DA case: Mohali court extends Majithia's custody till Aug 2

Time of India19-07-2025
Mohali: A Mohali court has extended the judicial custody of senior
Shiromani Akali Dal
(SAD) leader and former minister
Bikram Singh Majithia
till August 2. Majithia was arrested last month by the Punjab vigilance bureau for allegedly possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.
The Akali leader was produced in the court after his judicial custody ended on Saturday. The court extended Majithia's custody for 14 more days.
In a joint action by the SIT and the Punjab vigilance department against Majithia, raids were conducted at several of his hideouts in Chandigarh and Delhi on Friday. Apart from Chandigarh, the vigilance team also raided Sainik Farm in Delhi, which is claimed to be Majithia's benami property.
Its estimated value is Rs 150-200 crore. Shell companies related to Majithia and his family, through which drug money was allegedly circulated, are also being probed.
Even as a police convoy carrying Majithia reached the Mohali court on Saturday, the administration employed strict measures apprehending a possible protest by the SAD activists. Many leaders, including Mohali district Akali president Parvinder Singh Sohana, were taken into preventive custody.
Majithia was arrested on June 26, and since July 6, he has been lodged in New Nabha Jail.
Majithia's lawyers informed the court that he was kept with a person who had been sentenced to death. He killed three youths, one of whom was a girl. The other person has been booked under POCSO, the lawyers submitted. Along with this, orders have come from the govt that no one is allowed to meet Majithia, they added.
The public prosecutor, however, said family members and lawyers were allowed to meet Majithia with court orders.
Bikram Majithia's wife, Ganieve Kaur, meanwhile, addressed the mediapersons on Saturday and questioned the functioning of the assembly. "What will I do by going to Vidhan Sabha? They don't let anyone speak. They don't respect women in the first place. Sukhpal Khaira was given 10 seconds to speak," she said.
Majithia had moved two applications in the court. In the first application he sought change of barrack. His lawyers said he was an MLA and a former minister, so according to the jail rules, he should be given special facilities prescribed under the orange category.
He should also be kept separate from other prisoners, they submitted.
It was also submitted that Majithia should be given the reason for arrest and a copy of the jail manual. The second application was submitted for bail. The court has issued a notice to the Punjab govt in this matter and hearing on application would be held on July 22.

'Fake News' Clause Removed: Karnataka Govt RevisMisinformation Bill After Facing Flak

Last Updated: The initial draft had proposed the creation of a 'Fake News on Social Media Regulatory Authority' and included severe penal provisions but this was seen as overreaching The Karnataka government is set to revise its proposed Misinformation and Fake News (Prohibition) Bill, 2025, after an earlier draft triggered widespread criticism and raised questions over legal tenability. The words 'fake news" have been removed from the new version and, as it stands revised titled the Karnataka Misinformation Regulation Bill, 2025, it is expected to be tabled during the monsoon session of the state assembly. According to sources, the scrutiny committee headed by state law minister HK Patil has cleared the draft, which is likely to be placed before the cabinet. News18 accessed a copy of the draft bill, which comes at a time when governments across India are stepping up digital regulation. WHAT DOES THE DRAFT BILL SAY? In the draft bill that will be submitted in the upcoming monsoon session beginning August 19, the definition of misinformation has been retained: 'knowingly or recklessly making a false or inaccurate statement of fact, whether wholly or in part, in the context in which it appears, excluding opinion, satire, religious or philosophical sermons, and parody – as long as a reasonable person would not interpret the content as factual". The bill defines 'communication" as dissemination of information to 10 or more persons in Karnataka, through any medium — including bots, computer resources, television, or in-person communication. This applies to content originating both inside and outside Karnataka, as long as it reaches people within the state. The offence of misinformation is defined as follows: 'no person, whether inside or outside Karnataka, shall communicate or abet the communication of misinformation to persons in Karnataka if such communication disrupts public tranquillity, affects the conduct of free and fair elections in any part of the state, or incites others to commit an offence. Anyone found guilty can be punished with imprisonment ranging from three months to five years and a fine. Abetment carries a punishment of up to two years' imprisonment and a fine." SPECIAL COURTS TO DIRECT MEDIA HOUSES The draft bill states that special courts may be established to issue directions to media houses to correct or take down content. Non-compliance can lead to up to two years' imprisonment and a daily fine of Rs 25,000. 'For the purpose of providing for speedy trial of offences under this Act, the State Government shall, with concurrence of the Chief Justice of the High Court of Karnataka, by notification in the Official Gazette, establish Special Court comprising a Sessions Judge," the draft bill states. CONTROVERSIAL 'SANATAN' CLAUSE TO BE DROPPED? 'The first 'so-called draft' seen in the public domain was fake. We have been working on a comprehensive one that will control misinformation and also ensure that people get what is 'real news'," a source in the IT/BT ministry said. The bill had come under fire from several quarters after the draft included terms flagged as excessive, especially a clause that proposed a seven-year jail term for the 'publication of content amounting to disrespect of Sanatan symbols and beliefs on social media platforms". This clause was among the most controversial and is likely to be dropped or reworded, sources said. The revised version is presently under scrutiny of the IT BT, home, and law departments. The first two are reviewing the penal clauses, which were earlier flagged for their severity. Officials involved in the review said several portions of the earlier draft had been directly lifted from the Union government's 2019 Fake News (Prohibition) Bill. 'It mentions ministers like information and broadcasting, which is not even a state subject. Section 15, which deals with company offences, was also reportedly taken verbatim from Section 7 of the Union bill. All of this, officials said, has now been reviewed and reworked in the revised version. Even the Rs 10 lakh penalty was copied from the Centre's bill, all of it had to be reviewed and worked upon," a senior official told News18. In April last year, the ministry of corporate affairs introduced the draft Digital Competition Act to tackle anti-competitive behaviour by tech giants such as Google, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft and X. In a similar development, X Corp (formerly Twitter) filed a writ petition in the Karnataka High Court in March, questioning the Centre's powers under Section 69A of the IT Act after being ordered to block more than 8,000 accounts in India. Later that year, Meta was fined Rs 213.14 crore by the Competition Commission of India for alleged violations of competition law linked to WhatsApp's 2021 privacy policy, which reportedly allowed data to be shared across Meta platforms. WhatsApp was also asked to trace the origin of flagged messages, raising questions around its end-to-end encryption. It has challenged the 2021 IT Rules in the Delhi HC. State IT-BT minister Priyank Kharge had earlier told News18: 'We're not trying to change any policy but only trying to strengthen what already exists and ensure that there is 'news' and not misinformation that is given out to people," adding, 'the idea is to look at what already exists, connect the dots, and bring out an effective bill." Rs 16cr spent on drinking water survey in 2023 but report still under wraps

