Kota Kinabalu: Over 450 women and youths in four villages in Pulau Gaya – Kg Gaya, Kg Lok Urai, Kg Torong Logong and Kg Kesuapan – will receive training in floral arrangement entrepreneurship, digital marketing, drop shipping and motivational sessions for academic success. A statement said it is part of a Ministry of Human Resources (Kesuma) and Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp) human capital development initiative bringing vital skills to one of Sabah's most geographically isolated communities. The 'Sentuhan Kesuma bersama HRD Corp di Bawah Bayu,' programme underscores the government's commitment to equitable access to education and economic empowerment, regardless of location. The event which coincided with National Training Week (NTW) 'Learning Without Borders' theme was officiated by the Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong, who emphasised the importance of direct outreach to remote areas. 'We aim to equip every citizen with income-generating skills ... a skilled populace fuels national progress,' he said, adding that next week's NTW 2025 would see a return to Pulau Gaya, with a target of training 5,000 residents. 'Our Sabah target for 2025 is 60,000 participants, a significant increase from last year's 15,000.' Meanwhile, Sabah Industrial Development Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe highlighted the potential for skills training to attract investment and create jobs in Sabah. He said such initiatives not only improve individual livelihoods but also stimulate economic growth for the entire state. The event also marked a strategic partnership between HRD Corp and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) through the Sabah Human Capital Initiatives & Nurturing Excellence (SHiNE) program. Phoong said the initiative would create a lifelong learning hub, focusing on research, skills training, and talent development solutions for Sabah's workforce. HRD Corp's Deputy Chairman, Tuan Ahsim Haji Jamat, anticipates SHiNE becoming a national model for human capital development. Further strengthening local skills, HRD Corp's Training Equipment and Facility Enhancement Scheme (ALAT) provided RM36,000 worth of equipment to the local tourism sector. E-invoice rethink is hailed

Ringgit likely to trade within RM4.22-RM4.23 against greenback next week

Kuala Lumpur: The ringgit is likely to trade around RM4.22 to RM4.23 next week, said an analyst. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said that next week multiple United States (US) economic data will be out, namely the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI) for the month of May which plays a key role in shaping the market. Advertisement 'While the data might show deceleration in inflation rate, the US Federal Reserve is likely to stay cautious as it is wary about the potential inflationary pressures arising from the tariff shocks. 'Already, responses from the US Institute for Supply Management (ISM) Index survey indicated that businesses have become more pessimistic as the higher tariffs have affected the supply chains and resulted in higher operating costs,' he told Bernama. The ringgit ended the week higher against the US dollar, closing at 4.2270/2360 on Friday from 4.2530/2605 a week earlier. The local note traded mostly higher against a basket of major currencies. Advertisement The ringgit rose vis-à-vis the Japanese yen to 2.9324/9390 from 2.9531/9585 and inched higher against the British pound to 5.7212/7334 from 5.7284/7385 a week earlier. However, it depreciated versus the euro to 4.8268/8371 at Friday's close from 4.8169/8254 at the end of last week. The ringgit traded mostly higher against ASEAN currencies. New IRB Sabah Director calls on Hajiji

Kota Kinabalu: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor received a courtesy call from the new Director of the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) Sabah, Datin Dayang Halimah Awang Ahmad, at his office in Menara Kinabalu on Thursday. Dayang Halimah, who hails from Tawau, has held the position since March 1, 2025. Advertisement Prior to this, she served as the State Operations Director (Corporate Tax Audit) of IRB Sabah. Hajiji congratulated Dayang Halimah on her appointment and expressed confidence that the close ties between the State Government and IRB would be further strengthened to ensure more efficient and comprehensive revenue management. He said the Government remains committed to supporting efforts to enhance revenue collection in a fair and effective manner, in line with the State's development needs and the wellbeing of its people. Dayang Halimah said the visit was to introduce herself, as well as to discuss strategic collaboration between IRB and the State Government in areas such as tax compliance and revenue management. During the meeting, she also shared the direction and plans of IRB Sabah, including initiatives to expand service outreach and raise public awareness on taxation. On the same day, Hajiji also received a courtesy call from the Assistant Chief of the Army Reserve Force, Major General Dato' Mohammad Razeif Che Ahmad. He was accompanied by the Fifth Infantry Division Commander Major General Dato' Noorrul Azril Ariffin and the Army Planning and Development Director Colonel Burhan Sagoni.
