Blackpink's Lisa fashion game at the White Lotus premiere

Gulf News13-02-2025
When K-pop sensation Lisa stepped out at the star-studded Los Angeles premiere of The White Lotus Season 3 on Monday, her delicate look channeling an actual lotus flower was an instant fashion win.
Miss Sohee, a label owned by South Korean couture designer Sohee Park, described the bespoke gown Lisa wore on the red carpet as 'a lotus-flower inspired silk chiffon gown, featuring mother-of-pearl effect embroidery adorned with encrusted crystals and pearls, showcasing a stunning ombre transition from brilliant white to yellow.'
The Blackpink star complemented her custom Miss Sohee gown charmingly with a metallic lotus flower she carried in her hand.
For her striking after-party look, she chose a black and white Schiaparelli Fall/Winter 2024 dress accessorized with gold cuffs and earrings from the brand.
Lisa is making her acting debut with Season 3 of the Emmy-winning anthology series The White Lotus , starring as a hotel employee, Mook. She is credited under her full name, Lalisa Manobal, in the series.
The White Lotus Season 3 is set in Thailand and stars Leslie Bibb, Michelle Monaghan and Carrie Coon. It will air on OSN in this region.

Surrealism Revisited: 5 Essential Books to Decode Fashion's Fascination in 2025

As the surreal resurfaces across runways, we round up key coffee table titles to leave your living room a little bit chicer In times of uncertainty, it's only natural that we turn to dreamscapes. History has shown that periods of seismic shifts often bring a renewed appetite for the surreal—narratives that bend reality, embrace the uncanny, and allow us to reimagine the world as we know it. Today, surrealism is living a double life—not only alive in the art world, but reinvented on the runway. From Daniel Roseberry's fantastical Schiaparelli couture, with its golden lungs and cosmic bustiers, to Jonathan Anderson's distorted forms at Loewe and Simon Porte Jacquemus' playful experiments with scale, surrealist language is everywhere. Even Rahul Mishra, with his sculptural embroidery and dreamlike couture, taps into this sensibility—transforming nature into surreal landscapes stitched in gold and silk. What began as a radical art movement in the early 20th century now shapes the way fashion tells stories in 2025. If you've found yourself captivated by this resurgence, the following five books serve as companions for decoding the surrealist threads running through both art and fashion today. 1. Shocking! The Art and Fashion of Elsa Schiaparelli The legacy of surrealism in fashion begins here. This richly illustrated volume explores Elsa Schiaparelli's collaborations with Salvador Dalí and Jean Cocteau, where couture became a canvas for dream logic. Today, Roseberry's revival of the house continues her tradition of the fantastical. View this post on Instagram A post shared by SCHIAPARELLI ARCHIVE (@ 2. Remedios Varo: The Mexican Years – Luis-Martín Lozano While European surrealism often dominates the conversation, Remedios Varo's paintings—full of mysticism, alchemy, and feminine archetypes, offer a different vision. Her work resonates deeply with contemporary fashion's fascination with storytelling and spirituality, from Loewe's ethereal stagings to Jacquemus' dreamlike narratives. View this post on Instagram A post shared by LOEWE (@loewe) 3. Sufism & Surrealism – Adonis In this seminal text, Syrian poet Adonis bridges Islamic mysticism and surrealist poetics, revealing surprising parallels between two traditions of dream, metaphor, and the unseen. For today's global fashion landscape—where Schiaparelli's epic couture resonates strongly with audiences in the Middle East—this book offers a philosophical lens that enriches our understanding of surrealism's universal pull. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Schiaparelli (@schiaparelli) 4. Frankenstein in Baghdad – Ahmed Saadawi Set in post-invasion Baghdad, this award-winning novel tells of a corpse stitched together from war's debris that comes to life. Haunting yet darkly humorous, it mirrors fashion's fascination with fragmentation and reconstruction—recalling Maison Margiela's deconstructive approach, where garments are pulled apart and reassembled into something uncanny and new. Saadawi reminds us that surrealism is not only an aesthetic, but also an allegory for living in fractured times. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Maison Margiela (@maisonmargiela) 5. Magritte: The Treachery of Images – Exhibition Catalogue (LACMA) René Magritte's iconic bowler hats, apples, and pipes continue to inspire designers who thrive on playful distortion. Loewe's balloon heels, Jacquemus' giant handbags, even trompe l'oeil embroidery on Schiaparelli gowns—all are echoes of Magritte's challenge to see the familiar anew. This volume is a visual reminder that the surreal often hides in plain sight. View this post on Instagram A post shared by JACQUEMUS (@jacquemus) Bonus Read: Balenciaga | Kublin (Ana Balda & María Kublin, 2024) Though not explicitly tied to surrealism, this recent release is an exquisite reminder of fashion's ability to construct alternate realities. Showcasing the collaborative work of photographer Tom Kublin and Cristóbal Balenciaga in post-war Paris, the book is filled with rarely seen photographs and film material. If surrealism stretched the imagination through distortion and dream, Balenciaga and Kublin shaped it through pure elegance and precision. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Julen Morrás Azpiazu (@julen_morras_azpiazu) From Fiction to Fashion Surrealism has always thrived on instability, offering a dream logic when reality feels uncertain. Hence it feels so current amid 2025—alive in museums and reborn on the runway. But as the Balenciaga | Kublin volume reminds us, fashion's dialogue with art has never been one-dimensional. Whether through the uncanny visions of Magritte and Varo, the mysticism of Adonis, or the photographic elegance of Kublin, fashion is revealed as more than clothing: it is a stage for the imagination, where art and life constantly intertwine.

