The Hindu18-06-2025
The Centre on Wednesday (June 18, 2025) approved construction of 2.35 lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Prime Minister's Housing scheme).
The approval was given at the third meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC) chaired by Srinivas Katikithala, Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), an official statement said.
The houses would be constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban 2.0 (PMAY-U 2.0). The total houses approved are 2,34,864 for nine States — Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
PMAY-U 2.0 is being implemented through four verticals — Beneficiary Led Construction (BLC), Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP), Affordable Rental Housing (ARH) and Interest Subsidy Scheme (ISS). The houses approved in the CSMC meeting are under BLC and AHP verticals of the scheme.
As of now, the total number of houses sanctioned under PMAY-U 2.0 is 7,09,979.
Among the houses approved, more than 1.25 lakh dwellings have been sanctioned for women alone, including single women and widows. A total of 44 houses have also been allotted to transgenders.
While 42,400 houses have been allotted in the name of Scheduled Caste beneficiaries, 17,574 would be for Scheduled Tribes and 1,13,414 for Other Backward Classes.
Under PMAY-U 2.0, 1 crore families will be provided financial assistance to construct or purchase a pucca (permanent) house in urban areas. The scheme focuses on upliftment of poor and middle-class families by giving them secured houses to focus on the betterment of their lives. For individuals/families, Central assistance of up to ₹2.50 lakh per housing unit is provided.
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U), launched in June 2015, was revamped and launched as PMAY-U 2.0. Under PMAY-U, more than 93.19 Lakh houses have already been constructed and delivered to beneficiaries. With the launch of PMAY-U 2.0, additional 1 crore EWS/LIG/MIG families of urban India will be provided pucca (permanent) houses.

Bihar polls: JD(U) workers urge Nitish Kumar's son to contest; erect posters outside party office

Posters outside JD(U) office in Patna (ANI) NEW DELHI: Janata Dal (United) workers on Sunday put up posters outside the party's Patna office urging chief minister Nitish Kumar 's son, Nishant Kumar , to contest the upcoming Bihar assembly elections . Also Read | 'My father is 100% fit': Nitish Kumar's son asks voters to make him CM again The posters, featuring photos of Nitish and Nishant alongside local party leaders, carried the message: 'Karyakarton ki maang, chunav ladein Nishant' (JD(U) workers want Nishant to contest the election). The banners went up on the same day Nishant — the only child of JD(U) supremo and in his 40s — is scheduled to address a public meeting in Patna, sparking speculation that he may formally announce his entry into politics. The event, titled 'Nishant Samvad' (Conversation with Nishant), is named after him and, according to its posters, will feature him 'sharing his thoughts on the public welfare schemes' launched by his father. Speculation about Nishant's political debut had been rife around Holi, when he praised his father's achievements and urged people to vote him back to power. At the time, banners describing him as 'the new hope' of JD(U) appeared across the city, while sections of the media reported that he was likely to be fielded from Harnaut — the constituency once represented by Nitish Kumar decades ago. RJD leader and former deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav has repeatedly claimed that Nishant's entry into politics is being blocked by a 'cabal' within JD(U) allegedly aligned with the party's ally, the BJP, to prevent JD(U) from securing long-term political prospects.

Chhattisgarh builds 3,000 houses for families affected by Naxal violence

Raipur: The Chhattisgarh government has begun constructing nearly 3,000 homes under a special Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) scheme for families affected by Naxal violence, including surrendered extremists who do not qualify under regular eligibility rules, said an officer overseeing the project. A woman with her child at a Naxal-affected region of Chhattisgarh. (PTI Photo)(PTI) Of the 5,000 identified beneficiaries, 3,000 have already been approved for housing. Of the approved beneficiaries the first instalment has been released to 2,111 families while 128 have received their second installment. In Sukma, Sodi Hungi, whose husband was killed by Naxals in 2005 moved into her first permanent home in July, while in Kanker, Dashri Bai, widowed in a Maoist attack during state elections, finished building her house within three months, the officer said. The highest number of houses– 984– sanctioned under the scheme are being built in Sukma followed by 761 homes in Bijapur and 376 in Narayanpur among others. Chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai said the project reflects a wider push for 'trust, development and rehabilitation' in conflict-hit areas. 'This is not just about building houses, it's about restoring faith and stability,' he said. Deputy chief minister and home minister Vijay Sharma called the initiative a 'historic step towards justice and dignity' for communities long affected by violence, adding that success stories show that 'development can reach even the most remote corners' when backed by empathy and effective administration.

OHRC asks govt to pay Rs 20k interim aid to families ‘evicted' for airstrip

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has asked the govt to pay an interim compensation of Rs 20,000 to each of the 26 families who were evicted by the Mayurbhanj administration on March 26 for the development of Dandbose airstrip under Rairangpur block. OHRC passed the order on July 29 after hearing a petition filed by affected residents of Pokharia village and activists, including Biswapriya Kanungo and Narendra Mohanty, on April 8. The affected persons present at the hearing submitted that they never gave consent to vacate their land. They were evicted forcibly with only one month's notice, during summer. Earlier, the Rairangpur tehsildar and other officials disconnected electricity supply to their houses without listening to their requests, they alleged. Despite the recommendations of the commission, temporary shelters were not provided to the affected, stated the OHRC order. "In the scorching heat, 43 families of tribals residing on the govt land under Rairangpur tehsil were evicted without following the procedure of law, resulting in a violation of human rights," the order added. The commission took cognisance of the matter and recommended that the Mayurbhanj collector provide immediate temporary shelter to the affected people. The investigating wing of the commission also visited the site. A report was also furnished by the district collector, tehsildar and BDO concerned. However, the Mayurbhanj administration, in its report, stated that there was no forcible eviction. "As they were residing by encroaching on the govt land identified for the development of Dandbose airstrip under the UDAN scheme in the public interest, they were evicted by following the due procedure of law," read the report.
