Johnny Depp claims he was a ‘crash test dummy' for MeToo movement
Johnny Depp has opened up about his high-profile marriage to Amber Heard and how he believes the #MeToo movement impacted his career.
The Pirates of the Caribbean, 62, star believes he was a 'crash test dummy' for MeToo, which is a social movement against sexual violence and sexual assault, advocating for women specifically to speak out.
Depp was married to the Aquaman actress, 39, between 2015 and 2017. When she filed for divorce, Heard accused him of domestic violence, which led to him being dropped by Disney after 14 years playing Captain Jack Sparrow.
The fallout involved two trials. In the first, Depp took action against The Sun for referring to him as a 'wife-beater', with his 2018 libel suit making it to court in summer 2020 and ending with the court deeming the characterisation to be 'substantially true'.
A further legal battle followed when he successfully sued Heard over an article she wrote for The Washington Post, in which she shared her experiences as a survivor of domestic abuse. Depp's lawyers said this falsely accused the actor himself of being an abuser.
To say the trial was big news would be an understatement, with proceedings streamed live to 3.5million viewers and fans waiting outside court in droves.
In the end, the jury ruled Heard did defame Depp, but Depp also defamed Heard while fighting against her abuse charges.
At the time, Heard said the verdict had 'set back the clock to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated'.
Now, Depp, who claimed Heard was the one who violently abused him, has spoken to The Sunday Times about the public mudslinging and unsettling details of his marriage the public became privy to.
'Look, it had gone far enough,' he replied firmly.
'I knew I'd have to semi-eviscerate myself. Everyone was saying, 'It'll go away!' But I can't trust that. What will go away? The fiction pawned around the f***ing globe? No, it won't.
'If I don't try to represent the truth, it will be like I've actually committed the acts I am accused of. And my kids will have to live with it. Their kids. Kids that I've met in hospitals.
'So the night before the trial in Virginia, I didn't feel nervous. If you don't have to memorise lines, if you're just speaking the truth? Roll the dice.'
Raising his voice and becoming agitated, he acknowledged that 'none of this was going to be easy'.
'But I didn't care,' he declared.
'I thought, 'I'll fight until the bitter f***ing end.' And if I end up pumping gas? That's alright. I've done that before.'
The interviewer probed Depp about the reaction to his and Heard's case, given that someone he had been in love with received much less support and more scrutiny.
'Well, that is the thing,' he began in reply. 'That I had been in love with.' That's where we could start, to look at the roots of 'in love with'.'
Reflecting on his childhood, he detailed: 'Because with regards to how I was raised, I wouldn't say it was a house without love, but it was an intense love, and I would not say that myself, or my siblings, or my pop and mom, experienced any great love or bliss.'
Depp has said he did not live in a happy home, as there were 'many episodes of conflict'.
'So, what were my initial dealings with what we call 'love'? Clearly obtuse.
'And what that means is, if you're a sucker like I am, sometimes you look in a person's eye and see some sadness, some lonely thing, and you feel you can help that person.'
While Depp insists he has 'no regrets about anything' in life, he admits feeling 'hurt' when people whom he trusted did not 'stand up' for him during his trials, accusing them of doing him 'dirty'.
The Willy Wonka actor noted that he is 'weird', but that his 'loyalty is the last thing anybody could question'.
On his involvement in the #MeToo era, Depp said: 'I was pre-MeToo. I was like a crash test dummy for MeToo. It was before Harvey Weinstein. More Trending
'And I sponged it, took it all in. And so I wanted, from the hundreds of people I've met in that industry, to see who was playing it safe.'
'Better go woke!', he hissed.
After being ruled to be a victim of defamation, Depp was awarded approximately $15million (£12m) in damages.
Heard, who announced in May that she had welcomed twin babies, was awarded $2m (£1.5m) in compensatory damages.

Royal Family paid multi-million sum by Marvel so new Avengers superhero movie can be filmed at Windsor Great Park
HOLLYWOOD bosses are paying a king's ransom to film the latest Marvel superhero movie next to Windsor Castle. They are shelling out millions to shoot scenes for Avengers: Doomsday over the summer in Windsor Great Park. 4 4 4 The blockbuster boasts an all-star cast including Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki and Sir Ian McKellan returning as Magneto. King Charles, who is Ranger of Windsor Great Park, is said to have been made aware but is set to be on his Balmoral estate in Scotland during filming. Marvel multiverse movie Avengers: Endgame is the second highest grossing movie of all time, raking in more than £2billion. Marvel Studios, which is owned by Disney, has paid a fortune in location fees to erect its sets next to Windsor Castle in Berkshire — with the money going towards maintaining the park. Windsor Great Park is owned by Crown Estates and the King gets 25 per cent of its annual profits. The exact price tag is not known but a source said: 'Several million pounds is chicken feed to Marvel when their movies make billions. 'But the money will go to the upkeep of Windsor Great Park so the King of course has a keen interest. 'Some of the profits of Crown Estates make their way to the Royal Family so it's a win-win for everyone. 'The Royal Family may even be persuaded to pop by and have a look at Thor in action.' Planning documents estimate up to 300 crew and cast will be on site for filming this summer. Although the scenes to be shot at Windsor and the actors involved in them are being kept under wraps, the files show one set is listed as Luke Cage's House and the other is Annie Reynolds' House. Cage is the alter-ego of Power Man with superhuman strength and unbreakable skin, while Reynolds is thought to be a new character as the mother of Sentry. Our exclusive photos show a 1960s-style US house for Cage that has already been built. 4 The royals are likely to have a keen interest in the blockbuster film. Charles is patron of the British Film Institute and appeared at the premiere of Gladiator II last year. William has been President of Bafta since 2010. In 2023, Wills and Kate took kids George and Charlotte to meet the cast and crew of Lord of the Rings telly spin-off The Rings of Power, being filmed in Ascot. The Princess of Wales has previously revealed Prince Louis' favourite superhero is Marvel character Spider-Man. A spokesman for The Crown Estates did not want to comment.

