UMG chief Lucian Grainge calls Drake's ‘Not Like Us' lawsuit ‘ridiculous'
In a declaration letter filed Thursday night in the Southern District of New York, Grainge said that Drake's accusation that UMG (the parent label firm to both Drake and Lamar) defamed him and damaged his career 'makes no sense due to the fact that the company that I run, Universal Music Group N.V., has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in Drake, including longstanding and critical financial support for his recording career, the purchase and ownership of the bulk of his recording catalog, and the purchase of his music publishing rights.'
Drake signed a new deal with UMG label Republic in 2022 for a reported $400 million, and he's one of the bestselling artists of the last 20 years. Yet Interscope artist Lamar's scathing 'Not Like Us' famously capped a venomous battle between the two artists, which resulted in a pair of Grammy wins for Lamar, who performed the song at the Super Bowl halftime show.
Drake's attorneys, in discovery, have recently tried to obtain UMG's contract with Lamar and information about his personal life (Drake accused Lamar of beating his partner in the song 'Family Matters'). Drake has accused UMG of both defamation and running a clandestine campaign to boost 'Not Like Us' at the expense of his own reputation and career.
A notably exasperated Grainge wrote to the court that 'Given my role, I am accustomed (and unfortunately largely resigned) to personal attacks, and I further recognize that a frequent strategy of UMG's litigation opponents is to attempt to waste my and UMG's time and resources with discovery of the sort that Drake is seeking here — either in an attempt to gain media attention or in an effort to force some kind of commercial renegotiation or financial concessions.'
Grainge also denied having any personal involvement in the rollout or marketing for 'Not Like Us.'
'Whilst, as part of my role, I certainly have financial oversight of and responsibility for UMG's global businesses,' he said, 'the proposition that I was involved in, much less responsible for, reviewing and approving the content of 'Not Like Us,' its cover art or music video, or for determining or directing the promotion of those materials, is groundless and indeed ridiculous.'
In a separate letter to the court, UMG said that 'The premise of Drake's motion — that he could not have lost a rap battle unless it was the product of some imagined secret conspiracy going to the top of UMG's corporate structure — is absurd.'

Kaytranada Returns With New Album ‘Ain't No Damn Way'
For the second summer in a row, Haitian-Canadian producer Kaytranada is getting people dancing with a new studio album. The Grammy-winning DJ has released his fourth album Ain't No Damn Way!, the follow-up to last year's Timeless. Kaytranada gave little warning for the release, announcing the LP earlier this week and dropping lead single 'Space Invader' shortly thereafter. Like with Timeless, Kaytranada plays with a wide range of sounds and rhythms on the project, from more upbeat tracks like 'Championship' and 'Don't Worry Babe / I Got U Babe' to laid-back offerings like 'Things' and 'Shine Your Light For We.' He even samples TLC's 'Let's Do It Again' on closing track 'Do It! (Again!).' In recent years, Kaytranada has fully stepped into his power, unafraid to create beats or make musical tweaks that he feel might not resonate with listeners or collaborators. 'I always used to be very shy in the studio and sometimes let the artists just do their thing because I didn't want to correct them or anything. It took me a while to understand, OK, I got to be the one that says 'Do it like this,'" he told Rolling Stone last year. "I don't have a leader mentality. I'm learning to do that now.' Now, Kaytranada is 'trying to make Grammy-winning albums.' 'I just want to be remembered as one of the greats in terms of producing, not only dance and electronic but also just production in general,' he told Billboard. Kaytranada hits the road with Justice on a co-headlining tour across North America this fall. It all kicks off Oct. 16 in Vancouver and wraps up Nov. 16 in Miami. Before then, fans can listen to the producer featured on Teyana Taylor's forthcoming album Escape Room, due out next week.

Taylor Swift May Have Dropped Super Bowl 2026 Halftime Show Easter Egg
Originally appeared on E! Online Taylor Swift may be masterminding her very first Super Bowl halftime show performance. At least, that's what Swifties believe after picking up on several seemingly cryptic comments from the "Karma" singer's Aug. 13 appearance on her boyfriend Travis Kelce's New Heights podcast. First, there was that conversation about Taylor's love of baking, during which she quipped, "I'm really talking about bread 60 percent of the time now." Though it seemed like a surface remark about her favorite pastime, many fans think that was actually an Easter egg about the upcoming 60th Super Bowl in 2026, which will take place at the San Francisco 49ers' home turf at Levi's Stadium. And if that didn't begin to raise eyebrows, Taylor then went into detail making sourdough bread, which some theorized was a hint about the 49ers' mascot Sourdough Sam. "We're very deep into a sourdough obsession that had taken over my life," she shared during the interview, adding that Travis asked her earlier this summer to send him "two loaves of sourdough" while he was training with the Kansas City Chiefs—who defeated the 49ers at the 2019 and 2024 Super Bowls. Taylor thanking Travis' brother and co-host Jason Kelce for "screaming for 47 seconds" during her introduction on the podcast. While technically that number is a little off from the 49ers, Swifties online pointed out that her 47th stop on her Eras Tour show was at—you guessed it—Levi's Stadium. She also mentioned the number 47 when quipping that she performed in 47,000 countries during the Eras Tour. And, as Taylor even admitted on the show, she often uses numbers in her Easter eggs. "I love numerology. I love math stuff. I love dates," the 35-year-old shared. "That stuff, I find really fun." Taylor continued, "I want Easter eggs to be a certain thing, where if you are a part of the fandom and you want to experience music in a normal way, then you don't even see these. You don't even care what that thing is." But for those who do like decoding Easter eggs, she added, "For me, that's really fun because they find it fun." Will Taylor Swift be the next Super Bowl halftime performer? Here's why fans think so
Did Taylor Swift leave her fans breadcrumbs indicating she will be heading to her third Super Bowl in three years, but this time as the halftime entertainer? It's possible the timing could be right for the singer. In 2022, TMZ reported that sources with direct knowledge said the singer was asked to perform, but "she didn't want to perform until she finished rerecording all of her first six albums." In May, the "Showgirl" announced she had purchased her entire catalog from Shamrock Capital, telling fans all of her music belonged to her. And now fans think there were clues during her recent appearance on the "New Heights" podcast that pointed toward Miss Americana bringing her 12 eras to Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on Feb. 8. Swift told Jason Kelce that she's "really talking about bread 60% of the time" before diving into the sourdough loaves she bakes and comes up with clever puns for like "Are you bready for it?" or "It's a loaf story, baby just say yeast," connecting her songs to the baked buns. Turns out the mascot of the 49ers is Sourdough Sam and this year the 49ers stadium will host Super Bowl 60. Taylor Swift at Super Bowl 59: Her outfit, her suite mates from Ice Spice to the Kelce fam When Swift explained her football knowledge prior to dating Travis Kelce, she mentioned the entertainment spectacle: "I've known every halftime show from the Super Bowls, but I didn't watch the sports." The singer-songwriter plans for events, album releases and Easter egg clues years in advance. Whether Swift hoped to have her rerecords finished by 2026 or buy back her masters, she wore an Erin Andrews jacket to Super Bowl 58 with the number "60" on the back. Plus, Travis Kelce is about to begin his 13th season in the NFL. The singer's team did not respond immediately to an email requesting comment. Last year, Kendrick Lamar was announced as the halftime entertainer in early September. Follow Bryan West, the USA TODAY Network's Taylor Swift reporter, on Instagram, TikTok and X as @BryanWestTV.
