Delhi: BJP and AAP spar over GST amendment Bill

Indian Express21 hours ago
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Leader of Opposition Atishi exchanged heated words over Delhi Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2025, in the Assembly on Friday. Tabled on Thursday, the Bill was passed by the House later in the day.
While AAP's Atishi demanded a discussion on the amendments, Speaker Vijender Gupta countered, saying that when her party was in power, it never allowed a discussion on it.
Former AAP finance minister and now BJP MLA, Kailash Gahlot, said, 'I have been a finance minister in the previous (AAP) government and no such discussion was held. This is just a formality… When Atishi was the finance minister or the CM, no discussion was held on such bills either.'
Atishi said that calling the Bill a mere formality is an 'insult to the House'. Maintaining that traders are worried about GST, she said, 'Traders are saying that while they are being burdened with arbitrary compliance, the government is providing tax exemptions to SEZs.'
In response, the CM highlighted that the amendments were passed during the GST council meeting held last year. 'She (Atishi) is now questioning reforms that she neither debated nor helped shape. It is unfortunate that someone entrusted with Delhi's finances remained absent during key deliberations.'
Gupta also blamed the AAP for not implementing any Union government schemes when it was in power in Delhi.

AAP, Delhi govt. trade blame over waterlogging, state of civic services following downpour

The Opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) criticised the Delhi government over the 'lack' of civic preparedness, which led to traffic snarls and waterlogging in the city following a downpour on Saturday. Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh responded by sharing purported videos of waterlogged stretches during AAP's 11-year tenure and clips of the same spots, where no stagnant water could be seen, to demonstrate the progress under the BJP government. During this year's heavier-than-usual monsoon, the Delhi government has fended off attacks from the Opposition over the alleged lack of civic preparedness by asserting that the stormwater drains were desilted in time, even as AAP has dared the government to release an audit report on the desilting works. 'Collapse of services' Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Assembly Atishi shared videos on X purportedly showing heavy waterlogging in Palam, Dhaula Kuan, and Saket. 'On Raksha Bandhan, the entire city is submerged. People cannot step out of their homes. The collapse of governance under (Chief Minister) Rekha Gupta's government is preventing brothers from meeting their sisters,' said the LoP in an X post. The former CM said that AAP had demanded a discussion on waterlogging in the Assembly, but the government avoided the debate despite promising to resolve the issue. In a letter to Ms. Gupta, the LoP highlighted a water supply crisis in her constituency of Kalkaji due to the pumping station in the area getting 'completely submerged' and charged the government with 'stalling and collapsing' within six months of coming to power. 'I am heartbroken to say that this situation is not a natural calamity. This is the result of administrative negligence,' wrote Ms. Atishi, urging the CM to direct the PWD Minister to take 'immediate steps to restore water supply in Kalkaji'. 'Continuous work' Earlier in the day, while posting videos on X to show how the government has worked to prevent waterlogging-prone spots from being inundated, Mr. Singh said in a remark in Hindi: 'Nigambodh Ghat, Minto Bridge, Mahipalpur, Saket — where water used to accumulate every monsoon, now traffic passes through without stopping.' 'This change didn't happen by chance,' he said, adding, 'Our government has been working continuously to eliminate waterlogging and improve the city that was ruined by AAP's negligence.' The Minister has repeatedly said that while his department is doing all it can to prevent waterlogging, it cannot undo '11 years of neglect' by the AAP government. Traffic diversions Reports of inundated stretches, uprooted trees, and heavy traffic came from many parts of the national capital throughout the day. Traffic was diverted from the Azad Market railway underpass, Ram Bagh Road, and other flooded stretches. Delhi Traffic Police issued several advisories on diversions on X, one of which urged commuters to opt for Delhi Metro services.

SAD leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal ties rakhi to Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia in Nabha jail, accuses CM of denying timely meeting

Patiala: MP and senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal visited her brother, former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia , on Friday at the newly built district jail in Nabha to tie a rakhi. Majithia is currently in judicial custody in a disproportionate assets case. Speaking to the media after the meeting, she alleged that CM Bhagwant Mann's govt initially denied her permission to meet Majithia on Raksha Bandhan despite repeated requests over the past four days. She claimed that upon arriving in Nabha directly from Delhi, she was stopped at the jail gate and was only allowed to meet her brother after insisting on staying until permission was granted. Criticising the state govt, Badal said that while the case against Majithia pertains to assets, the public narrative was being misrepresented as one of drug trafficking. She also alleged a bias in law enforcement, citing the example of a close aide of an AAP legislator from Faridkot who was given a clean chit despite heroin allegedly being recovered from his vehicle. Earlier in the day, Badal shared an old photograph with her brother on social media, expressing hope that Guru Sahib would grant him the strength to face what she termed the 'government's tyranny'. Jail officials, however, denied that any meeting was refused. They said that Harsimrat Badal only had to wait a few minutes due to procedural requirements. Officials also noted that around 200 sisters tied rakhis to inmates in Nabha jail on Friday, with many prisoners sending emotional appeals to the youth to steer clear of crime.