NEW DELHI: The government had conducted a survey of the quality of drinking water across cities in 2023 but didn't release the report or rankings after it abruptly cancelled the event scheduled for honouring the best performers in March 2025, just ahead of the last Lok Sabha elections. In a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha on Monday, the housing and urban affairs ministry said that Ipsos Research Pvt Ltd, an agency, was engaged during 2022-23 to conduct Pey Jal Survekshan in 485 AMRUT cities "at a cost of Rs 16.96 crore", of which Rs 16.1 crore has been released. Responding to whether the survey's findings have been released and govt has analysed the report for corrective measures, the ministry said, "The findings were communicated to the states/Union Territories at the workshop held on Nov 22, in New Delhi. During the workshop, discussions were held and states/UTs were advised to take corrective measures". The ministry not releasing the survey findings has remained a mystery considering that govt holds similar surveys across sectors to ensure "healthy competition" among states and cities. Interestingly, on Feb 27, 2024, months after the workshop with states and UTs, the ministry had issued a detailed press release announcing that the "first Pey Jal Survekshan Awards" would be held on March 5, with President Droupadi Murmu scheduled to preside over the event. It said that cities and states would be honoured for excellence in the water sector. In all, 130 awards were to be bestowed, reflecting the accomplishments of cities and states under different categories: gold, silver, and bronze.

A partnership that turned sour, a revenge plot: Inside robbery at ex-NSG commandant's Delhi home

Days after a retired NSG commandant was robbed at gunpoint at his home in Chawri Bazaar, police said four people, including a jewellery businessman, were arrested in the case. According to police, the businessman, Mohammad Kaif, was allegedly miffed after the 86-year-old victim, Bhim Sen — now a diamond and gems artisan — ended their business partnership. The other accused were identified as Aloknath Mishra, 35; Sohail Malik, 23; and Waseem, 48; police said. The incident took place on July 19 when Sen was at his house — which also doubles up as his office — along with his son Sandeep, daughter-in-law Neelam, and grandson. 'A man knocked on the door and called out the name of a family member. As soon as the door was opened, three masked assailants, armed with weapons, forced their way inside,' a police officer had said earlier. When the grandson resisted, one of the masked men took out a gun and tied his hands before taping his mouth, the officer had said. The intruders then looted jewellery and precious stones worth Rs 50 lakh, while also taking $3,550. They locked the family in the kitchen before fleeing. DCP (North) Raja Banthia said, 'Through sustained surveillance and intelligence analysis, it was established that three individuals were involved in the crime. These individuals were observed regrouping near Chawri Bazar Metro Station — two approached through nearby bylanes, while the third arrived in a TSR (three-wheeled scooter rickshaw) after deboarding a Metro train at Rajiv Chowk. Metro data later confirmed that this person had boarded the train from Noida City Centre.' A team led by Sub-Inspector Prashant found the TSR driver. 'The driver confirmed that he had picked up the individual from Connaught Place. The team found that the accused took another train back to Noida City Centre Metro station. He got off and drove away on a scooter,' the DCP said. The scooter was registered in the name of a junior engineer with the New Delhi Municipal Council, who lives in Noida. The engineer told the police that her scooter was being used by her driver, Aloknath Mishra. A trap was laid, and Mishra was arrested on Tuesday. 'Mishra admitted that the robbery had been orchestrated by Kaif as an act of revenge. Kaif hired Mishra, Sohail, and Waseem to execute the plan. Kaif was then arrested from his residence near Jama Masjid and Sohail was arrested from Mustafabad. They admitted that the proceeds of the robbery were with Waseem,' DCP Banthia said. Investigation showed that Waseem fled to Moradabad after the robbery and then went to Sambhal. He then booked a hotel in Roorkee, where he stayed for five days. 'Waseem kept his phone switched off most of the time, switching it on only for a few minutes daily — and always from a location away from his actual place of stay to mislead police. He hid the robbed jewels in Roorkee and was last tracked to Mussoorie,' Banthia said. A trap was laid at Library Chowk in Mussoorie, and the accused was arrested on July 27. Police have recovered the majority of the robbed amount. A police officer said Kaif started doing business with Sen in 2023, and has known him for 20 years. 'Kaif felt that Sen was visiting foreign countries and taking over his clients for his own business. This caused a monetary dispute between the two and led to a fallout,' the officer said.
