Indian occupied Jammu Kashmir police detain journalist Hilal Mir for ‘distorted' online content
Listen to article
A senior journalist based in Srinagar city of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) has been detained by Indian authorities for posting a poem on social media.
Hilal Mir, who has worked with Indian and international outlets including as a freelancer for Turkish state-run Anadolu Agency news agency, was taken into custody by the Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) wing last week. He was questioned over a Facebook post he shared on May 1 and later deleted.
The post featured a photograph of an elderly woman walking through the debris of homes reportedly demolished by security forces in south Kashmir following a recent Pahalgam terrorist attack.
The image was accompanied by Mir's text:
'My schizophrenic Kashmiri soul, don't spread yourself thin. Think. The side you should be on has already been chosen for you. Focus. Don't look elsewhere. You are the victim. You have been trampled upon, dispossessed, brutalised, humiliated, maimed, for no sin of yours. You are being erased. You don't owe anything to anyone, least of all to those who revel in your misery, who have on their mind the medieval Spain and Gaza as templates for your annihilation. Take rest, or a 15-day chilla if you may. Contemplate. You alone are in danger, vulnerable, weakened. You alone are the target.'
According to a police statement released on Monday, Mir was detained for allegedly 'inciting sentiments among young minds and instigating secessionist sentiment by portraying Kashmiris as victims of systemic extermination' through social media.
CIK statement described Mir as a 'radical social media user' accused of sharing 'extremist and distorted content with an intention to disturb peace and promote disaffection and secessionist ideology and present India in a bad shape.'
Authorities claim Mir's content 'reflects a veiled attempt to cultivate public resentment which is a threat to security/sovereignty' of India. Mir's laptop and phone have also seized by police.
'A preliminary inspection of the 'digital devices' revealed access to the radical account along with incriminating materials and other extremist, distorted content and propaganda,' the CIK statement,
Adding that Mir was 'found in touch with some suspected foreign based cell numbers involved in suspicious activities.'
A family member told local media that Mir, who has worked as a free lancer for TRT world and also work as an editor at prominent Kashmir based English newspaper was in contact with Anadolu news Agency colleagues and also a part of jouranlist Whatsapp group.
Police said Mir was 'presumably taking dictation from the adversary for disturbing the peace and tranquillity in the valley which is a matter of investigation'. It said that Mir has been 'brought within the ambit of investigation and further probe is in progress."
"In a 2019 article for Turkey-based TRT World titled 'How India silenced Kashmir's leading newspaper columnists,' published after the revocation of Article 370, Hilal Mir wrote about how authorities 'arm-twisted' the local press in J&K, forcing critical opinion writers to either moderate their write-ups or 'stop writing'."
Mir was also one of four journalists whose homes were searched by IOJK Police in 2021 during an investigation into a controversial post by the blog 'Kashmir Fight'.
The blog had pointed out several individuals, including journalists, and alleged their collaboration with security agencies and the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government.

Alarm grows as China restricts mineral export
Listen to article Alarm over China's stranglehold on critical minerals grew on Tuesday as global automakers joined their US counterparts to complain that restrictions by China on exports of rare earth alloys, mixtures and magnets could cause production delays and outages without a quick solution. German automakers became the latest to warn that China's export restrictions threaten to shut down production and rattle their local economies, following a similar complaint from an Indian EV maker last week. China's decision in April to suspend exports of a wide range of critical minerals and magnets has upended the supply chains central to automakers, aerospace manufacturers, semiconductor companies and military contractors around the world. The move underscores China's dominance of the critical mineral industry and is seen as leverage by China in its ongoing trade war with US President Donald Trump. Trump has sought to redefine the trading relationship with the US' top economic rival China by imposing steep tariffs on billions of dollars of imported goods in hopes of narrowing a wide trade deficit and bringing back lost manufacturing. Trump imposed tariffs as high as 145% against China only to scale them back after stock, bond and currency markets revolted over the sweeping nature of the levies. China has responded with its own tariffs and is leveraging its dominance in key supply chains to persuade Trump to back down. Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to talk this week, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Tuesday, and the export ban is expected to be high on the agenda.

PM announces new era with Pak-US ties
ISLAMABAD: America's 249th birthday bash in Islamabad went full throttle on Wednesday as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a bold 'new era' in US-Pakistan relations – reminding everyone that Washington was one of Pakistan's earliest backers way back in 1947. At a glittering Independence Day celebration hosted by the US Embassy – a full month before July 4 – PM Sharif declared that Pakistan and America were stepping into a 'new era' of relations, while tossing sharp jabs at India and tipping his hat to Donald Trump. 'This is a new chapter,' Sharif told a high-profile crowd packed with political bigwigs, top brass, civil society members, and diplomats. 'We're committed to strengthening Pakistan-US relations. Both countries believe in democratic traditions and the supremacy of the constitution.' Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Secretary General Salman Akram Raja were amongst the politicians that joined the ceremony. PM Sharif said that the US was one of the first nations to recognise Pakistan after its 1947 independence. He thanked Washington for decades of development support – but made sure no one forgot the cost Pakistan has paid fighting terror. 'We've lost over 90,000 lives. Our economy's taken a $150 billion hit,' he said. 'Pakistan's sacrifices in counterterrorism are second to none.' On this occasion, PM Sharif slammed India over the recent four-day war between the two nuclear armed rivals, branding the Pahalgam incident as a false-flag operation and accusing New Delhi of using the tragedy to target civilians. 'We called for an international investigation – India responded by bombing us,' he said, adding that Pakistan had responded in kind by shooting down six Indian aircraft. Still, the prime minister stressed his desire for regional peace. He credited international efforts, including those by US President Trump, for helping to de-escalate hostilities and secure a ceasefire. 'We appreciate President Trump's efforts in promoting peace and economic cooperation.' Meanwhile, acting US Ambassador Natalie Baker opened with a warm 'As-Salaam-Alaikum' – in Urdu, no less – as she spoke of shared values, mutual respect, and a future rich with potential.
