Premier League to investigate after Antoine Semenyo reports racist abuse

The Premier League has said it will launch a full investigation after Liverpool's curtain-raiser against Bournemouth at Anfield was halted when visiting forward Antoine Semenyo reported being racially abused by a spectator. Match referee Anthony Taylor stopped play in the 29th minute and spoke with managers Arne Slot and Andoni Iraola before respective captains Virgil van Dijk and Adam Smith were called over to the dug-outs. It has been reported that police officers went into the referee's room at half-time, while an anti-discrimination message was read out to the Anfield crowd. A Premier League statement read: "Tonight's match between Liverpool Football Club and AFC Bournemouth was temporarily paused during the first half after a report of discriminatory abuse from the crowd, directed at Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo. "This is in line with the Premier League's on-field anti-discrimination protocol. "The incident at Anfield will now be fully investigated. We offer our full support to the player and both clubs. "Racism has no place in our game, or anywhere in society. We will continue to work with stakeholders and authorities to ensure our stadiums are an inclusive and welcoming environment for all." Semenyo shared another racist message he had received on his Instagram account, accompanied by the message: "When will it stop……" Merseyside Police said a 47-year-old man was removed from the ground and an investigation was under way after his identity was confirmed. Chief Inspector Kev Chatterton, the match commander for the game, said: "Merseyside Police will not tolerate hate crime of any form. "We take incidents like this very seriously, and in cases like this we will be proactively seeking football banning orders, with the club, against those responsible." The incident comes two days after Tottenham's Mathys Tel received racist abuse online after missing a penalty in his side's UEFA Super Cup win against Paris St Germain. The Football Association said it was "concerned" about the allegation of racism towards Semenyo and that it would ensure "appropriate action" would be taken. A statement from the FA read: "We are very concerned about the allegation of discrimination from an area of the crowd, which was reported to the match officials during the Premier League fixture between Liverpool and Bournemouth. "Incidents of this nature have no place in our game and we will work closely with the match officials, the clubs and the relevant authorities to establish the facts and ensure the appropriate action is taken." After the incident, Semenyo scored twice in the second half to help bring Bournemouth back from two goals down at Anfield before Liverpool went on to eventually win the contest 4-2. Cherries' Adam Smith told Sky Sports News afterwards: "It shouldn't be happening. I don't know how Ant's played on to be honest and come up with those goals. It's totally unacceptable. "Something needs to be done. Taking the knee isn't having an effect. We're supporting him and hopefully he'll be OK. "I wanted him to react because that's what I would have done, but this shows what type of man he is…to come up with those goals showed the type of guy he is. "To be fair the Liverpool players were very supportive as well towards Antoine and the rest of the team. It was handled in the right way but…so angry. "I don't know what else we can do. No one's getting it. I don't know what to say anymore. I just feel for Ant…shocking." Liverpool issued a statement which read: "Liverpool Football Club is aware of an allegation of racist abuse made during our Premier League game against AFC Bournemouth. "We condemn racism and discrimination in all forms, it has no place in society or football. "The club is unable to comment further as tonight's alleged incident is the subject of an ongoing police investigation, which we will support fully."

What Irish TV channel is Wolves vs Man City on? Kick-off time, live stream, team news and odds for Premier League clash

