State media Xinhua reported Xi describing bilateral relations as at an 'all-time high'.
Both leaders agreed on the importance of multilateral forums like the G20 and BRICS.
They pledged deeper cooperation in health, energy, digital economy, and satellite technology.
Brazil remains a key soy exporter to China, which faces US pressure to diversify suppliers.
Trump recently urged China to increase soybean imports from the US to balance trade.
Lula visited China in May, rejecting Cold War divisions while seeking stronger regional ties.
China has overtaken the US as Brazil's top trading partner in recent years.
Two-thirds of Latin American nations now participate in China's Belt and Road Initiative.
The leaders also addressed climate change and the Ukraine conflict during their hour-long discussion. - AFP

MR DIY quarterly revenue hits RM1.2bil

PETALING JAYA: MR DIY Group (M) Bhd – now with over 1,500 stores countrywide – expects no material impact on its business operations despite ongoing market volatility stemming from geopolitical tensions, tariff adjustments and changes to domestic policies, including the revised sales and service tax and the 2% Employees Provident Fund contribution for foreign workers. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, the homegrown retailer said it will continue to expand its retail footprint in 2025 by launching new stores across its core and sub-brands. 'The group remains focused on delivering long-term, sustainable value to stakeholders through strategic investments in growth and technology to enhance operational efficiency,' it noted. In the second quarter ended June 30, 2025 (2Q25), MR DIY opened 31 new stores, bringing its total to 1,502 – up 12.1% year-on-year (y-o-y). Thanks to the expansion, MR DIY saw its topline inch up by 1.5% to RM1.21bil during the quarter from RM1.2bil in 2Q24. 'This growth came off a high base in 2Q24, which had benefited from the Hari Raya festive season,' the group noted. Net profit for the quarter under review was up 2.2% to RM158.58mil from RM155.21mil in 2Q24, on the back of higher revenue and improved margin. Gross profit margin climbed 2.2 percentage points to 47.7%, aided by lower average inventory costs following the ringgit's strengthening against the US dollar and Chinese yuan. Additionally, MR DIY said total transactions during the quarter rose 5% y-o-y to 48.5 million. But this, it said, was offset by a 3.3% decline in average basket size, mainly due to fewer items per transaction. Furthermore, administrative and other operating expenses rose 9.7% and 9.9% y-o-y to RM53.4mil and RM309.9mil, respectively, reflecting higher staff costs from the minimum wage revision effective Feb 1, 2025, as well as increased utility costs and asset depreciation in line with store expansion. For the first half of its financial year 2025 (1H25), MR DIY's revenue rose 5.7% to RM2.47bil from RM2.34bil in the previous corresponding period, also thanks to an expanded store network. Furthermore, total transactions for the half grew 7% y-o-y to RM96.7mil, partially offset by a 1.2% y-o-y decline in average basket size. Net profit for 1H25 rose 10.9% to RM332.73mil from RM300.09mil in 1H24, while gross profit margin improved to 47.8% from 45.7% in the previous corresponding period. Administrative and other operating expenses increased by 13.7% and 10.8% y-o-y, respectively. On top of that, the group declared a dividend of 1.5 sen per share for 2Q25, totalling RM142.1mil or 89.6% of profit after tax. This brings total dividends for 1H25 to 2.9 sen per share, up from 2.2 sen in the previous corresponding period. Shares of MR DIY rose one sen, or 0.63%, to close at RM1.60 yesterday.

Serbia cuts 2025 GDP forecast to 2.75 pct on weaker agriculture, uncertainty

BELGRADE, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Serbia's central bank has lowered its 2025 GDP growth forecast to 2.75 percent from previous projection of 3.5 percent in May, citing a poor agricultural season and reduced investor confidence. National Bank of Serbia (NBS) Governor Jorgovanka Tabakovic said second-quarter growth was weaker than expected, with early data showing lower wheat and fruit output and smaller sown areas for autumn crops. "Unfavourable weather conditions, first frost in spring and then extreme heat and drought in June, significantly reduced yields of many fruit crops, whose prices recorded a sharp increase," Tabakovic said at the presentation of the August Inflation Report on Wednesday. The NBS expects activity to accelerate in the second half of the year, supported by further growth in the automotive industry, higher exports, and infrastructure projects under the "Leap into the Future - Serbia Expo 2027" program. Announced by President Aleksandar Vucic in January 2024, the program involves an investment of 17.8 billion euros (about 20.8 billion U.S. dollars) over the next three and a half to four years for projects across the country, including preparations for Expo 2027. The NBS also projected growth of 4-5 percent in 2026 and 2027, with the upper range likely in 2027 due to the Expo's boost to services and net exports. Inflation rose to 4.9 percent in July from 4.6 percent in June, driven by higher unprocessed food and oil prices. The bank expects it to stay near the upper bound of its target range through year-end before easing in 2026. Economic growth in the second quarter stood at 2.0 percent year-on-year, supported by services and manufacturing but offset by declines in construction and energy. In the first half of the year, exports rose 10.8 percent year-on-year, led by automotive-related manufacturing, while imports grew 11.4 percent on higher purchases of raw materials and consumer goods. The current account deficit reached 4.7 percent of GDP, with foreign direct investment inflows of 1.5 billion euros, down 40 percent from the same period last year but expected to strengthen in the second half.

Kenyan hosts summit to push for science-led solution to climate crisis in Africa

NAIROBI, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Kenya held a forum on Wednesday in the national capital of Nairobi for senior policymakers, scholars, and green campaigners to push for science-led interventions aimed at mitigating the climate crisis in Africa. More than 500 delegates attended the forum to discuss the green transition ahead of the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change slated for Belem, Brazil, on Nov. 10-21. Ali Mohamed, climate envoy in Kenya's Office of the President, urged scholars to provide evidence and training to bridge the gap between science, policy, and community action in managing climate change on the continent. He noted that industrial and energy policy roadmaps should start embracing internal knowledge as opposed to borrowing ideas from outside the continent, adding that most of the time, foreign ideas embed assumptions misaligned with African realities and aspirations. Mohamed said Kenya, in collaboration with its partners, is rapidly emerging as a hub for innovation, with enterprises focusing on clean cooking solutions and e-mobility. "These innovators are not only accelerating access to clean cooking and clean transport, but are also strengthening local manufacturing, building homegrown industries, and creating thousands of jobs for Kenya's youth," Mohamed said. Laban Ayiro, vice chancellor of Daystar University, a Nairobi-based private university, said academia has an opportunity to make milestones in the global climate agenda by bridging the gap between research and society. He called on scholars and the private sector to forge partnerships that transcend silos and elevate indigenous knowledge, while offering solutions to climate emergencies devastating the African continent.
