LEWIS FERGUSON is set for a remarkable personal milestone to cap his season when he becomes the first Bologna captain to lead their team out in the Copa Italia final for more than half a century.
The Rossoblu booked their spot in next months' Rome showpiece with a 2-1 second leg win over Empoli which consolidated their 4-0 advantage from the first game.

And there were predictably wild celebrations at the Renato Dall'Ara stadium when it became clear that Bologna would play in the showpiece match of the Italian season for the first time in 51 years.
Their last appearance in the match came back in the 1973-74 season, when they lost on penalties to Palermo after a 1-1 draw.
And they now know they will face Milan in the clash, after the Rossoneri took care of their city rivals Inter in the other semi-final.
The former Aberdeen midfielder didn't get on the pitch on the night but is fit again after the recent injury which cost him the chance to take on Napoli.
And he was right at the heart of the celebrations as Italy international Lorenzo de Silvestri took the megaphone - Kieran Tierney style - to lead the fans on the curva.
Ferguson's future has been a source of some intrigue - despite the fact his current contract runs for another three years and his immediate future at Vincenzo Italiano's team is secure.
Serie A rivals Napoli, where Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour are helping put together a remarkable title challenge, are believed to be massive admirers while Juventus have been keen in the past.
In an interview with transfermarkt.co.uk Ferguson said: 'I'm happy here and if we are playing in the Champions League then of course I would be happy to stay here.
'Also, if not, it's a beautiful place and a great club who's given me a lot. So I'm really happy here.
"There was interest last summer. There'll be interest again at some point.
Bologna fans leave emotional message to Lewis Ferguson ahead of knee surgery
"That's just the way football goes. That's the nature of the game.
"And let's say you never know what's going to happen in the future.'

Rangers warned Club Brugge could dish out Champions League 'pasting' as ex Ibrox man points to one worrying issue

Russell Martin's side have conceded over 100 shots on goal in their six games this season Rangers' deficiencies at the back could see their Champions League ambitions get ended in devastating style against Club Brugge, according to one former Ibrox defender. ‌ Despite their 3-0 advantage from the first leg, Russell Martin 's men had a nervy night in the Czech Republic on Tuesday night, falling to a 2-1 defeat, and were it not for keeper Jack Butland, things would have got a lot more close for comfort. ‌ The Light Blues have had over 100 shots against them in six matches in all competitions, with both of their clean sheets coming at home in the Champions League. ‌ Gers already trail Celtic in the Premiership by four points after drawing their first two games and in the view of ex full back Richard Foster - they could be on the end of a hiding by Belgian outfit Brugge that will consign them to the Europa League for another season. Speaking on GO Radio, he said: "I think they could get a pasting. "If you give a team of the quality of Brugge those kind of chances, they'll score four of them. "That then puts a whole different dynamic on the way Rangers are playing under Russell Martin. "Against Panathinaikos I felt they gave up too many opportunities and had to rely on Jack Butland, which is fine as he's a goalkeeper and it's his job to make saves. ‌ "But at some point, some teams are going to score more of those chances than miss. "Rangers could be on the end of a pasting and that's why I think they will struggle against Brugge." Boss Martin admitted in the wake of their progression in Plzen that his side needs to up their game if they want to get past the final qualification hurdle. ‌ He stated: "If we don't show a bit more care and quality on the ball, I think we will struggle against anyone. "I'm disappointed we lost and I'm disappointed with how many chances we gave up. I think so much of it comes from just being so loose with the ball. "We were playing against a team who had nothing to lose, who really committed so many numbers, four on the top line, with a heavy press. "We played through the press a lot in the first half, got into their final third a lot, then just turned the ball over."

