Hong Kong woman selling electric toothbrush online loses HK$800,000 in scam

A Hong Kong woman trying to sell an electric toothbrush on a popular online marketplace fell victim to a scam that cost her HK$800,000 (US$102,370).
The victim, a 38-year-old living on Bonham Road in the Mid-Levels, had listed the item on Carousell and was approached by a supposed buyer expressing interest.
The buyer claimed the payment would be completed online and a link was provided for the transaction.
The seller clicked the link and followed the instructions and later realised HK$800,000 had been withdrawn from her account without her authorisation.
She reported the incident to police on Monday.
The case is being handled by the Western district investigation team.

Hong Kong summons Australian and British consuls over ‘harbouring criminals'

Hong Kong's No 2 official has summoned the Australian and British consuls-general to express strong opposition to their countries 'harbouring criminals' after both granted asylum to two activists allegedly endangering national security who have absconded overseas. Advertisement The government announced in the early hours of Tuesday that Chief Secretary Eric Chan Kwok-ki summoned Australian Consul-General Gareth Williams and British Consul-General Brian Davidson respectively on Monday afternoon. Secretary for Security Chris Tang Ping-keung also attended the meeting. The meeting took place days after fugitive former lawmaker Ted Hui Chi-fung, who lives in Adelaide, and activist Tony Chung Hon-lam, based in London, announced separately on their social media accounts last weekend that they had been granted asylum by the governments of Australia and the UK. A government spokesman quoted Chan on Tuesday as saying that such harbouring effectively allowed certain individuals or organisations to be immune from legal consequences for their illegal acts, which is 'no different' from granting a special privilege to break the law. Tony Chung announced on social media that he had been granted asylum in the UK. Sister of wanted Hong Kong activist Chin Po-fun taken for questioning by police

Hong Kong national security police have taken away the sister of wanted activist Chin Po-fun to 'assist with an investigation', the Post has learned, marking the second time a relative of a fugitive has been summoned following the latest round of bounties. A source said officers asked Chin's sister to go to Tuen Mun police station, adding that the questioning was expected to be completed around 12pm on Tuesday. Chin is among 15 activists who were each slapped with a HK$200,000 (US$25,570) bounty last month for their involvement in an overseas election organised in May by 'Hong Kong Parliament', which authorities have deemed subversive and accused of violating the Beijing-imposed security law. The force also issued arrest warrants for the activists. Chin Po-fun left Hong Kong in March 2022. Photo: Handout The group was founded by self-exiled activists Elmer Yuan Gong-yi, Victor Ho Leung-mau, Fok Ka-chi and Choi Ming-da, who police issued HK$1 million bounties on their heads in 2023 and 2024. On Wednesday last week, national security police took away Alan Keung Ka-wai's birth father to help with investigations. Keung was the chairman of advocacy group Hong Kong Democratic Independence Union and took part in the election as well. In her manifesto for the 'Hong Kong Parliament' election, Chin said she was a UK-based retiree. She also disclosed that she worked for the Correctional Services Department until her retirement and joined opposition party People Power afterwards. Chin left Hong Kong in March 2022.

Hong Kong 47: Tiffany Yuen freed after more than 4 years in prison

Tiffany Yuen Ka-wai, one of 47 Hong Kong opposition figures charged in the city's largest national security case so far, has been released from prison after serving a sentence of four years and three months. Yuen, a former member of the Southern District Council, left Lo Wu Correctional Institution at around 5.40am on Tuesday. According to local media, two black seven-seaters with their curtains drawn were seen leaving the compound, believed to be transporting Yuen. A source said the 31-year-old returned home after 6am and was reunited with her family. Later on Tuesday morning, Yuen posted on her Instagram account for the first time in four years. In her selfie, she was seen with long hair and holding a bouquet of flowers gifted by Frankie Fung Tat-chun, one of the 45 jailed activists who was released in July. 'Thank you everyone for the hard work. I will take a nap first. Give rehabilitated people a chance. I will take a break,' she wrote in the caption.
