Bebe's ‘light, care and spark' live on a year after Southport attack, family say

Independent28-07-2025
The family of Southport attack victim Bebe King has said her light, care and spark live on as it approaches a year since her death.
The six-year-old was killed along with Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, when Axel Rudakubana launched his knife attack on the Taylor Swift-themed dance class in the town on July 29 last year.
On Monday, a post on the Instagram account of Bebe's Hive referenced the youngster's 'favourite musical' Wicked with the quote: 'Because I knew you, I have been changed for good.'
Bebe's Hive was set up by her family to provide support for grieving children through creativity and connection.
The post, which appeared to have been written by Bebe's mother Lauren, referred to her as 'my mini me' and 'her dad's soulmate'.
It said: 'It's time for us to take the space we need. To feel, to breathe, to hold each other close. To just be.
'To be able to create something so purposeful, so needed, has given us a strength we didn't know we had. A reason. A focus.
'We love and thank every single person who has helped us carry this.
'I feel her with me every day and that feeling is what keeps us going.
'Her light, her care, her spark – it lives on, and we'll continue it for as long as we can.
'To our incredible family and friends – thank you for keeping us afloat, while trying to keep yourselves above water. Thank you for loving Bebe so deeply and for riding this forever journey with us.
'To our amazing community – I don't think you realise what you've done. To everyone further, we also thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
'Your kindness has saved us.
'To Elsie and Alice, we never had the chance to meet you, but we feel like we know you. Your light shines so brightly through your parents, and we're proud to walk alongside them.'
In a reference to the Taylor Swift song Bejeweled, the post went on to say: 'Our girls' energy will continue to shimmer.
'And to every brave child, every adult, every family whose lives were changed forever that day – we see you and we're sending you so much love.'
A video of Bebe dancing and playing with a bubble machine accompanied the caption, along with photos of her.
Sefton Council has asked people not to lay flowers to mark the anniversary of the attack but instead to consider donating to causes including Bebe's Hive, as well as Elsie's Story and Alice's Wonderdance, which were set up in the victim's memories.
A three-minute silence will be held in the town at 3pm on Tuesday.

Thought for the Day pundit who accused Robert Jenrick of 'xenophobia' runs refugee resettlement charity and helps them find homes in the UK

Dr Krish Kandiah, who caused so much controversy on yesterday's Today programme, runs a refugee resettlement charity. He calls himself a social entrepreneur, broadcaster and speaker and says he is a 'regular adviser' to the Government. His Sanctuary Foundation describes itself as a charity supporting refugees to 'find welcome, work and worthwhile housing in the UK'. The Charity Commission says it raised £122,000 last year while he draws a wage of up to £70,000 from the organisation. The author has not been shy to wade into other controversies, accusing blonde US actress Sydney Sweeney of 'flirting with the idea of eugenics' over a clothing advert that said she had 'great jeans'. In 2017, he wrote in the Church Times: 'I'm not saying that everyone who voted to leave [the EU] is racist, but I do believe many have seen Brexit as an excuse to express negative opinions about immigrants.' In 2014, he wrote in Christian Today that he feared he could have been radicalised like homegrown British jihadist Ibrahim Kamara if he hadn't found Jesus. Dr Kandiah, who is married with three children and also fosters children, grew up in Brighton and is a committed Christian.

Strictly Come Dancing ‘fix' row after Dani Dyer claimed she was a ‘qualified dancer' in unearthed revelation