Brendan Rodgers says what every Celtic fan thinks as Champions League playoff fate confirmed

The Parkhead boss reacted to the Hoops landing a trip to Kazakhstan to face Kairat Almaty Brendan Rodgers admits Celtic's gruelling 13-hour trek to Kazakhstan is far from ideal. ‌ The Hoops have been paired with Kairat Almaty for a place in the Champions League group stages. ‌ Celts host the Kazakh cracks at Parkhead next Wednesday before an exhausting 9,000-mile round-trip to Almaty the following Tuesday - five days before the first derby of the season at Ibrox. ‌ And Rodgers confessed he'd have preferred a short hop to Slovakia to play old foes Slovan Bratislava, who lost out to Kairat on penalties. He told Celtic TV: 'Of course, everyone would have preferred a shorter travelling distance, but they got through, they won the tie, so we'll play the first game of our two legs and our objective is to get through. 'We can really analyse them now and be prepared for the first leg next week." Celtic last faced Kazakhstan Premier League opposition when they survived a nervy fightback against Astana in 2017. The Hoops almost blew a 5-0 home lead by falling 4-1 behind in the Kazakh capital before two late goals settled the nerves. The Scottish champions eventually progressed 8-4 on aggregate but Rodgers recalled it was far from straightforward. ‌ He said: "No, it wasn't. It should never have been the case, but it's how football works. "Yeah, 5-0 in the first leg, we were very good. At half-time in the second leg, I think it was 6-1, it was one each at half-time. "So you're in a really good place and then before you know it, you've conceded three quick goals and then the tie's at 6-4. ‌ "So we'll do everything we can to make sure we get into the group stages." Skipper Callum McGregor played that night and experience tells him it's crucial Celtic make home advantage count next week. ‌ He said: 'It's going to be a tough tie. Obviously the travel and everything else comes into that and the preparation. 'We've got the home game first, and we want to try and maximise that, as we would against any opponent. "But it could be even more important now that we try and do the absolute maximum to get a good result at home, and then negotiate the travel. 'It's a tough team and we know it will be a tough tie. It's a good tie for us but one that we'll have to be at our best to get through. "The travel and everything else that presents, it will be a tough tie, no doubt about it. "So we'll have to go there. Hopefully, we have a lead from the first game, but we have to look after that first and foremost and then over the two legs, can we do enough to get through?"

Liverpool transfers: £35m deal approved by legendary manager - 'I'm convinced'

Liverpool are still busy in the transfer market and could add two new defenders to Arne Slot's squad before the month is over with a legendary figure in football approving one deal Iconic Italian manager Arrigo Sacchi has given his seal of approval to Liverpool's move for Parma defender Giovanni Leoni. The 79-year-old has tipped the teenage star to continue his rise if he completes a transfer to Anfield and tipped him to become the future of their national team. ‌ Mirror Football reported on Tuesday that the Reds want to sign Leoni and Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi to bolster their defence. The 18-year-old is expected to cost around £35million despite being a newcomer to first team foootball. ‌ Liverpool have targeted a young defender in recent times as they attempt to have a smooth succession in their backline with the likes of Virgil van Dijk already in his thirties. Lenny Yoro, Jorrel Hato and Dean Huijsen have all previously been linked to the club. ‌ Towering defender Leoni now looks set to be that figure and is highly regarded by one of the most lauded managers in footbal history in Sacchi. And the veteran coach provided an overwhelming enforsement of the player's talents. Sacchi, who is frustrated to not see a top Italian side make a move for Leoni, believes that the young defender will be a success for Liverpool and Italy. The legendary AC Milan boss is unconcerned by the youngster's lack of first team football. "We'll see if the deal goes through, but in any case, I'd say the Reds would be making a great move by signing this young man, whom I followed with interest and curiosity in the second half of last season,' Sacchi wrote in Gazzetta Dello Sport. "I'm convinced he'll be the lynchpin of the Azzurri defence for a long time. "Some, regarding a possible transfer to Liverpool, object that this young man has only made 17 Serie A appearances so far. Aren't those few? No, I reply. Not few, because on those occasions Leoni has demonstrated the qualities needed to go far. ‌ "If someone is good, if someone has their head in the right place, it's immediately obvious. A person can have 200 Serie A games under their belts and still not possess the qualities Leoni displayed in his first season as an adult. Talent knows no age. "Let's also give him the opportunity to make mistakes. At eighteen, some mistakes are expected and can be forgiven. And in any case, Leoni won't make many. He's a tough guy who's already learned the fundamental lesson, keep your head down and work hard." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
