Dutch car sharing firm adds Renault EVs capable of powering local grid

to its fleet in the Netherlands this week, expanding the number of vehicles in Europe capable of strengthening the power grid as the technology gains traction.
Vehicle-to-grid technology
, known as V2G, allows electric vehicles to store power and provide it to the electricity grid at times of peak demand. The technology has been available for several years but only recently became commercially viable after the introduction of
smart charging technology
and batteries able to sustain intensive usage.
The rollout by MyWheels will be the largest
V2G car-sharing scheme
in Europe and the largest addition of V2G-enabled cars in the region.
It follows growing concern about grid stability after a major blackout in Spain and Portugal this year, and sabotage to power supply in southern France during this year's Cannes film festival, which have triggered more interest in a technology that can help balance fluctuating supply and demand, said Kees Koolen, an investor in We Drive Solar, the Dutch producer of the special chargers used in the project.
"It feels like we're at a tipping point," said Koolen, who estimated that the project in the Dutch city of Utrecht has cost around 100 million euros ($114 million) to develop.
The global V2G market was worth $3.4 billion in 2024, according to Global Market Insights, and is expected to grow by 38% annually between 2025 and 2034 to reach $80 billion.
The Netherlands is an early adopter of V2G technology due to ambitious plans to electrify its transport and heating systems while also moving to renewables. Japan's Nissan has also recently supplied dozens of V2G-enabled Leaf and Ariya models to France and Spain.
MyWheels says 500 of Renault's V2G-compatible cars, including its electric R5, will be on the road by next year. When not driving, the cars will be plugged into We Drive Solar's bidirectional chargers and the scheme's operators will be paid for electricity absorbed and sold to the grid.
Grids have become increasingly unstable with growing electrification and as more intermittent
renewable energy
is fed into the system.
"Our research shows that vehicle-to-grid technology could allow the growing
electric vehicle fleet
to become a significant asset to the grid, with vast storage potential locked up in electric vehicles," said Madeleine Brolly, advanced transport analyst at Bloomberg New Energy Finance. A key challenge ahead will be standardisation across manufacturers, which will be needed for it to be adopted at scale, she added.

Tata Steel bets big on India growth, says Chairman N Chandrasekaran

India remains the fastest-growing major economy, with growth supported by favourable demographics, ongoing structural reforms, low inflation, and targeted fiscal incentives, Chairman of Tata Steel N Chandrasekaran said in a letter to shareholders. 'A combination of rate cuts, higher capital expenditure, and tax benefits is expected to drive private investment and discretionary consumption,' he said, adding that India is poised to lead global steel consumption by 2026. Chandra said global steel output in FY2024-25 was stable at 1.83 billion tonnes, but despite this, margins remained under pressure due to supply chain volatility, although coking coal prices were lower. India's steel sector outperformed global peers, with crude steel output rising 4.7 per cent on a year-on-year basis and steel consumption surging 10.2 per cent year-on-year. The growth was driven by construction, urbanisation, and industrial activity, he said. In India, the company ran operations at near full capacity utilisation across sites, with highest-ever crude steel production of 21.7 million tonnes and deliveries of 20.9 million tonnes. The company commissioned India's largest blast furnace (5 MTPA) at Kalinganagar — part of the ₹27,000 crore Phase II expansion — while Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited (NINL) delivered strong performance with ₹1,000 crore EBITDA and generated positive free cash flow, Chandrasekaran said. In Europe, Tata Steel is advancing a major transition to low-emission steelmaking. In the UK, two blast furnaces at Port Talbot have been decommissioned to make way for a next-generation electric arc furnace (EAF) backed by £500 million in UK government funding. Construction begins in July this year, with fixed costs targeted to decline from £762 million to £540 million in FY2025-26. In the Netherlands, the company ran at near-rated capacity while progressing on a decarbonisation roadmap. Tata Steel Nederland is finalising a joint Letter of Intent with the Dutch government to support a shift to DRI-EAF-based steelmaking, with one blast furnace and one coke oven to be retired by 2030. A €500 million cost transformation plan is also underway. Tata Steel CEO & MD T.V. Narendran and ED & CFO Koushik Chatterjee reaffirmed focus on capex, efficiency, and sustainability as levers for future growth. On the deleveraging front, the company reduced net debt by ₹6,200 crore in H2 FY2024-25 to ₹82,579 crore. 'The company will stay the course in FY2025-26 by improving cash flows through cost take-out initiatives and operational efficiencies to bring down our debt level further,' the officials said.

