Thrissur Pooram fiasco: Top cop to submit report soon, ADGP refutes charges

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: State Police Chief Shaik Darvesh Saheb, who conducted an inquiry to ascertain whether any lapses by ADGP M R Ajith Kumar led to the disruption of the 2024 Thrissur Pooram, will file his report before the government soon.
Shaik, who is set to retire on June 30, will file the report within two weeks, sources said. As part of the probe, he recorded Ajith's statements last week. The ADGP has refuted the allegations of lapses. Sources said he told the police chief that he had ensured all measures for the safe conduct of Pooram and the junior officers failed in their duty to execute the action plan.
Sources said Ajith also rejected the accusation that he wilfully chose not to respond to calls made by Minister P Rajan when the Pooram fiasco took place. He said he was in touch with the minister until 10.30pm and after that he went to sleep.

Fix parking locations first, penalise later: Operators

1 2 Nagpur: Private bus operators on Wednesday claimed that despite guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule's direction to finalise locations for park and pay within seven days inside the city limits, the traffic police took action against them, including the detention of their buses. "The issue of private bus operators needing a proper location for pick-up, drop-off, and parking has been ongoing for the last 30 to 35 years. During this period, we wrote multiple letters to concerned authorities, yet no steps were taken, and now the traffic police have issued this diktat," said Baba Dawre, President of the Travels Association of Nagpur, while addressing the media. The operators claimed that they run 'public service vehicles' which cater to the general public. As per section 177 of the Motor Vehicle Act, it is the duty of the local body and the govt to provide them with designated spots. "In every country, passengers are picked up from footpaths. We asked the police department to demarcate places for us on roads from where we can pick up and drop off passengers. If the police give us a spot for four vehicles and if the fifth vehicle stands on the road, then they should take action. Consensus should be found on the issue rather than taking action against us directly," said secretary of the association, Mahendra Lulley, adding that private operators who pay lakhs of rupees in tax every year still face discrimination. The operators also claimed that Bawankule gave seven days to officials to find locations inside the city where they can pay and park, but still, police took action against them. "The ADGP (traffic) issued an order last month that private buses picking up or dropping off passengers at a spot should not face no-parking action from the police. The notification of DCP (traffic) is in complete violation of ADGP's order," said a bus operator. They urged officials to stop the harassment and instead come up with a solution to resolve the issue. The operators also agreed that in some instances, their vehicles cause traffic jams. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Nimisha Priya forum seeks action against evangelist Paul

The Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council, a body that coordinates the efforts for the release of Nimisha Priya from a Yemen jail, has appealed to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to take action against evangelist K.A. Paul for allegedly collecting money for the release of the Keralite nurse. The council has accused Mr. Paul of soliciting donations through a bank account purportedly started by the External Affairs Ministry, claiming that ₹8.3 crore was needed to free Nimisha Priya. The External Affairs Ministry has clarified that it is not conducting any official fundraising for Nimisha Priya's release and warned against spreading false information in the government's name. In a memorandum to the Chief Minister and the State Police Chief, Subhash Chandran K.R., legal adviser to the action council, expressed concern that more than 54,000 subscribers had already viewed Mr. Paul's alleged X post seeking funds for Nimisha Priya's release. Meanwhile, All India Jamiyyathul Ulama general secretary Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar clarified that he had done everything possible to secure a reprieve from execution for Nimisha Priya. 'The ball is now in the Central government's court,' he said, adding that the government should take the initiative to secure her release from prison and that his organisation would provide all possible help. Initially set to be executed on July 16, Nimisha Priya's sentence was postponed by Yemeni authorities on July 14, and subsequently commuted. The action council has asked the Union government to utilise Mr. Aboobacker Musliyar's connections with Yemeni scholars to initiate talks with Talal Abdo Mahdi's family, whose murder Nimisha Priya has been convicted of. Mr. Paul is one of the persons who claimed credit for securing reprieve for Nimisha Priya from execution. Mr. Paul has refuted allegations of fraud through a series of posts on X. He also challenged the government's claim that the bank account in question was not government designated. Mr. Paul also demanded that the funds required for Nimisha Priya's release be paid from the Prime Minister's account.

CPI signals that any move to appeal against special court verdict in ADGP corruption case warrants discussion in LDF

The Communist Party of India (CPI) has signalled that any move to appeal against the special court's 'damning repudiation' of the controversial Vigilance report exonerating the former Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) [ADGP] M.R. Ajith Kumar from illegal amassment of wealth charges warranted a political discussion in the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF). Expressing serious reservations about Mr. Ajith Kumar's conduct, CPI State secretary Binoy Viswam said the ruling alliance could ill-afford to take consequential determinations by 'belittling' the party's stated position on the matter. Speaking to reporters in Alappuzha, Mr. Viswam said that Mr. Ajith Kumar's 'many actions were not advisable for a high-ranking officer of law.' He criticised Mr. Ajith Kumar's 'repeated clandestine intriguing' with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's (RSS) top leadership. Thrissur Pooram row Mr. Viswam accused Mr. Ajith Kumar of spurning several calls from Revenue Minister K. Rajan to ensure that the 2024 Thrissur Pooram celebrations did not go awry. He said an entitlement mentality among certain IPS and IAS officers was inadvisable as it was anti-constitutional and anti-people. KPCC seeks CM's resignation Meanwhile, the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) ramped up its demand for Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's resignation in the wake of the special court judgment, which, it claimed, was an incriminating indictment of the Chief Minister's Office (CMO). KPCC president Sunny Joseph, MLA, told a press conference in Kannur that the unlawful decision to absolve Mr. Ajith Kumar and the Chief Minister's political secretary P Sasi, both respondents in the corruption case, had Mr. Vijayan's imprimatur. 'The court had called out the sham of an investigation by observing that a superpower authority controlling the Vigilance had silently intruded to subvert the probe. The condemnatory observation is a unambiguous allusion to Mr. Vijayan's subversive role in the case,' Mr. Joseph said. Mr. Joseph alleged that Mr. Vijayan was constrained to shield Mr. Ajith Kumar because the officer was the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)]-RSS go-between. 'The officer had stacked the odds in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in the Thrissur constituency by derailing the Thrissur Pooram to harness Hindu majoritarian resentment in the Sangh Parivar's favour,' he added.
