Stir threatened in ‘neglected' Manipur district
GUWAHATI
A village authority representing the people of Noney, the headquarters of Manipur's Noney district, has threatened a mass agitation against the infrastructural and administrative negligence in the Naga-dominated district.
In a memorandum to Manipur's Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on May 3, the Longmai Village Authority set a 10-day deadline for the State government to ensure a series of projects promised to Noney when it was carved out of the Tamenglong district in 2016. The deadline expired on May 12.
'We have been compelled to go ahead with a democratic form of mass agitation after not receiving an affirmative response within the 10 days from the date of submission of our 15-point memorandum,' Kasaigai Gangmei, the chairman of Longmai Village Authority, said.
Locals often refer to Noney, about 63 km west of the State's capital, Imphal, as Longmai.
According to the village authority, the district administration is functioning without proper infrastructure and subordinate staff. It claimed projects such as the prefab field district hospital at Longmai have not moved after their foundation stones were laid over the past few years.
Some of the projects that have not taken off include the Eklavya Model Residential School at Duibansui, the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya at Noney, the Industrial Training Institute at Noney, and a cold storage at a suitable location.
The village authority also said the offices of most of the departments have not been opened in the district yet. Apart from Mr. Gangmei, the memorandum was signed by the Longmai Village Authority's secretary, Gailanchung Kamei, and Longmai Customary Court functionaries Keineshong Gonmei and Gongjai Kamei.

Rajya Sabha Polls: Kamal Haasan, P Wilson Among Candidates As DMK, AIADMK File Nominations
Quick Read Summary is AI generated, newsroom reviewed. Candidates from DMK and AIADMK, including Kamal Haasan, filed nominations for Tamil Nadu's Rajya Sabha elections. DMK's nominees focus on social representation, while tensions rise within AIADMK over seat allocations amid upcoming elections. Chennai: In a significant political development, candidates from both the ruling DMK and opposition AIADMK - including actor-politician Kamal Haasan - filed their nominations today for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections from Tamil Nadu. The DMK has fielded four candidates, with sitting MP and senior advocate P Wilson nominated for a second term. Internationally acclaimed poet Rokiah Malik, popularly known as Salma, and former MLA Sivalingam from Salem have also been nominated. As part of its alliance with Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), the DMK has allotted one Rajya Sabha seat to Kamal Haasan, marking his formal elevation to the upper house of Parliament. The choices are aimed at the 2026 assembly elections. Two of the DMK's nominees come from minority communities - Wilson, a Christian, is well known for securing major legal wins for the party, including orders enabling the burial of former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi along Marina Beach and the recent court ruling limiting gubernatorial interference in state affairs. Salma, from the Muslim community, is a celebrated feminist writer and literary figure, whose nomination underscores the DMK's continued focus on social representation. Sivalingam, the third DMK candidate, is from the AIADMK-dominated western belt, and is seen as a strategic choice aimed at strengthening the party's foothold in that region - particularly after the DMK managed to win only one of the eleven assembly seats in Salem, in 2021. Kamal Haasan's nomination comes as part of the DMK-MNM alliance that was formalised ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Responding to criticism for aligning with the DMK - a party he once vocally opposed - Haasan said, "This is the need of the hour," citing the importance of uniting opposition forces against the BJP. Meanwhile, the AIADMK has named two candidates - Inbadurai, the head of its legal wing and a Christian from the influential Nadar community in southern Tamil Nadu and M Dhanapal, a former MLA from a Scheduled Caste background. However, tensions appear to be simmering within the AIADMK-led alliance. The DMDK, led by Premalatha Vijayakanth, has expressed discontent over being denied a Rajya Sabha seat, despite claiming it was assured one. While AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami dismissed speculation, insisting "all is fine," Premalatha hinted at uncertainty, stating the DMDK would announce its alliance decision "later."

Rajya Sabha Race: Kamal Haasan, P Wilson Among Candidates Filing Nominations Today
Quick Read Summary is AI generated, newsroom reviewed. Actor-politician Kamal Haasan and nominees from DMK and AIADMK will file Rajya Sabha nominations today, ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu elections. The DMK has fielded diverse candidates, while AIADMK faces internal rifts over alliance issues. Chennai: Actor-politician Kamal Haasan, along with key nominees from both the DMK and AIADMK, will file nominations today for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections from Tamil Nadu, marking a significant political development ahead of 2026 Tamil Nadu elections. The ruling DMK has fielded four candidates, including renominated Rajya Sabha MP and senior advocate P Wilson, award-winning Tamil writer and poet Rokiah Malik alias Salma, and former MLA Sivalingam. In line with its alliance with the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), the DMK has also allotted one seat to Kamal Haasan's party, which has nominated the actor himself. P Wilson, a Christian, is widely regarded for steering the party through crucial legal battles - including the Supreme Court victory against the Tamil Nadu Governor and the landmark ruling that allowed the burial of former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi along the Marina Beach. Salma, a Muslim, is an internationally acclaimed voice in Tamil literature, whose nomination underscores the DMK's attempt to represent minorities and women. Sivalingam, a former MLA from Salem district, represents the DMK's outreach to the AIADMK-dominated western Tamil Nadu - a region crucial to expanding its base. Kamal Haasan's nomination, meanwhile, is the result of a growing alliance with the DMK that was sealed during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Responding to criticism over his ideological shift - having once opposed the DMK - Kamal Haasan said, "This is the need of the hour," referring to the broader effort to unite non-BJP forces. On the other side, the opposition AIADMK has nominated Inbadurai, the head of its legal wing and a Christian from the powerful Nadar community, and M Dhanapal, a former MLA from a Scheduled Caste background. However, the nomination process hasn't been without controversy. AIADMK ally DMDK has expressed its disappointment over not being allocated a Rajya Sabha seat, despite its claim of prior assurances. While AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami sought to downplay the rift, saying, "All is fine," DMDK chief Premalatha Vijayakanth hinted at a possible review of alliances, saying the party would announce its decision "later". With the opposition AIADMK reviving ties with the BJP, the ruling DMK that aims for a consecutive has to deal with the electoral debut by actor Vijay's TVK as well.