Iron Maiden's insanely good Run For Your Lives Tour is a hit-packed metal masterclass with mind blowing visuals
Scroll down to see what songs the band played in a set list full of treats for fans MAIDEN HEAVEN Iron Maiden's insanely good Run For Your Lives Tour is a hit-packed metal masterclass with mind blowing visuals Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) METAL greats Iron Maiden have clocked up half a century of heavy-duty music — but still play like rockers a quarter their age. They kicked off the UK leg of their Run For Your Lives world tour on Saturday to mark the band's 50th anniversary. 9 Iron Maiden are celebrating their 50th anniversary but still play like rockers a quarter their age Credit: Olivia Fry - The Sun 9 Bassist Steve Harris keeps the rhythm in front of the sold-out crowd at Birmingham's Utilita Arena Credit: Olivia Fry - The Sun At one point, guitarist Janick Gers — who is two years off 70 — had his foot up on an amp that was higher than his shoulder. Then he was spinning the guitar around his neck before pointing it towards the sold-out crowd at Birmingham's Utilita Arena like a weapon, as bassist Steve Harris provided rhythmic perfection next to him. Eddie, the band's mascot, also put in a shift and was stalking across the stage left, right and centre as the metallers thrashed through their 17-song set. Ahead of the shows, frontman Bruce Dickinson promised fans the concerts would 'put a smile on your face and a cheer in your throat'. And Maiden did that in spades. As I stood shoulder-to-shoulder with head-banging fans of all ages, a shirtless man ran from the sound deck towards the front of the stage and screamed: 'I would die for metal.' And I don't doubt it, as the band whipped the crowd further into a frenzy with tracks including Wrathchild, Number Of The Beast, Powerslave and Two Minutes To Midnight. The set list is packed with proper treats for Maiden fans. The band kicked off the show with Murders In The Rue Morgue, then later played Killers — tracks they haven't performed live since their Ed Hunter Tour 26 years ago. Visually, the show was among the most impressive I've seen recently, opening with the backdrop of the old East London streets some of them grew up in. Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson, 66, comes 13th in elite fencing tournament… only losing to Olympic gold medallist Classics such as Run To The Hills had the crowd screaming so loudly their energy seemed to push the band on more. Bruce then dressed as a prisoner sprinting up a staircase, running from a ghost, while Hallowed Be Thy Name played. Epics such as Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son and Rime Of The Ancient Mariner showcased the group's musicianship, before they kicked off the first song of the encore, Aces High. There were mind-blowing visuals of Spitfire battles blasting around behind them. Vocally, Bruce was on fire. 9 The band's mascot Eddie stalks the stage Credit: Olivia Fry - The Sun 9 The band have sold just over a million tickets for the European leg of their tour Credit: Olivia Fry - The Sun And given he barely stood still, the show was a masterclass for rising stars who can only dream of emulating the energy and talent he has perfected on stage over the decades. As well as roaring rock, the band made a point of paying tribute to their longtime drummer Nicko McBrain, who retired from touring in December. And they took the opportunity to introduce new man Simon Dawson, who thrashed the skins so hard from start to finish I'm amazed he didn't break his kit. Every show on Iron Maiden's UK and Ireland run is sold out, with the band selling just over a million tickets for the European leg. If you're lucky enough to have a seat at one of the shows, strap yourselves in and get ready for the ride of your life. It is insanely good. DANNY IN THE WIGHT MOOD FRESH from his honeymoon in Greece, The Script's Danny O'Donoghue was still on cloud nine ahead of the group's performance at the Isle of Wight Festival. I'm a big history buff and it was gorgeous. 9 The Script's Danny O'Donoghue performing at the Isle of Wight Festival Credit: Shutterstock Editorial 'If I wasn't in the band, I'd be trying to be travelling around anyway.' In our exclusive backstage chat, Danny also said his new sober lifestyle had helped him become a better musician, adding: 'I used to get so nervous at festivals. 'There were just so many famous people around and I thought if I got drunk, I'd find some courage. But that never happened. 'I'd have a few beers and l go into myself and want to leg it from the festival. "Although I've made these changes, very few others have, so I still find people I know asleep under tables at these things.' They were joined at the festival by acts including Stereophonics, Busted, Razorlight, Amy Macdonald and Sting – who was spotted jumping on the ferry with punters to get to the island. Last night, Justin Timberlake, Jess Glynne, Texas and Olly Murs rounded off an epic event. "About ten minutes afterwards my agent rang with the confirmation. "There was a lot of excitement.' Sam revealed he had to be at peak fitness to take on the walking dead, and said: 'Luckily, I'm quite active anyway. 'But we had a week of stunt training and that pretty much trained our endurance.