STRICTLY Come Dancing could be embroiled in a new 'fix' row after Dani Dyer claimed she was a 'qualified dancer'. Dani Dyer was the second celebrity contestant confirmed for Strictly Come Dancing 2025, with the announcment being made on The One Show earlier this week. 6 6 6 6 Dani, 29, shot to fame when she won Love Island in 2018 - with her new reality stint very different to the dating show. The daughter of EastEnders actor Danny Dyer will waltz her way around the ballroom in September when she joins the cast of the hit series. But now it has been revealed that in an unearthed passage from her autobiography, Dani boasted about being a "qualified dancer". She said in her 2019 book that she would put "qualified dancer" under the list of qualifications on her CV. Writing in her book, which came out six years ago, Dani wrote about how she went to theatre school at weekends from the age of 2 to 14. "It was called O'Farrell's Stage School and I was a really good little dancer," she said. Dani added: "I'm not a bad singer but it was the dance stuff I loved more - jazz, tap, ballet, modern. I'd get home and prance around the house." Elsewhere in the book she writes up a mock CV where she states her qualifications include: "Qualified dancer and pretty good at singing (especially Dua Lipa or Ariana Grande at the top of her voice while cleaning the kitchen)." 'I'D BE HAPPY TO BE WHISKED AROUND' She also spoke about Strictly in her book, saying how she would jump at the chance of being asked to compete on the hit reality dancing competition. "If Strictly Come Dancing want to give me a call I'd also be happy to be whisked around the dance floor," she penned at the time. At the time of her book coming out, Dani was all loved up with then-beau Jack Fincham, and she said of Strictly: "The only thing I'd be worried about would be the curse." In her book from several years ago, Dani also swooned about her bond with Shirley Ballas. Bonding with her on a trek for Comic Relief, Dani said she was "just the most graceful, lovely person". But despite admitting her prior dance experience, fans are still excited to see Dani storm the ballroom. 6 Reacting to the news of Dani being confirmed for the series, one person on X said: "Woooo I love Dani!!!" "Whoop I love Dani! She'll be awesome," penned a second. The Sun has contacted Strictly for comment but they did not immediately respond. SHOWBIZ BACKGROUND SCRUTINY Dani is not the only star in Strictly history to have had their background in the world of showbiz scrutinised. Tasha Ghouri, also from Love Island, had her background in dance. The star who appeared on the series last year faced a backlash for being a trained dancer and branded the show a "fix" because they signed her up. But despite all of their experience, nor Tasha, Sarah or JB won the show. Revealed: Hero mum saved her daughter, five, by pushing her away - just seconds before 32-year-old was killed by a falling tree branch

A mother killed by a falling tree branch saved her daughter's life by pushing the youngster out of the way in the split second before she was hit. Madia Kauser, 32, was taking the little girl, five, and her older brother for an evening walk in the park when the tree fell directly towards them. It's understood the girl was in a pushchair which Mrs Kauser managed to push away before taking the full force of the falling branch herself - so that her daughter survived unscathed. Her husband Wasim Khan, 33, was just yards ahead with their nine-year-old son when the branch fell but was powerless to act in time during the shocking episode on Monday night. He rushed to her side but little could be done for his tragic wife who relatives say adored her children. One told the Daily Mail: 'Madia would have done anything for her children.' The family are said to be in a state of shock after the freak accident which happened near Witton Country Park in Blackburn, Lancashire, a popular local beauty spot. On Wednesday, Blackburn council had completely cut down what remained of the tree from which the branch fell as well as lopping off branches from several other nearby trees. The area was littered with sawdust. The accident happened just yards from the park's Big Cover wood where trees form the majority of the habitat. On Wednesday relatives from all over the country were gathering at Blackburn's Madina mosque where the family were hoping a funeral could take place sometime in the evening. Former mayor and still sitting councillor Zamir Khan MBE, an uncle in the tight-knit family, said Madia's body was still with the coroner. He said: 'Her little girl told me her mother pushed her out of the way as the branch fell. 'Madia was a loving, doting mother and a very caring person. 'The older boy was walking with his father in front and could not believe what happened. 'It is very hard for the children. I do not think they will ever walk in that park again. 'It is tarnished for them. Their father is not in a good way either. He and other members of the family have taken it very hard. 'People have come from all over the country - from Sheffield, Bradford, Birmingham, London and other places - to be at her funeral which we hoped to have this afternoon in accordance with Muslim tradition. 'But until her body is released by the coroner, we cannot move forward. We are hoping it will be released today. 'What happened was an act of nature but it is unbelievable.' In a statement, the council said it was 'deeply saddened' after the accident on Monday. The authority's chief executive Denise Park said: 'Our thoughts and heartfelt condolence are with the family and friends of the person who has lost their life at this very difficult time. 'Emergency services including paramedics and the air ambulance attended the scene. Council staff also supported by cordoning off the area to ensure public safety. 'As part of precautionary safety measures, the tree involved was being felled this morning. 'Witton Park is a much-loved community space, and the safety of everyone who visits is of the utmost importance to us. 'Our thoughts remain first and foremost with the family at this very sad time.' A Lancashire Police spokesman said the woman's death was not being treated as suspicious and a file would be prepared for the coroner. A cyclist who rides through the park every day said: 'I have seen loads of fallen branches before but it is mainly because of high winds. 'There wasn't even a breeze when this poor woman was killed. It is utterly heartbreaking. 'I shudder to think what her poor children and husband are going through.' Many people walking there today were unaware of the tragedy and thought the council were carrying out unnecessary tree work. One said: 'I was initially cross that they had cut the tree down until someone told me what had happened. It doesn't bear thinking about.' Local councillor Paul Marrow said: 'There have been concerns about ash dieback disease and the number of dead trees in Witton Park and across the borough. 'The council needs to make regular, thorough inspections of the trees in the park to ensure they are safe.'
