Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the 184 newly constructed Type-VII Multi-Storey Flats for Members of Parliament at Baba Kharak Singh (BKS) Marg, New Delhi He also planted a Sindoor sapling at the residential premises and interacted with 'shramjeevis', workers and engineers behind the flats. The four towers are beautifully named Krishna, Godavari, Kosi and Hooghly - four great rivers of India that give life to crores of people, and now their inspiration will also flow into the lives of our lawmakers, he mentioned.Taking a jibe at the opposition, he added, 'Some people may get upset that the name Kosi reminds them of Bihar's elections. Such small-minded people always think in that way..."Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju, and Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs and Power Manohar Lal were also present at the occasion. The inaugurated complex is designed to be self-sufficient and is equipped with a full range of modern amenities to address the functional needs of the members of the Parliament "Our MPs will face no issues in the new residences and will be able to focus more on their work... In these multi-storey buildings, more than 180 MPs will live together," Modi said.Incorporating green technology, the project adheres to the standards of the GRIHA 3-star rating and complies with the National Building Code (NBC) 2016. These environmentally sustainable features are expected to contribute to energy conservation, renewable energy generation, and effective waste management, as per a press release issued by the government. The use of advanced construction technology—specifically, monolithic concrete with aluminum shuttering—enabled timely completion of the project while ensuring structural durability. The complex is also Divyang-friendly, demonstrating a commitment to inclusive design. PM Modi also highlighted that the development of the project was necessitated due to shortage of adequate housing for MP. Owing to the limited availability of land, there has been a sustained emphasis on vertical housing developments aimed at optimizing land use and minimizing maintenance costs."Like I previously said, the rent of the ministries functioning from rented buildings would cost the government nearly Rs 1500 crores annually... Similarly, the government expenses were very high in the absence of an adequate number of MP residences," the prime minister said."Despite a shortage of MP residences, no new residence was constructed from 2014 to 2024. We took this work as a campaign. Around 350 MP residences have been built since 2014...," he added. Each residential unit for MPs offers approximately 5,000 square feet of carpet area, providing ample space for both residential and official functions. The inclusion of dedicated areas for offices, staff accommodation, and a community center will support members of Parliament in fulfilling their responsibilities as public representatives, the government stated. All buildings within the complex are constructed to be earthquake-resistant, in accordance with modern structural design norms. A comprehensive and robust security system has been implemented to ensure the safety of all residents. This residential complex, situated at BKS Marg, New Delhi, offers significant locational advantages for the MPs, particularly due to its proximity to the Parliament House Complex.PM Modi recalled the inauguration of Kartavya Path Common Central Secretariat buildings as he spoke during the inauguration ceremony of the new flats.'A few days ago, I inaugurated the Kartavya Path Common Central Secretariat buildings, and today I have the opportunity to inaugurate Kartavya Bhavan, the residential complex for my colleagues in Parliament," he said.

Axed for defying Congress's ‘vote chori' line, Siddaramaiah's vocal loyalist: Who is Rajanna?

Among the most vocal Congress leaders in Karnataka, state cooperation minister K N Rajanna was forced to resign from the Siddaramaiah Cabinet on Monday, two days after saying that alleged voter list irregularities in the Mahadevapura Assembly constituency in Bengaluru occurred on the Congress's watch. Rajanna's statement embarrassed the Congress leadership as it came barely two days after Rahul Gandhi's allegation that over 1 lakh votes were 'stolen' in Mahadevapura in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, helping the BJP win the Bangalore Central parliamentary constituency. Ever since the Congress came to power in Karnataka in 2023, the Madhugiri MLA has put the party leadership on the back foot with his remarks on several issues. He has also been a bellwether of the power struggle between the party factions led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D K Shivakumar. On Saturday, Rajanna, 74, said the Congress-led state government had failed to act when draft voter rolls were prepared. That his remarks came a day after Gandhi held a massive 'Vote Adhikar Rally' in Bengaluru also did not go down well with several Congress leaders. An influential figure in the state's cooperative sector, Rajanna is a four-time legislator belonging to the Scheduled Tribe (ST) Valmiki community. He was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Council in 1998 as a Congress nominee. He left the party in 2004 over the denial of a ticket for his debut Assembly election, which he then contested, successfully, as a Janata Dal (Secular) candidate from the now-defunct Bellavi constituency. After Siddaramaiah left the JD(S) to join the Congress in 2006, Rajanna was among the leaders who followed in his footsteps, to remain a Siddaramaiah loyalist since. Though his first two elections on the Congress ticket – from Madhugiri in the 2008 Assembly polls and then a bypoll in the same seat in 2009 – proved a failure, he was eventually elected from the Madhugiri Assembly seat in 2013 and then again in 2023. Rajanna has also served as the president of the Karnataka State Co-operative Apex Bank for two terms. Four months after the Congress stormed to power by winning the state Assembly polls in May 2023, Rajanna caused heartburn in the Shivakumar faction after he called for the need of three more Deputy CMs besides Shivakumar. This was among the Siddaramaiah camp's initial moves targeting the Deputy CM as it reportedly felt that too much power was concentrated with Shivakumar, who has also been the Bengaluru Development and Water Resources Minister besides heading the state Congress unit. Rajanna reiterated this demand in early 2024, before going silent on the issue. Later, he was also vocal in his demand to replace Shivakumar as the state party chief by reminding the Congress high command of its 'one person, one post' policy. Earlier this year, during the Karnataka Legislature's Budget Session, Rajanna dropped a bombshell when he alleged there was an attempt to 'honey trap' him by a 'gang' that had targeted 48 leaders cutting across party lines. Though there was then a buzz in state political circles that the 'gang' was 'linked' to a Congress leader, the Karnataka police's Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which investigated the case, did not find any evidence behind Rajanna's allegation. A month ago, Rajanna again put the Congress leadership in a spot after he publicly objected to All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary in-charge of Karnataka, Randeep Singh Surjewala, holding a meeting with state government officials. Rajanna had said that while it was within Surjewala's powers to meet party legislators and leaders, a meeting with government officials was 'unconstitutional'.

