KUALA LUMPUR - The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Sabah has arrested a senior manager of a government-linked company (GLC) on suspicion of soliciting and accepting RM16,000 in bribes in return for securing repair works under the GLC.
According to a source, the male suspect, in his 50s, was detained at 4pm yesterday when he came to the Sabah MACC office to give a statement.
"The suspect is believed to have committed the offence last year and received approximately RM16,000 via several bank transfers into his account.
"The payments were allegedly made as an inducement for securing repair works in several locations across Sabah,' the source said.
Meanwhile, Sabah MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy, when contacted, confirmed the arrest and said the case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009.
He added that the suspect will be brought to the Kota Kinabalu Magistrate's Court tomorrow for a remand application. - BERNAMA

'He promised yesterday (Sunday) to prove his identity at today's press conference. 'But he changed his mind at the last minute and said he had been hospitalised and could not be present,' said MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong. Chong said the man had earlier contacted his office, indicating that he wanted to attend the press conference to clear his name. 'But later, he said he couldn't come due to high blood pressure.' Last Friday, Chong had convened a press conference, saying that he had received six reports from people claiming to have been scammed by a person claiming to be a 'Datuk Seri', who supposedly runs an investment scheme. One victim is said to have lost RM400,000 to the man in question. Another victim is said to be a Datin. Following the exposure, Chong said the individual uploaded a copy of his identity card and related documents on his social media to clear his name. 'He also threatened legal action against me and the Council of Datuk Dato' Malaysia (MDDM),' he told reporters yesterday. However, Chong said they had no intention of apologising. 'If he truly holds the title, he should come forward and prove its authenticity. 'He claims to be a Datuk Seri with the description 'Ahli Istana Anak Angkat' above his name. But is that legitimate?' he asked. Chong also showed a copy of an identity card allegedly of the man's partner, who referred to herself as 'Putri'. He urged others who may have fallen victim to the scam to lodge their own police reports. MDDM president Datuk Samson David Maman said the council had received calls from another two individuals claiming they were deceived by the same person. 'We regularly receive complaints about bogus Datuk or Datuk Seri. We urge the public to verify any such claims through the official Bahagian Istiadat dan Urusetia Persidangan Antarabangsa website,' he said. Datuk Hamzah Limin, the Datuk Lembaga Suku Biduanda Raja Balang Luak Johol, reiterated that traditional titles under the Luak Johol jurisdiction are only valid if recommended by the Datuk Undang Johol and officially conferred by the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan at Istana Besar Seri Menanti. 'Any conferment carried out outside of official state ceremonies – such as in hotels or private venues – is not valid,' he said. Hamzah also warned the public against the misuse of traditional symbols and titles, noting that some individuals have used unauthorised emblems, forged documents and royal-style language such as 'Duli Yang Maha Mulia'. 'No titles such as 'anak angkat', 'puteri' or 'putera' have been issued by the Datuk Undang. The public must remain alert to avoid being misled,' he said.

‘Datuk' dupes trader out of RM100k in Thai cattle scam
JOHOR BARU: A trader lost about RM100,000 after being lured to invest in a cattle rearing project in Thailand by a 'Datuk' businessman. Mazli Hamzah, 37, who has been selling honey for 12 years, said he got to know the man last year during a business networking event. 'In March this year, he called me and asked to meet as he was interested in helping to grow my business, including finding ways to market my product overseas. 'We met frequently after that. Then, he told me about an opportunity to invest in a cattle rearing farm in Thailand. The cows are meant for Hari Raya Haji,' he told reporters yesterday. Mazli said he was initially sceptical about the venture but the 'Datuk', who is in his 40s, brought him to see someone at Menara Tabung Haji here. The two men talked about the cattle rearing project and Mazlin eventually became convinced that the business opportunity was a legitimate deal. 'Earlier this month, I handed the businessman more than RM100,000. Everything was done verbally. 'However, he did provide me with receipt after I gave him the money to invest,' he said. Mazli said his subsequent calls and WhatsApp messages to the 'businessman' went unanswered when he tried to find out about the outcome of his investment. 'I then went to his restaurant in Bandar Dato Onn here and saw him. I called his mobile phone, which he glanced at but he did not answer my call. 'As I walked towards him, he saw me and immediately left his restaurant,' he said. Mazli added that he had since lodged a police report. It is learnt that the businessman was fined RM200,000 by a Sessions Court last year for using a fake Datuk title.

Cops step up manhunt for suspect in Klang shooting incident

South Klang OCPD Supt Kamalariffin Aman Shah said police received a report from a member of the public regarding the incident at 11.15pm on the same day. He said the motive behind the incident is still under investigation. "Police are actively tracing the suspect involved and the case is being investigated under Section 39 of the Arms Act 1960 for the offence of discharging a firearm," he said in a statement Monday (July 28). Members of the public with any information related to the case are urged to contact the South Klang district police headquarters at 03-3376 2222 to assist with the investigation. Earlier, a video claiming a shooting incident had taken place in Taman Sentosa Phase 19, Klang, had gone viral on social media. - Bernama