Saudi Arabia Strengthens Ties with Korean Content Industry

Saudi Arabia is solidifying its role as a key player in the global content industry, with a focus on the rapidly growing demand for Korean entertainment. The country's recent partnership with South Korea highlights a strategic effort to bolster its creative sector and position itself as the leading creative hub in the Middle East. The K-Content Expo held in Riyadh from July 22 to 24, 2025, served as a significant milestone in this collaboration. Organised by Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in conjunction with the Korea Creative Content Agency, the event attracted over 30 Korean content companies, who engaged in over 400 one-on-one business consultations with representatives from more than 80 regional partners across 12 Middle Eastern nations. The expo, which showcased the best of Korean pop culture, including K-pop, K-dramas, and variety shows, offered Saudi Arabia an opportunity to deepen its ties with the thriving Korean entertainment industry. This partnership comes amid the growing influence of Korean content, especially among younger audiences in the Middle East, who have increasingly become avid consumers of K-pop and related media. ADVERTISEMENT Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, which seeks to diversify the country's economy and reduce its dependence on oil revenues, has increasingly focused on sectors such as entertainment, culture, and tourism. The Kingdom's investment in the creative industries aligns with this long-term strategy and is positioning Riyadh as the region's entertainment capital. Notably, the Kingdom has already made strides to integrate the cultural aspects of South Korean entertainment into its media landscape. Recent collaborations between Saudi broadcasters and Korean content producers have resulted in the airing of popular K-dramas, with plans for further integration of Korean programming into Saudi television channels. The role of Saudi Arabia's state-backed media companies has also been pivotal in driving this initiative forward. These companies are facilitating the import of Korean content while simultaneously promoting local talent. Saudi Arabia's growing production facilities and investments in digital media technologies are creating an ecosystem ripe for the exchange of ideas, talent, and content. The government's investment in the creative sector is not just limited to entertainment. It has also ventured into areas such as gaming, animation, and digital arts, all sectors in which South Korea has a global reputation. Through these joint ventures, Saudi Arabia hopes to create a self-sustaining creative economy that can compete on a global scale. One of the primary objectives of the K-Content Expo was to open new opportunities for collaboration in areas such as co-productions, distribution, and marketing of content. The event saw numerous partnerships solidified between Saudi and Korean businesses, facilitating the exchange of not just media content but also expertise in areas such as production, distribution networks, and digital platforms. ADVERTISEMENT With over 100 million people in the region under the age of 30, the Middle East has become a crucial market for content creators. According to recent reports, the demand for digital entertainment in the region has surged, with younger viewers flocking to streaming platforms to watch content from South Korea and beyond. As the digital space continues to grow, Saudi Arabia is positioning itself to capture a significant portion of this expanding market. One of the standout agreements at the K-Content Expo was the joint initiative between Saudi Arabian streaming platforms and Korean entertainment giants to launch localised K-drama series tailored to the Middle Eastern audience. These series, while maintaining the core characteristics of Korean entertainment, will also incorporate local cultural elements, creating content that resonates with regional tastes and sensibilities. Saudi Arabian officials have been vocal about their ambition to become a creative powerhouse, with plans to further develop infrastructure and offer financial incentives for foreign productions. This push is part of a broader strategy to not only cater to the domestic audience but also to attract international content producers who may see the region as a gateway for entry into the broader Middle Eastern and North African markets. Experts have highlighted the role of such events in expanding bilateral relations and fostering cultural exchange between the two nations. The ongoing collaboration between Saudi Arabia and South Korea is poised to offer new business opportunities, particularly in light of the Kingdom's efforts to develop its entertainment and cultural sectors.