Washington DC: Elon Musk's political adventure has been nothing short of a roller-coaster ride - Oval Office access and conference calls with world leaders at the President's golf resort at its peak and being threatened about his government contracts being scrapped and tax benefits being revoked at its worst. But it is Musk's businesses that have borne the brunt of his political escapade, especially in the last 24 hours, after his public fallout with former friend and boss Donald Trump. Tesla has become the worst-performing large-cap stock this year. Its valuation was on a steady decline ever since Musk made his political ambitions public. THE DECLINE Its decline picked pace amid Trump's rhetoric about "beautiful" oil and his executive order on Day 1 of his second term ordering to "drill baby, drill" to "Make America Great Again". As Trump kept hard-selling vehicles that run on petroleum, the demand for Electric Vehicles or EVs fell sharply. Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk's political controversies over his ties to far-right groups resulted in Tesla stock losing even more value after Trump took office in January. But the most devastating blow to the Tesla stock came after Thursday's explosive fallout when the two brash billionaires indulged in a no-holds-barred verbal duel resulting in an end to their partnership. FREE FALL Stock valuation went into free fall as markets opened after Trump's 'One Big Beautiful Bill' was passed by House Republicans leading to Musk and Trump trading threats and insults. Tesla stock plunged more than 14 per cent, resulting in a wipeout of roughly $152 billion in a matter of hours. With this, Tesla has lost more than $380 billion in valuation since the beginning of 2025 - making it the biggest loser among large-cap stocks. Tesla's market capitalization has fallen 29.3 per cent to $917 billion so far this year. The firm, which ranked eighth globally in terms of market cap at the start of the year, is now on the verge of dropping out of the top 10 big companies globally. THE EV-KILLER BILL Trump's 'Big Beautiful Bill' is seen by Elon Musk as an EV-killer since the bill removes tax cuts or tax benefits given to electric vehicle manufacturers. For a firm like Tesla, this means tens of billions of dollars annually. Donald Trump has now also threatened to cut Elon Musk's government subsidies and contracts, which give both Tesla and SpaceX "billions and billions of dollars" of benefits. Elon Musk's personal wealth has also taken a beating since the public feud, dropping by nearly $9 billion, according to Bloomberg's billionaire index. 'SUCH INGRATITUDE' During the spat, Elon Musk reminded the "ungrateful" President that the reason he can call the White House his home, was because of Musk's financial and moral support during the election campaign last year, for which he had poured in hundreds of millions of dollars. "Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the ingratitude," Musk wrote in a post on X. Musk has now suggested that Trump "should be impeached" and JD Vance should take over, claiming that the US President figures in the Epstein files over his links to child sex abuser and trafficker Jeffery Epstein.

No waiting for Tesla: India's homegrown electric vehicle path to a cleaner future