Identifying state-specific species key to boost India's seafood exports: Minister

New Delhi: Value addition and identifying state-specific species hold key to boosting India's seafood exports, Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh has said. Singh underscored the importance of value addition in Indian seafood to enhance its export potential. Speaking at the 'Seafood Exporters Meet 2025,' he highlighted the ongoing government initiatives being taken in the fisheries sector, including the development of a single-window system for better market linkages for all stakeholders, strengthening of High Seas and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) fishing, and upgrading infrastructure, all aimed at further bolstering the fisheries sector. The minister emphasised on Marine Products Export Development Authority's (MPEDA) pivotal role in navigating the tariff challenges faced by the industry and urged MPEDA, along with state governments, to conduct stakeholder consultations for accurate mapping of state-wise species-specific exports and identifying new export opportunities. He also assured the stakeholders of the government's commitment to further strengthening Indian seafood exports. Dr Abhilaksh Likhi, Secretary (Fisheries), MoFAH&D, highlighted that only about 10 per cent of India's seafood exports by value are currently value-added products, stressing the need to raise this share to 30–60 per cent in line with global benchmarks through enhanced domestic production or import-and-re-export strategies. He expressed concern over the heavy dependence on a single species, Whiteleg shrimp which accounts for 62 per cent of export value but only 38 per cent of quantity. Dr Likhi stated the urgency of reducing post-harvest losses and assured that issues related to tariff and non-tariff barriers would be addressed in coordination with the Department of Commerce, Ministry of External Affairs, and other relevant authorities. He also called for targeted inputs to identify and finance infrastructure upgrades that would significantly boost value addition across the seafood export value chain. India's annual fish production has witnessed a significant growth of 104 per cent, rising from 95.79 lakh tonnes in FY 2013-14 to 195 lakh tonnes in FY 2024-25. Inland fisheries and aquaculture have emerged as key contributors, accounting for over 75 per cent of the total production.

BJD to move Orissa HC on 'vote discrepancies' in 2024 assembly, Lok Sabha polls

Bhubaneswar: The BJD said that it would approach the Orissa High Court regarding "discrepancies" during the 2024 assembly and Lok Sabha polls, as the EC has "failed" to give any satisfactory reply to the regional outfit on the issue. BJD spokesperson Amar Patnaik, MLA Dhruba Charan Sahoo and former MP Sarmistha Sethi made the announcement at a press conference here on Monday. "Around eight months ago, BJD had submitted fact-based evidence to the Election Commission of India (ECI) regarding the vote discrepancy observed during last elections and sought a reply, but a satisfactory reply has not been received yet. Therefore, the Biju Janata Dal has decided to approach the High Court regarding this matter," Patnaik told reporters here. "Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has recently raised questions about the transparency of the elections, following which the party's state unit is also raising the issue now. However, the BJD had flagged this long before that. Gandhi also sought the audit system demanded by the BJD earlier," Patnaik said. Alleging that the ECI has not been able to remove the doubts from the minds of the people on the transparency and election results, Patnaik said, "That is why the Biju Janata Dal is moving the High Court." He, however, made it clear that the BJD's move has nothing to do with the Congress allegation of 'vote chori' (theft of votes). The BJD spokesperson said that after studying the data provided by the ECI after the end of the last elections, many discrepancies were observed. As a responsible political party, the BJD sought clarification from the ECI regarding this discrepancy, he said. "We had raised three points – First, in all parliamentary constituencies of the state, the number of votes counted was more than the number of votes cast in the EVMs. Secondly, there was a significant difference between the total number of votes cast in the parliamentary constituencies and the total number of votes cast in the assembly constituencies. The polling was held simultaneously," Patnaik said. Thirdly, that after the end of the election time at 5 pm on voting days, the number of votes cast in the Lok Sabha and assembly polls varied from about 7 to 30 per cent. In fifty per cent of the assembly seats, this difference ranged from 15 to 30 per cent, the BJD spokesperson claimed. He said the BJD, on December 19, 2024, lodged a complaint with the ECI in this regard, and a response was requested. Apart from this, in order to make the election process more transparent, an audit of the entire process, starting from the preparation of the voter list to the completion of the counting of votes, was also demanded. "Such an audit system of the election process is available in all developed countries. Similarly, it was requested that the VVPAT system be implemented for all votes," he said.
