Shinde chants 'Jai Gujarat', draws flak from Oppn
Shinde, while addressing a gathering during the inauguration of the Jairaj Sports and Convention Centre in Pune, built by the Gujarati community, ended his speech saying, 'Jai Hind, Jai Maharashtra, Jai Gujarat.'
His remarks came amid a row in Maharashtra over the imposition of Hindi in schools and violent incidents in Bhayandar and Pune, wherein shopkeepers and traders were attacked for refusing to speak in Marathi.
After videos of Shinde's speech surfaced on social media, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut referred to the Shinde-led Shiv Sena as (Amit) Shah Sena, and said, 'It is not surprising. Shinde's Sena was born in Gujarat with Shah's blessings.'
Raut was referring to events during the split in the Shiv Sena in 2022, when Shinde and MLAs from his faction were holed up in Surat.
The Shiv Sena (UBT) MP also posted two separate videos of Shinde's speech in Pune on social media, saying, 'Shah Sena! Amit Shah's duplicate's Shiv Sena's true face was exposed today. In Pune this man (Eknath Shinde) gave the slogan 'Jai Gujarat'! What to do? How can this man remain in the Maharashtra cabinet.'
NCP (SP) national spokesperson Clyde Crasto said though the Shiv Sena claimed to represent the Marathi manoos, they were lusting for power and trying to please Amit Shah.
'When Eknath Shinde was made chief minister, many projects meant for Maharashtra went to Gujarat. Now, it is proved that Shinde was working for the benefit of Gujarat,' Crasto said.
State Congress chief spokesperson Atul Londhe said Shinde was only saluting his master Amit Shah as he wants to become chief minister again.
Shinde, who reached Mumbai in the evening, clarified his stand in a hurriedly convened press conference. The function had been organised by the Gujarati community and he was only appreciating them for building a sports complex which could be used by all, the deputy chief minister said.
'The Gujarati community has been living here for decades and contributed to the progress of Maharashtra,' Shinde said. He also showed a video of Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray purportedly speaking at a function in Gujarat, where he too said 'Jai Gujarat'.
Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis supported Shinde, saying leaders make remarks at functions they attend according to the sentiments of people in front of them. Hailing Gujarat was not the same as hating Maharashtra, he clarified.
'If Shinde has said so, it does not mean that he has no love for Marathi. Leaders speak according to the sentiments of people sitting in front of them. It is a narrow minded thought to criticise him for it,' Fadnavis said.
Even Sharad Pawar had said 'Jai Karnataka' while inaugurating the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Chikodi in Karnataka in the past, he noted, adding, 'That does not mean that he loves Karnataka more than Maharashtra.'
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut responded to Fadnavis' remarks, saying Thackeray and Pawar had hailed Gujarat and Karnataka respectively when they were speaking in those states. 'In the case of Shinde, he spoke in Pune which is in Maharashtra. What was the need to utter the slogan except to appease someone,' he said.
Meanwhile, NCP – the third major partner in the ruling alliance – said the controversy should have been avoided.
'Eknath Shinde is a responsible politician. It would have been better if he had avoided this,' said NCP spokesperson Sanjay Tatkare.

In a chilling murder late Friday night, prominent Bihar businessman Gopal Khemka was shot dead in his car as he was waiting to enter his Patna residence. Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav and Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly also attacked the state government over its inability to curb crime. "Hundreds of businessmen are being murdered in Bihar every month, but we can't call it jungle raj? Because this is what the scriptures call media management, perception management, and image management," he wrote on social-media platform X in Hindi. Earlier in the day, RJD leader Mrityunjay Tiwari also slammed the state government over the murder, alleging that the state has "descended into lawlessness" under Nitish Kumar's leadership. "Nitish Kumar is no longer fit to remain on the chief minister's chair even for a moment. Bihar has descended into a state of lawlessness... Only the departure of this government will bring good to Bihar," he told news agency ANI.

Punjab govt to introduce anti-sacrilege law in special Assembly session
The Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government has announced plans to table a new law against sacrilege during a special session of the state legislative assembly scheduled for July 10 and 11, news agency ANI reported. The decision is being described by the state as 'historic for Punjab' and is aimed at addressing the longstanding demand for stricter laws against sacrilegious acts. Officials confirmed that the proposed legislation will ensure strict punishment for individuals found guilty of hurting religious sentiments, ANI reported. Mann launches 'fast track Punjab portal' Speaking at an event in Mohali, Kejriwal called the initiative 'unprecedented' and said it sets Punjab apart from other states in terms of governance and economic policy. 'When Bhagwant Mann and I visited Punjab, we met traders and received their proposals. After listening and understanding their concerns, we made this decision,' Kejriwal said. 'We want traders who left Punjab to return and work here. Our intent is clear, and that's why we are making this announcement. Our government's policy is entirely different from the current politics of the country.' He emphasised the need for a business-friendly environment where industrialists can concentrate on growth rather than bureaucratic hurdles. 'No government in any state has made such announcements until today,' Kejriwal added. According to Kejriwal, businesses can now apply for approvals through the Invest Punjab Portal, with guaranteed processing timelines: 45 days for most projects and just three days for those up to ₹125 crore. Punjab reports 44% growth in June GST collections Punjab witnessed a significant rise in its net Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections in June 2025, registering a 44.44 per cent year-on-year increase, news agency PTI reported. Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said that the state collected ₹2,379.90 crore in June, up from ₹1,647.69 crore in the same month last year. 'Punjab has surpassed the national average in GST growth and emerged as one of the top-performing states, despite ongoing national and geopolitical challenges, including border-related tensions,' Cheema said. He added that the state also recorded a 15.35 per cent increase in April and a 24.59 per cent rise in May. For the first quarter of FY26, Punjab's net GST revenue reached ₹6,830.40 crore, up from ₹5,377.75 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Punjab approves ₹68 crore loan waiver for Dalit families Last month, the Punjab Cabinet approved a ₹68 crore loan waiver for over 4,000 Dalit families. The beneficiaries had taken loans from the Punjab Scheduled Castes Land Development and Finance Corporation. The approval was granted during a cabinet meeting chaired by Mann in Chandigarh. The waiver will cover loans taken up to March 31, 2020. Addressing the media after the meeting, Mann said the move would benefit 4,727 families who had borrowed for various livelihood activities, including shop setups and dairy farming. 'This promise was made by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema during his budget speech in March. With this cabinet nod, we have delivered on that commitment,' Mann said. (With agency inputs)

'The decision had been taken without consulting education experts. Just because you have power you wanted to force this,' added the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader. He also spoke about migration from other states. 'Hindi-speaking states are economically backward. People are migrating from these states to non-Hindi-speaking states. Why has Hindi not helped them progress?' he added. On the third-language row, he claimed, 'They just tested waters. Had this decision on Hindi been accepted quietly, the next step would have been an attempt to separate Mumbai from Maharashtra.' Leaders of the two parties appeared overjoyed on the sidelines. 'After many years, this golden time has arrived, where today both Thackerays, who are well-established brands, are coming together, not because of politics, but for the sake of Maharashtra's honour,' said Anand Dubey, a leader of Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), told ANI.