Air pollution is one of the most pressing problems facing India's urban population today. Among the many solutions proposed, the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) stands out as both viable and urgent. With negligible greenhouse gas emissions during operation, electric vehicles can significantly reduce air pollution in cities, where vehicular emissions remain a major contributor to deteriorating air quality. Critics argue that if the electricity used to charge EV batteries is generated from fossil fuels like coal or natural gas, then EVs will continue to contribute to carbon emissions—albeit indirectly. While this concern is not unfounded, lifecycle analyses of EVs have consistently shown that, even with current energy mixes, EVs emit far less greenhouse gases over their lifetime compared to internal combustion engine vehicles powered by petrol, diesel, or gas. Moreover, it is important to recognize that while the manufacturing process of electric vehicles, particularly battery production, does cause some environmental impact, the net emissions over the vehicle's entire lifespan remain significantly lower than conventional vehicles. This becomes especially relevant in densely populated urban centers like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata, where air pollution has reached hazardous levels. Why EVs Matter in Indian Cities In India's overcrowded cities, the potential for electric vehicles to improve air quality and reduce health risks is immense. By transitioning from fossil fuel-based transport to electric mobility, these cities can become more liveable and sustainable. However, for electric mobility to be truly effective, a broader ecosystem must also evolve. This includes: Generating electricity from renewable energy sources such as solar and windDeveloping a smart grid for efficient power distributionEstablishing environmentally sound battery manufacturing and recycling systems If implemented effectively, this holistic approach could not only reduce emissions but also ensure that EVs contribute positively to India's long-term environmental and energy goals. Simultaneously, India must pursue self-reliance in electric vehicle production. Relying solely on imports, particularly in a sector with high strategic value like automobile manufacturing, would be economically short-sighted and counterproductive to national interests. Strengthening the domestic EV industry will also stimulate job creation, economic growth , and technological advancement. A Booming Market with Huge Potential According to industry estimates, India's EV market could be worth $250 billion by 2030. The sector was valued at $1.45 billion in 2021 and grew to $3.21 billion in 2022. In a promising sign, India crossed the one million mark in EV sales last year, and this figure is expected to grow exponentially—reaching 17 million units annually by 2030, according to media reports and market projections. Many Indian manufacturers are already responding to this demand. Leading companies like Tata Motors , Mahindra & Mahindra , and others have started offering electric versions of their most popular models. These vehicles are not only gaining traction among Indian consumers but are also competitively priced and better suited to local market conditions compared to their global counterparts. Tesla's Entry: All Talk, No Action? One of the most debated issues in India's EV discourse has been whether American EV giant Tesla would manufacture in India. For years, Tesla lobbied the Indian government for a reduction in import duties, arguing that it wanted to test Indian market conditions by importing cars before committing to local production. However, this tentative approach raised concerns about the company's real intentions. It has now become apparent that Tesla is not interested in setting up manufacturing operations in India, at least for the foreseeable future. The Indian government, while announcing its new EV policy, implicitly acknowledged Tesla's lack of interest. Nevertheless, the policy itself reflects a forward-thinking approach: it seeks to incentivize domestic EV production while cautiously allowing limited imports. Under the revised EV policy: Manufacturers can import up to 8,000 electric cars per year at a reduced import duty of 15%.This concession is only applicable for EVs priced above $35, qualify, companies must invest a minimum of ₹4,150 crore (approx. $500 million) in setting up a local production plant within three total customs duty relief is capped at ₹6,484 crore, ensuring fiscal responsibility. Additionally, a government portal will soon open for manufacturers to apply under the scheme, remaining active for at least 120 days. To qualify, companies must have: A minimum of ₹10,000 crore in global revenue from vehicle manufacturing,At least ₹3,000 crore in fixed asset investment. Both Indian and foreign companies are eligible, provided they meet these requirements. This policy is designed not only to attract investment but also to strengthen India's status as a global manufacturing hub, in alignment with the 'Make in India' mission. Muted Interest from Global Players Despite these incentives, global automakers—most notably Tesla and Chinese manufacturer BYD—have shown little enthusiasm. While Tesla has begun appointing dealers in India for its imported models, it remains non-committal about domestic manufacturing. BYD, on the other hand, has refrained from major investment due to India's security concerns related to Chinese companies, especially those in electronics. Some experts suggest that other international automakers may still enter the Indian market. However, they face a steep uphill battle. Most of these companies have struggled to generate significant market share even in their home countries. Competing with dominant Indian players like Tata and Mahindra —who have a deep understanding of local demand and cost structures—will be even more challenging. Economic Growth, Job Creation, and Public Health Transitioning to electric mobility is not just an environmental necessity—it is also an economic opportunity. Various national studies have shown that clean energy and sustainability initiatives can generate both financial and social benefits, with EVs at the center of this transformation. India's EV industry could generate up to 50 million jobs by 2030, spanning vehicle manufacturing, battery production, charging infrastructure, logistics, and maintenance services. Moreover, the sector could add substantial value to India's GDP, strengthen supply chains, and foster R&D in green technologies. A major factor deterring foreign companies from investing in India is the cost efficiency of Indian manufacturers. Tata, Mahindra, and other domestic firms can produce EVs at prices ranging from ₹9 lakh to ₹20 lakh per unit, whereas companies like Tesla offer models priced ranging from ₹35 lakh to ₹80 lakh. With India's luxury car market still relatively small, high-end models do not offer the volume needed to justify large-scale production. The case for promoting the Make in India electric vehicle ecosystem is compelling. With the right mix of policy incentives, domestic innovation, and infrastructure development, India can position itself as a global leader in electric mobility. EVs can be a cornerstone in solving India's urban air pollution crisis, while also delivering economic benefits in the form of jobs, investment, and technological advancement. India does not need to wait for foreign giants to lead this transition. With capable and committed domestic players already driving the movement, the country can chart its own path—clean, competitive, and completely Made in India.
