned things around down the stretch, going a respectable 4-5 in their last nine games and playing well in some of their losses, including going down to the wire against both of last year's Super Bowl teams, the Chiefs and Eagles. Hubbard thinks that for the first time, he's on a team that might be close to something special.

During the 1990s, Dallas compiled a 101-59 regular-season record with eight playoff appearances, four conference championship games and the aforementioned three Super Bowl titles. Those championship teams yielded three Hall of Famers in quarterback Troy Aikman, running back Emmitt Smith and receiver Michael Irvin. And in the latter half of the decade, the Cowboys added a fourth future Hall of Famer in cornerback Deion Sanders. Twenty-five years later, those players are still a presence in sports media and culture with Irvin and Aikman establishing successful broadcasting careers and Sanders becoming one of the standout personalities in college football. More importantly, the Cowboys are one of professional sports' biggest brands, a American sports team with global popularity along with the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Lakers. Their players, roster moves, successes and failures, and Jones himself are a frequent topic on national sports talk TV and radio, whether they deserve to be or not. The existence of this Netflix docuseries is further proof of that. However, the 1990s Cowboys were certainly the soap opera about which Jones boasts. After buying the team, he fired legendary coach Tom Landry and hired Jimmy Johnson from college football. Johnson revitalized the roster by trading running back Herschel Walker to the Minnesota Vikings for multiple draft picks, including three first-rounders, that provided several impact players. The Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers developed a fierce rivalry. Eventually, tensions grew between Jones and Johnson arguably led to the demise of the franchise's championship prosperity. Irvin and other players were involved in many off-field scandals that made the Cowboys notorious, but also kept them drawing headlines. Still nursing a back injury, Matthew Stafford doesn't join practice with Rams as originally planned
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Quarterback Matthew Stafford did not practice with the Los Angeles Rams on Monday as originally scheduled. The 37-year-old Stafford has yet to practice in training camp or the preseason this summer while dealing with back soreness. Coach Sean McVay said last weekend that Stafford would participate in individual work Monday morning, but Stafford instead attended the practice in street clothes at the Rams' training complex in Woodland Hills. McVay has repeatedly downplayed the severity of Stafford's latest injury, claiming the quarterback could play in games if the Rams were in the regular season. Stafford went through a lengthy workout last Saturday before the Rams' preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys, making roughly 70 throws of all lengths. But the Rams are remaining cautious with their Super Bowl-winning quarterback at the start of his 17th NFL season. Stafford led the Rams to the playoffs in three of his first four seasons on the West Coast. Jimmy Garoppolo is the Rams' backup quarterback. The longer Stafford goes without practicing, the more fans will get concerned, and the more likely it becomes that he will start of clunky in the regular season. This has become one of the more monitored injuries around the NFL, and with good reason. A 37-year-old with a lingering back injury that continues to drag on could completely up-end the Rams' Super Bowl hopes.
