Sutton has had his best two seasons of his eight-year NFL career under coach Sean Payton, who arrived in Denver in 2023. Sutton caught a career-best 81 passes for 1,081 yards and eight touchdowns last season, his first 1,000-yard campaign since 2019. He had a career-high 10 TD catches the year before.

Sutton, who turns 30 this season, will earn an average of $23 million in his new deal, much more in line with upper-echelon wide receivers across the NFL. His last deal included a $14 million salary for its final year in 2025.

Sutton has been a limited participant in training camp as his agency and the Broncos negotiated the new contract.

After the team's first full-padded practice Monday, Payton said, 'Well, he's gotten reps. He's gotten limited reps. And I think we're … real close on the contract.'

Payton expressed no concern that Sutton hasn't had his full complement of snaps so far with second-year quarterback Bo Nix.

'Not with a veteran like Courtland,' Payton said. 'He's real smart. Here's the deal, he's been participating in all the individual, all the 1-on-1, he's gotten 7-on-7 work, he's gotten team reps. He's just being smart. It would be different if you felt like he was missing improvement or not being out here or just being out here riding the bike or something. I kind of know that player well enough to feel real good about where he's at and his mindset, both mentally and physically.'

Other veterans who are angling for new deals this summer include defensive lineman Zach Allen and rising star linebacker Nik Bonitto.

Notes: Payton said ILB Drew Sanders will be out an estimated six weeks after tearing a ligament in his right foot at practice Saturday. 'The news for us was good news in that it's a ligament in his foot and not a tendon,' Payton said. 'The ligament repair is a much easier one than that of a tendon.' Payton said Sanders hasn't decided yet whether to have surgery or let the ligament heal on its own. Sanders missed most of last season after tearing his left Achilles tendon in the offseason.

On Saturday, Charlie is set to join about 15 to 20 other canine wave riders to vie for top dog in the World Dog Surfing Championships outside San Francisco. The annual contest draws thousands of spectators to Pacifica State Beach. Participating pooches compete against similarly sized peers for a chance to appear in the finals. Additional heats feature multiple dogs surfing tandem on one board and dogs riding tandem with humans. Judges scrutinize how long dogs remain on boards, how long they can hold their balance and whether they perform any tricks like turn around while riding waves. Charlie, aged 10, is due to enter the extra-large single surfer heat. He'll also ride tandem with two other dogs, on what their owners call 'The Dream Team.' 'He loves the crowd,' said his owner, Maria Nieboer. In the ocean, Charlie and Maria's husband, Jeff Nieboer, prepare for waves together. When Jeff sees a good wave, he turns the board around and tells Charlie to 'get ready.' At that signal, Jeff pushes the board forward and Charlie scrunches down and rides the wave as long as he can. He can even steer it, at times leaning on the board to ride toward Maria waiting on shore. He doesn't have to be fed treats for any of this. 'Charlie does what Charlie wants to do once we're in the water,' Jeff said. Contest winners get medals and bragging rights. Charlies 'Dream Team' compatriot, Rosie, will be in four heats. The 4.5-year-old yellow lab's owner, Steve Drottar, said Rosie's 'stoked' after they go surfing, which they do four to five times a week at home in Santa Cruz. 'It's like, hey, we actually did something today, right? We did something together as a team,' Drottar said. 'And the fact that you can do something as a team with your dog creates a different bond than you have when you just take your dog for a walk.' He can tell Rosie feels a sense of accomplishment after surfing because she's extra happy and wags her tail extra hard. She snuggles up to Drottar even more than normal. JOSEPH, Mo. — Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice has 'completely changed' after causing a chain-reaction crash last year on a Dallas highway that left multiple people injured, cost him more than $1 million in a settlement to victims, and resulted in a 30-day jail sentence that he will have to fulfill at some point in the future. Article content Rice spoke Saturday for the first time in training camp, and the first time since the 25-year-old playmaker tore a ligament in his right knee in Week 4 — an injury that wound up requiring season-ending surgery. You have to learn from things like that,' Rice said of the March 2024 accident, when prosecutors said he was driving nearly 120 mph on the North Central Expressway and made 'multiple aggressive maneuvers' before striking the other vehicles. Article content 'I've learned,' Rice continued, 'and taken advantage of being able to learn from something like that.' Article content Rice pleaded guilty in July to two third-degree felony charges of collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury. As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors said, Rice was sentenced to five years of deferred probation and 30 days in jail, along with paying victims' out-of-pocket medical expenses totaling about $115,000.
