A.P. Congress chief Y.S. Sharmila demands reinstallation of YSR's statue at Nandigama centre

The Hindu10 hours ago
Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Y. S. Sharmila on Friday slammed the TDP-led NDA government in the State for removal of the statue of her father and former Chief Minister of the undivided State the late Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy at Nandigama Gandhi Centre.
'On behalf of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Party, we strongly condemn this act,' she posted on X. She said after YSR's demise, the then government had installed his statue at Gandhi Centre in Nandigama. 'If there are any illegal structures setup by YSRCP around the statue, remove them, we have no objection. But if you use that as an excuse to lay hands on YSR's statues, we will not remain silent,' she warned and demanded immediate reinstallation of the statue in the place from which it was removed.
She said it was unfortunate that the government was trying to vent its anger on the YSR Congress Party by targeting YSR's statues. Asserting that YSR did not have anything to do with YSR Congress Party, she said her father was a staunch Congress leader, who, as the Chief Minister of the undivided Andhra Pradesh, worked relentlessly for the welfare of the people at the grassroot level. 'Such a great leader, who enjoyed such immense public affection, should not be associated with those who play petty politics. Removing his statue is a disgraceful act,' she reiterated.

UT questions transfer of V-3 roads from MC to its dept

Chandigarh: Raising serious questions over MC general house's decision to transfer the responsibility of V-3 roads (dividing sectors) from its engineering department to that of the Chandigarh administration, the latter has asked the civic body to explain the relevant provision of the Act and Rules through which it will be done. The move came following the legal assessment of the subject by the law department of UT administration, which forced the local bodies department to issue a written reply on the relevant provisions for the same. The UT's local bodies department will now make a decision only after MC responds to the issue raised by the Chandigarh administration. However, sources in the administration revealed that they failed to find any such provision to transfer such roads from MC to the UT administration, and are, therefore, awaiting MC's reply with specific provisions of the specific Act. The letter from the UT's local bodies department to the civic body states, "It is intimated that as per the advice of the law department, UT Chandigarh, kindly provide the relevant provisions of Act/Rule through which the transfer of V-3 roads, from the control of MC Chandigarh to the UT's engineering department can be taken up." Significantly, despite stiff protest from both opposition parties — Congress and AAP, the BJP-led MC approved the agenda to transfer V-3 roads to the UT administration in its general house in March. Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla pushed for it, citing the poor condition of the roads. The municipal commissioner also gave his consent to it. Rejecting the agenda, councillors of the opposition parties criticised the mayor and BJP, saying that instead of transferring the roads to the administration, the mayor should bring funds from the Chandigarh administration to improve the road conditions. Despite this, the agenda was approved. BOX As per MC records, there are 68 V-3 roads in the city, which fall under the jurisdiction of the MC. These roads span a length of 262.43km with a width equivalent to 12ft. The annual expenditure on recarpeting these roads is between Rs 10 crore and Rs 12 crore. "As per practice, the roads are recarpeted after a physical verification every five years, and approximately one-fifth of the total length of these roads is carpeted each year. Due to a scarcity of funds, the work of carpeting has been pending for the last several years. The total cost involved for carpeting these V-3 roads is approximately rupees 26 crore," sources in the MC said. Moreover, due to the paucity of funds, besides V-3, the road re-carpeting works of other roads have also been pending for over two years, and none of the roads have been re-carpeted, which has led to the poor condition of roads in the majority of the areas of the city. Box: THE ROADS YOU TAKE The roads of the city are classified into 7 categories V-1: Fast roads connecting Chandigarh with other towns V-2: Arterial roads V-3: Fast vehicular sector dividing roads V-4: Meandering shopping streets V-5: Sector circulation roads V-6: Access roads to houses V-7: Footpaths and cycle tracks WHY THE FUSS OVER V-3 ROUTES As per MC records, there are 68 V-3 roads in the city, which fall under the jurisdiction of the civic body These roads span a length of 262.43km with a width equivalent to 12ft MC spends anything between Rs 10 crore and Rs 12 crore every year on recarpeting these roads QUOTE As per practice, the roads are recarpeted after a physical verification every five years, and approximately one-fifth of the total length of these roads is carpeted each year. No blanket farm loan waiver, only the most distressed to get it: Bawankule

1 2 Nagpur: The Maharashtra govt is preparing to roll out a targeted loan waiver scheme for distressed farmers, with revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule asserting that only the most deserving will receive the relief. "The loan waiver will not be given to all farmers. It will be based on genuine need and merit," Bawankule told reporters in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar on Thursday, emphasizing that the state remains committed to fulfilling the pre-election promise made by the BJP. "We have not backed out. The promise still stands, and we will ensure it is implemented for those who truly need it," Bawankule added. The govt has constituted a committee to conduct a comprehensive survey across Maharashtra to identify eligible beneficiaries, Bawankule said. The final roadmap will be drawn up after the panel submits its report. "The objective is clear: help must reach the last person in the queue, and only those in actual need will be considered," he added. The loan waiver issue has remained a thorny subject within the Mahayuti coalition, led by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and his deputies Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar. The alliance pledged a blanket farm loan waiver ahead of the 2024 Assembly elections, but nearly nine months into power, the plan remains on paper. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Are The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo This delay has invited criticism from the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), which has accused the BJP-led govt of betraying farmers. Bawankule's remarks suggest the govt is now opting for a more calibrated approach instead of a blanket waiver, aiming to balance fiscal prudence with agrarian distress relief.
