Student group launches campaign calling for release of detained activists
KOTA KINABALU: Student group Suara Mahasiswa UMS has launched the #SABAH3 campaign, calling for the immediate release of three activists recently detained under the Sedition Act 1948.
The campaign follows the arrest of their leader Muhamad Fadhil Muhamad Kasim, member Aliff Danial Badrul Akmal Hisham, and local activist Sabir Syarifuddin.
In a statement posted on Instagram on Tuesday (June 24), Suara Mahasiswa UMS claimed that the three were wrongly detained for their involvement in the recent Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 rally.
They stated that the two UMS undergraduates were arrested at the Kota Kinabalu District Police headquarters when they went to lodge a report after acid was allegedly splashed on Fadhil's car.
'We strongly reject this abuse of power and demand that the authorities release all three activists immediately.
"This is why we are launching the #SABAH3 campaign, to mobilise public support,' they said in a post.
They also criticised Kota Kinabalu district police chief Asst Comm Kasim Muda for initially denying the arrests, calling it misleading to the media and public.
The Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 protest, held over June 21–22, saw students gather peacefully to protest against corruption and unresolved water problems on campus, but escalated into controversy when some demonstrators burnt caricatures of the Prime Minister on the final day.
Meanwhile, Parti Warisan legal adviser Chin Tek Ming, who was also summoned by police in connection with the rally, voiced support for the students and their cause.
In a statement on Tuesday (June 24), he confirmed giving a statement to the authorities earlier but clarified that he was not present during the caricature-burning incident.
While he did not condone the burning of placards, he stressed that the students felt they had no avenue left to pursue.
Earlier, Anwar advised that UMS students involved in the recent Gempur Rasuah 2.0 rally should not face expulsion.
According to Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, Anwar acknowledged the students may have made a mistake but stressed that their education and future should take priority.
This follows an earlier statement by UMS Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor that 13 students could face disciplinary action under the Universities and University Colleges Act 2012, which may include suspension or expulsion.

Anwar also raised the issue of Gaza and Palestine, calling on Israel to end its aggression, occupation and genocide. "Malaysia calls for the safety and justice of the people of Gaza, who have long suffered under such cruelty. "They continue to endure hardship due to the failure of the international community to uphold basic human rights and the hypocrisy shown by many Western countries in responding to the atrocities inflicted on the Palestinians." Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening trade and investment in areas of mutual interest, including agriculture, precious metals and mining, electrical and electronics, industrial goods, machinery and equipment, chemicals, processed food and textiles. They stressed the importance of enhanced agency-to-agency cooperation in boosting trade and exports between the two nations. Earlier this morning, Zhaparov was accorded an official welcoming ceremony at Perdana Putra for his two-day working visit to Malaysia. He arrived at 9am and was greeted by Anwar.

Anwar: Malaysia to offer Islamic banking, halal expertise to Kyrgyzstan
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia is ready to offer its expertise in Islamic banking and the halal industry to Kyrgyzstan to help develop more comprehensive facilities and services, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said his discussions with Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov focused on establishing an Islamic bank to strengthen the financial system. "Of course, we discussed Islamic banking, halal matters, construction, finance, and related programmes, including the proposal to establish an Islamic bank. "There will be follow-up meetings between our ministers. You (Zhaparov) have brought key ministers to Malaysia, and my ministers will respond accordingly," he said at a joint press conference at Kompleks Seri Perdana today. Anwar said the strategic cooperation was essential not only to strengthen understanding and friendship but also to ensure that bilateral trade, investment programmes and projects continue to progress. He added that Malaysia and Kyrgyzstan had also agreed to explore the Halal Cooperation Action Plan proposed by Zhaparov. "This matter will be explored more thoroughly. Undoubtedly, Kyrgyzstan has strong capabilities in hydropower, green energy, and renewable energy – areas in which Malaysia is very interested to understand, study, and benefit from." He also said Malaysia and Kyrgyzstan had agreed to enhance cooperation in education and research, with a focus on strengthening people-to-people ties and expanding the social and economic potential of both countries. As part of this effort, Anwar said Malaysia would provide technical and educational assistance to the people of Kyrgyzstan through the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP). Malaysia, Kyrgyz Republic to boost halal, Islamic banking
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and the Kyrgyz Republic have agreed to work together in developing Islamic banking and boosting trade in halal products, with Malaysia offering its expertise in both sectors to help develop relevant facilities and services in Kyrgyz Republic. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said during his meeting with President Sadyr Zhaparov, both leaders also discussed setting up Islamic banks to create better financial systems. 'Of course, we discussed the issue of Islamic banking, halal, construction, financial arrangements and programmes, including the setting up of Islamic banks. 'There will be follow-up meetings by our ministers. You (Zhaparov) have brought key ministers to Malaysia, and my colleagues will certainly respond to that, more in terms of securing better understanding and friendship, but also to ensure that the bilateral programmes and projects in terms of trade investments can continue.' Anwar said this at a joint press conference with Zhaparov at Seri Perdana here today. As part of bilateral partnership, Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said Malaysia and the Kyrgyz Republic also agreed to explore the halal cooperation action plan proposed by Zhaparov.