Guardiola's men have been blighted by injuries OPENING DAY What Irish TV channel is Wolves vs Man City on? Kick-off time, live stream, team news and odds for Premier League clash MANCHESTER CITY kick off their pursuit of the Premier League title when they face Wolves this weekend. Pep Guardiola's men are aiming to reclaim the crown that they lost to Liverpool last season, having won it the previous four years in a row. Here is everything you need to know about the match. When is it on and what time is kick-off? Wolves vs Manchester City takes place at the Molineux on Saturday, June 16. Kick-off is at 5:30pm and rounds out the first Saturday of the new season. It also bookends the first full day of TV matches, with Aston Villa vs Newcastle and Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley also being televised. Where can I watch it? The game is being shown on Sky Sports Main Event, with coverage getting underway at 5pm. Those seeking to stream the game can do so through a subscription to NowTV. What is the latest team news? Pep Guardiola said City will be without Josko Gvardiol and Savinho at Wolves on Saturday. Croatian defender Gvardiol joins compatriot Mateo Kovacic on the sidelines, who Guardiola last week said will likely be unavailable until September. Meanwhile, Savinho is set to miss out after picking up an injury in last week's pre-season trip to Palermo. However, he expects Phil Foden and Rodri, who both also sat out the game in Sicily, to travel for the game. As for Wolves, Vitor Pereira revealed Yerson Mosquera is fit enough to feature in the squad but not start against Man City. David Moller Wolfe, who played his first 45 minutes for Wolves against Celta Vigo last weekend, is ready for a competitive debut. Fer Lopez and Jhon Arias also in line for their bows, while, Fabio Silva is still working his way back to fitness and won't feature. What are the odds? Man City are valued at 8/15 to pick up the three points, while Wolves are out to 13/2. The draw is priced at 4/1. What has been said in the build-up? Pep Guardiola has been boosted by the return of Rodri - but insisted he won't rush him back. The Ballon d'Or winner suffered a serious knee injury last September and made one cameo at the end of the last Premier League season. His boss said: 'It's a difficult injury because they say that the year after, you always have some muscular problems, so we try desperately to avoid it but it's difficult to know exactly how many games and minutes he needs. 'He's desperate to play. We need his ambition, his personality, quality. He was named last season the best player in the world. 'That's why it's really important to have him back. To see him back in the locker room made me smile, he's so close. 'He's close to coming back for a few minutes then take one day rest. To read that is what is the most difficult to know what's best for him.'

Diogo Jota tribute ‘powerful' as Liverpool players deal with emotion

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot was pleased with how his players dealt with an emotional night as Anfield remembered Diogo Jota in a 4-2 Premier League opening win over Bournemouth. The Portugal striker died in a car crash with his brother Andre Silva six weeks ago and his family were back at Anfield to see the outpouring of emotion which left Mohamed Salah, scorer of the fourth goal, in tears at the final whistle. 'The main emotion I think should be how impressive and how powerful the tribute for Diogo was,' said Slot. Liverpool manager Arne Slot (centre) stood during a minute's silence in memory of Diogo Jota (Peter Byrne/PA) 'The banner that the Kop showed, the way 'You'll Never Walk Alone' was sung, the way they sung the song for Diogo before the game, in the first minute, after 20 minutes, after the game. It was all so, so impressive and so powerful. 'And then there was even a game that ended in 4-2 where a lot of things happened. 'I actually didn't want to go in after the game because I found it so special, how our fans reacted today. 'I think Mo felt, after the game, how special that was. He probably also felt the emotion because we all knew his (Jota's) family is here, his wife is here, his children are here. That mixed emotions maybe led to Mo being emotional. I think I felt the same without being in tears 'For them, it might be special to hear how much he is loved over here. What the fans did. But we also feel the emotions of how much grief they still have. 'That mixed emotions maybe led to Mo being emotional. I think I felt the same without being in tears, but I definitely felt the same emotions.' On the football front Slot believes Federico Chiesa has a future at the club after the almost-forgotten Italy international came off the bench to score their decisive third goal. The forward, who barely played in his first season after struggling with fitness, volleyed home in the 88th-minute after seeing his team-mates concede a 2-0 lead given to them by new signing Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo. But after Antoine Semenyo, the subject of an isolated incident of alleged racist abuse in the first half, scored twice, fan-favourite Chiesa registered his first Premier League goal, which was followed by a customary opening-day goal for Salah. 'The fans sung for him so many times last season and it is very nice for him to give them something in return. Unbelievable atmosphere in the final minutes,' added Slot on the Italy international, who looked destined for a move this summer. 'He is here at Liverpool and I have no reason to believe it is going to change. He had a hard time last season getting his fitness ready and unfortunately for him, he then missed the Asian tour. 'At 2-2 you need a number nine: I brought him in and he delivered and that is always positive for your future at the club.' Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola praised Semenyo for his reaction to the first-half incident, which saw play halted so referee Anthony Taylor could speak to both managers. 'I didn't notice live but straight away Anthony explained the situation,' he said. 'It is a shame that in the first game of the Premier League, playing a really good game, we have to start talking about these things. 'It is a shame because the news will be about this thing. It is something that is still a big problem and we should be talking about what a good game it has been. He is really, really good at football. — AFC Bournemouth 🍒 (@afcbournemouth) August 15, 2025 'In the heat of the moment I think Antoine understood the situation. He was calm. We asked him if he is OK to continue. 'The head always goes in these things and for sure he is asking why this is happening today. 'Antoine started the season the same way he finished the last one. Different goals, the first more a combination to the left and he arrives well, the second one more he takes it by himself and a good finish.'
